Miyamoto Says More HD Remakes Are A Possibility

mario_kart_7_artwork2

Prolific video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has explained that future HD remakes of older critically acclaimed Nintendo titles are a possibility. Miyamoto says that HD remakes could well be a good project for a development partner of Nintendo’s due to the success of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, which was released in September for Wii U. We heard a juicy rumour yesterday that Nintendo is planning a “ReUmagined” series in which the company gives seven Nintendo 64 games a complete make over.

“As for remaking previous games in HD, that’s certainly possible, but currently most of our devs are working on new stuff, and we like to have them working on new stuff. HD remakes might, however, be a good project for a development partner of ours, so that’s something I hope we have the opportunity to introduce in the future.”

“But the main thing that’s always going to be on our minds are, “What new elements of gameplay can we use with the GamePad as applied to some of these older games?” We want to find some way to bring a new experience to this than simply update the visuals and leave it at that.”

  1. To be honest, I’d like it if people stopped obsessing so much over the idea of remakes. It just doesn’t seem good for the industry, and it probably cripples innovation in the studios. Gaming is only 30 years young; why are we so obsessed with going back to the old days so soon?

Granted, I enjoy remakes as much as the next person – but where do we draw the line? When do we decide that we’ve had enough of this one game and want to see something new – even if it’s something that captures what made the old thing good and really improves upon it, or refines it?

    Food for thought.

    1. everyone is entitled to thier own opinion but you are very right, but some people crave that nostalgic feel of how they felt playing that game so many years before, but in a way I do agree with you

    2. i would prefer them to just port old games from a variety of prior systems to the e-shop with lower prices and producing new games for the Wii U system. I’m especially interested in RPGs from the Snes Era. Never played any N64 games.

I agree 100%. Producing HD remakes so early on is a mistake. Soon they’ll run out lol. I know that wasn’t the point but it would happen.

I would much rather them just port everything to the eShop. Then every once in a blue moon they deliver an HD remake to a classic game.

  2. Fuck Super Mario 64, that piece of shit already has a remake and it’s ridiculously overrated. GIVE US PAPER MARIO IN HD.

    1. Hell yea people flip out too much for mario 64. Its been remade alright. Im down for a console paper mario that plays like the first two

  3. no more remakes dammit! new games and new ips are what nintendo needs. you clowns will drag nintendo down with your fucking remake requests. new games> remakes.

    1. Did you even read the fucking comment that miyamoto made???

He said ”Nintendo is FOCUSED ON NEW TITLES BUT WOULD LOVE TO GIVE A NINTENDO PARTNER THE PROJECT”.

Did I make that fucking big enough for you to read? Learn to open your eyes and read before you post stupid fucking comments like this.

      1. shut your fucking clown ass up. my point still stands. no remakes, period! hardly anybody likes the wiiu right now. remakes are going to make things worse. they need to focus on new games and new ips only and never make a remake again. my god you’re one stupid fuck.

    1. Maybe because at the time, they hadn’t expected Wii U to not sell as well as it could have done. Although I do agree that they could have sorted something out sooner. At least they’ve admitted the mistake and are wanting to do something about it.

        1. For Sunshine yes. Bowser shouldn’t talk, and the character’s voices should be more professional. It was silly really.

  4. Buy Rare IP’s back from Microsoft, minus Killer Instinct, release Golden Eye HD and PD HD with online Multi .. rake in $$$.

I want to see Banjo Kazooie HD and new Banjo games as well. Both that and Conkers would be epic with the gamepad. Microsoft isnt using the IP’s, so might as well unload them. They dont fit with their brand either. Shame N messed up and didn’t just drop the fraction of the $375 million MS paid for Rare (I believe N already owned 49% of the company, so roughly $190m would have made Rare theirs. The GOOD Rare, not the shitty shell that it is now. They even approached N first, giving them preference to purchase over MS. One of big N’s bigger blunders. I still hold out a sliver of hope that one day they will buy back the ips, but its def a long shot.

    1. N probably couldve gotten it cheaper too since MS wouldn’t buy Rare with N owning 49%, hence N selling their shares back to Rare before the entirety was sold to MS. I’m sure there would’ve been a built in discount.

      1. If Nintendo bought Rare, all of this would be possible:

Release of GoldenEye 007 HD (assuming all legal issues were resolved)
Re-release of Perfect Dark HD on Virtual Console
Re-release of Perfect Dark Zero on Virtual Console
Development of new Perfect Dark game
Re-release of Killer Instinct 1 and 2 (arcade versions) on Virtual Console
Re-release of Killer Instinct SNES and Killer Instinct Gold (for those who prefer the console versions)
        Development of Killer Instinct 3
Re-release of Banjo-Kazooie on Virtual Console
Re-release of Banjo-Tooie on Virtual Console
Re-release of Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts (a lot of gamers enjoyed it)
        Development of Banjo-Threeie
Re-release of Jet Force Gemini on Virtual Console
Development of a new Jet Force Gemini game
Re-release of Blast Corps. on Virtual Console
Development of a new Blast Corps. game
Re-release of Conker’s Bad Fur Day on Virtual Console
Development of a new Conker game
Re-release of RC Pro-Am games on Virtual Console
Development of new RC Pro-Am games (they made one but it was renamed Diddy Kong Racing)
Re-release of Battletoads games on Virtual Console
        Development of new Battletoads games
Re-release of many other Rare games
Development of sequels to other Rare games
        Development of new IPs
Rare games on the Nintendo 3DS

  5. They wont remake mario 64 or other 64 games on wii u. If anything maybe on 3ds and gcn games on wii u. Also mario 64 is too dated for a remake on console. It was good for its time but the other 3d mario games are so much better in gameplay

  6. The only remakes I really want are Majora’s Mask for 3DS (because I couldn’t play it back then) and Ruby & Sapphire remakes.

    That’s all.

  7. Sonic Adventure 2 would be a cool remake, better lip syncing, characters not talking over each other, better treasure hunting stage, there could be potential.

    1. While I don’t think SA2 remakes can be ruled out, I find them fairly unlikely. SEGA doesn’t really seem interested in remaking Sonic games, only porting them. We already have SA2 on Xbox Live/PSN, so that seems like the closest we’re getting to a remake for the time being. And even if they did want to, it’d take a bit of work to get it to the point where it’s actually any good. 2/3 of the gameplay styles don’t really feel Sonicy because they’re too slow, which means the characters would need to be sped up, and the gameplay, controls, and level design would need to change to reflect this. SEGA may think this is more trouble than it’s worth.

  8. Nintendo 64 remakes are great and all, but I would think they’d be better for 3DS like OoT3D.

Still, I’d like to see Kirby 64 come back, and maybe Super Mario Sunshine. Heck, I wouldn’t mind the original Smash Bros. being brought back either. Oh, and Majora’s Mask too.

    1. Surely you jest. If you are joking, then funny. If you’re serious, then why would you want the two most recent Zelda games to be remade, especially SS. It hasn’t even been 2 full years yet.

  9. ““What new elements of gameplay can we use with the GamePad as applied to some of these older games?””

To me, this is a confirmation of a Super Mario 64 HD. The Wii U and the gamepad are the tools that would let Miyamoto fullfil his dream of having to player co op doing that game.

  10. If Majora’s Mask get a Wii U remake, lets see how ”i’ll buy a Wii U if MM comes out” people actually buys it. I’ll buy Mario 64 HD only if Luigi is playable without two people.

  11. I’m glad Nintendo is actually working on new stuff instead of remakes, it’s the new stuff that’s going to sell the console.

If they were to remake something, though, they should remake Super Mario Sunshine or Kirby 64.

  12. No, just no! What Nintendo needs to most are two things other than simple remakes.

    1. Making at a least a few new IPs for this gen other than Nintendo Land and The Wondeful 101.

    2. Look back at their older IP’s that need some form of revival for this gen. (F-Zero, Star fox, Nazo no Murasame-Jo, ect.)

  13. I don’t like the idea a lot. It’s like disney remaking movies in 3D, which shows that they’re running into a wall
