US video game publication Games Radar thinks Nintendo should admit defeat and ditch the company’s Wii U console. The publication says that it’s now time for Nintendo to cut its losses and start again with a more powerful console, presumably to compete against the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. They believe that Nintendo could have a new machine ready by 2015. Of course, if this ever did happen, there would certainly be a lot of angry and disheartened Nintendo fans.
“But Wii U is not next-gen. It’s still stuck in 2005. Sure, it’s a got a superb, high-res touchscreen, which is technically superior to Sony’s PS Vita Remote play (at least at present) and this comes in the box with the console, but essentially Wii U is technically on a par with last-gen machines, aping the Wii’s winning tactic from the previous era. But where Vita was never intended to be an intrinsic part of PS4 and has just turned out to work extremely well with it, the GamePad was meant to be a big part of the Wii U experience. And it hasn’t proved its worth in that respect.”
“But is it worth that struggle? Maybe it would be better for the company to cut its losses and start again with a new console. If developed now, a new Nintendo machine would likely be ready in time for Christmas 2015. By then, it would be too soon for Sony and Microsoft to counter it with another launch, giving Nintendo the chance to offer a more powerful console at around the price of PS4 and XO right now.”

It would be abandoning the 5 million people who already bought a U, confusing the market even more & setting up a true Gsmecube situation. Nintendo had a more powerful console than Sony & gamers left it and all of the now classics behind in the dust. They called it a purple lunchbox, said it had a crap controller & hated on Wind Waker & Sunshine. Now everyone loves the controller, Sunshine & WW. The Wii U may have the same fate, but people will remember the quality games rather than the specs.

Nintendo’s problems are 100% in how they market their console. It ranges from confusing to pathetic to almost non-existent. Case in point: The marketing for the original Wii was awesome, and that system was a runaway success.

I’d like to agree with you, because in a perfect world, that’s how it would work. However, in the world we live in, money is the bottom line. The problem is, Nintendo isn’t making much of it [money], in fact, they’re losing it on each console sold. People are spending money on these uber-powerful consoles with the most features and prettiest graphics, even if the games are craptacular. But you’re right, if the games are good, then it shouldn’t matter about power or graphics, but that’s not the case. :( So with that said, its a vicious cycle. No one is buying it because there are hardly any games for it because nobody’s making games for it because nobody’s buying it. So on and so forth. Games cost so much these days it seems, that even breaking even profit-wise could be detrimental for a company (eg: THQ), so they’re not even going to risk making a game for a system that only 4 million people own, and MIGHT buy that game. Which all goes back to that vicious cycle.
I think that the starting over from scratch thing could be a halfway decent idea, if executed in the proper way. For example; say Nintendo releases the “Nintendo NVii (envy)” with Wii U backwards compatibility in 2015, they could offer it at a great discount for those who already own a Wii U. That way the consumers who already bought Nintendo’s next gen system won’t feel like they got burned. *As the Sega fanbase did all those years ago* But that wont happen. Nintendo just needs to raise awareness for the Wii U and get people on the bandwagon for it, because it’s actually a pretty sweet console. It just needs more content. * cough Gamecube VC games cough*

thats exactly it. which is why in the very least they need to ditch the gamepad. go for a good old fashion controller. the gamepad is a gimick and unlike the wiimote that had tons of ways to truly differenciate its gameplay. gamepad, all its good for is convenient stuff, similarly with the vita memory cards, its not worth the price tag. aswell as holding back sells of the system. certainly is me, until zelda U i won’t be buying it because other then zelda the wii U isn’t worth the price.

These big companies don’t get that. Do you know how much confusion that would add to the situation? I just bought my son this Wii U after finally knowing what it is and now they are discontinueing it? Do they really want Nintendo to just stop or crash? It takes time to develop games and Nintendo can’t just jump from SD/ED to Super HD like the PS4 and Xbone. They had troubles with the Wii U development since they had no idea what they were doing.

Wii U is very very powerful. Don’t read into the clock speeds too much, you’ve got to take everything about the console into consideration. It’s architecture and what the hardware can do are far more important. Graphics are nowhere near as important as gameplay.

Aonuma has been hyping the new Zelda game, and I highly doubt they had time to make a separate remake aside from The Wind Waker.
Ok if this is true then all the signs either point to a remake or a zelda that has majora returning. Looking at the timeline its possible to have him return, since the hero fails time line and the adult link time has majora. If its majora mask HD it better be for wii u want to see that game shine.

Mario 3d looks great, plays great… and I am happy to let the “power” of the system fall to me as Nintendo sees fit… because pushing the boundaries of processors et al does not always make the best games in the now… even other products like cell phones and computers are the same way…
Nintendo is more a kin to Apple, and as the IPhone may not be as “powerful” as the Galaxy S4, many can argue that it is a better overall experience… and now it would certainly be better if the wii u is more popular, mainly so they still keep making nintendo games for us and trying new things… I don’t care if it is the #3 system
Lastly, I wonder why games have not utilized the controller more, not just for the second screen, but for the motion abilities… I thought that in Nintendo Land, when you play metroid and have to fly the ship, that the ergonomics (?) or whatever you want to call it when controlling the ship were quite awesome and would like to have more games like that (star fox… ahem)

I thought the controls in Metroid Nintendo Land were good, but the fact that I had to stand up and circle around in 360 to aim at enemies was not really fun, more just tedious, and I would HATE to play ANY serious game where I had to stand up the whole time and move in 360 degrees. I love the motion for things like aiming the bow and arrow in Wind Waker HD though, but that doesn’t require me to stand up and spin in circles.

I don’t get why they don’t get it. Next Gen, by definition, means different than the previous Gen. It doesn’t have to be vastly superior to the previous Gen to take your money – hence PS4 and XboxOne.

They’re not necessarily saying that graphics are the most important thing – they’re noting how Nintendo has made a huge focus on the gamepad and has yet to deliver on it. Let’s be honest here, people: the WiiU is a non-portable DS. The gamepad is another gimmick that developers and Nintendo themselves will soon not put much effort into and instead try to just put out good games that don’t need to rely on another screen.

OR – Nintendo could go the Sega Genesis route, offer various upgrade addons, 4gb extra ram faster cpu, 8gb ram even faster cpu, 32gb ram increase top tier cpu, gpu, 5tb hdd/ incorporate those into the wii u itself Super Wii U, backwards compatibility ranging from Gamecube to wii, even create officially branded external nes, snes, n64 cart readers to play actual carts on the wii u, maybe even a 3D gamepad with a bigger screen, 4g built in to play your wii u away from home/ possibly even make it a whole new mobile platform in and of itself when not being used on the wii u, A Nintendo app store similar to the Android google play store. Redesign a new wii u exclusive Wiimote Umote?
with enough determination, money, and competent workers, Nintndo could obliterate the pc market, skip 2 gaming generations, and be top dog in the gaming industry.
i think what you said about upgrade add on makes sense. nintendo spent too much resources on making the wii u and selling upgrade add ons will surely avoid massive loss on the company. i am not really sure if it’s possible but i think it would be a great idea
It shows GamesRadar doesn’t understand business. So you want Nintendo to scrap Wii U piss of their core loyal customers, then you want Nintendo to research and develop even more powerful console which would obviously sell at a bigger loss, halt all development on current games and extend projects to the next console which is money wasted and adds labor costs. Then once it launches, it would have to compete against XBOX ONE and PS4 which both now have established library of games and most third party developpers already abondoning Nintendo because of the abrupt change in plan which also costed them top dollars.
So thank you Gamesradar for your thoughtful input. If Nintendo wants go bankrupt, they will call you in.

I’m just going to say that Nintendo will make another console and in 3 years we will talking about how excited were for E3 to see the new platform but we won’t see 1 in 2015 because they would lose trust from it’s fans and consumers but like I said 2016 a new console is announced and released in 2017 and with that 1 I want Nintendo to do whatever they want with power even if it’s just a grafical update to the levels of the PS4/X1 but at the same time I want Nintendo to release a console 3times the power of PS4/X1 just to see if analyst just shut up and if 3rd partys say that they won’t make the games better on the console because of it’s power

They would get even less support from developers because even less people will buy the system.
They would lose 100% of the budget they invested to develop the Wii U.
It’s simply not a good idea. Do they know what happened in the past when companies did things like that? Sega, Atari, does it ring in your memories? Besides that, they should just take some time and investigate each machines hardware, I won’t go into more detail (for now) but If they’d have done that they wouldn’t say that it’s so far behind the Playstation 4 or the Xbox One (especially the Xbox one). They also wouldn’t say that it’s on par with the Xbox 360 or the PS3.

but they are right. i own a 3ds and a wii u and the 3ds is better. the 3d effect rocks, the games are cool. wii u has nothing special. its just a tablet, nothing more. havent played a game where you really need it. the wii controllers were better. to me the lamest console. and after year not having a real new zelda oder metroid ist just stupid. the other game promised early 2013 were delayed to somewhere 2014….

Wii U games look great. All the ones I’ve played have not made me think “Oh, I wish I could see every stitch in Mario’s pants” or “Wow, I wish I could make out my character’s bulge in Monster Hunter”. Graphics don’t make a good game, and I feel like that’s the biggest issue people face with Wii U, they’re graphics whores and want a PS4 or One for what? Graphics? Yeah, it was pretty much sold out in most Metropolitan areas in the US during Black Friday so its selling a bunch now. And is still selling out in many stores. And considering they had a surplus from summer, expect a turn around to start showing up. Even if you look at the last quarter which sold only 360,000 worldwide, which isn’t allot about half of those came in the last week of September. So yes its selling now (except in the UK).

I actually love my Wii U(s). I wish more people would wake up and realise just how much you get when you buy one. Sure it’s not the most powerful out of the next generation consoles, but its stellar game line-up – both released and future titles – and price point make purchasing one a serious no-brainer. Has anyone bothered to take and step back and compare games between the new consoles? Why would anyone, besides video game-illiterate turds who want to do nothing but shoot virtual people online, want a Playstation 4 or Xbox One right now?
Even when good games are released for the other consoles, the Wii U is something everyone should have to complement the other game libraries. The “console war” shouldn’t be Wii U vs PS4 vs Xbox, I think it should be more like PS4+Wii U vs Xbox+Wii U.
In regards to the graphics/power debate, for shit’s sake, if that’s all an individual cares about then they should be buying a high end PC with a high end graphics card.
When you buy a Wii U, you’re pretty much buying a promise that you will be able to play extremely high quality, innovative, and downright fun games of all genres. You’re also buying a machine with a significantly lower chance of breaking within a year or two when compared to the others. Make no mistake, I will be buying both a Playstation 4 and Xbox One sometime down the road, but there’s just so much that Nintendo can offer me that the other companies cannot.
Oh, one more thing. RPG fans have a gargantuan reason to dive into Wii U: Monolith Soft.

Last week the Wii U sold 275,000. The XBOX One sold 400,000. The PS4 sold 975,000. The Playstation 4 has sold 2.1 million worldwide which is ahead of where the Wii U was last year in sales and half as much as the Wii u lifetime sales at 4.4 million.
So no, the Wii U is not selling better than the XBOX One or PS4. It’s not even selling better than the PS3 and 360. Both those consoles sold 490,000 a piece.
I wish Nintendo did it. To focus a lot on 3ds, ditch WiiU. And maybe release those planned games like X, and new Zelda. And then just to make a new next gen console, with all unified accounts and everything else, with backward compatibility so we dont miss those games. Those 4 millions Nintendo fans would still buy a new home console from Nintendo.

You cannot possibly do that. The hardware of Wii U is Wii just greatly enhanced. You cannot put new hardware that wasn’t in Wii because things like Wii games and the peripherals won’t work due to the CPU and components needed. You clearly don’t get it.

Again, you cannot because it needs the right components for Wii games to work as well as Wii U. You cannot just change the hardware.
If Wii Remotes and the Gamepad use the same sort of connectivity in which it probably does, then you must stick with the same hardware but you have to increase it and add more to it. That’s the way hardware works, otherwise Nintendo would have stripped out backwards compatibility and gone with Wii U only – that’s exactly what MS and Sony did, and to be honest it was a very stupid move.

This same thing happened to the 3DS when it came out. Nintendo made the mistake of charging too much and everyone said this same type of crap about Nintendo being “dead.”
The only ones I see bashing on the Wii U are Pachter and Gaming Sources that have always hated Nintendo.
Nintendo needs to do the same strategy that they used for the 3DS: drop the price to undercut Sony and Microsoft because it is already $100 less than PS4 and $200 less than Xbone. Put out more advertising to help explain the difference between it and the Wii. And finally give both the 3rd Party games that other consoles get releases for exclusives for Wii U and put out first Party titles that everyone really wants.

Look at the Wii – that didn’t look any where near as powerful as 360 or PS3, but that OUTSOLD both of them put together.

I own a 360, but I have had more fun on my Wii U, because there are games on it which are far better designed and their games are very well programmed – hardly any bugs. Graphically might not have blown 360 games out of the water on some occasions, but has that let me down – simply no.
I’d rather play Mario Galaxy than half the stuff my 360 has got, because the game play is a richer and better experience and it engages the player far more with the Wii Remote.
Can we all just stop making fun of Nintendo – next year they’re are going to smack PS4 and X1 right in faces with their new stuff that comes out next year. Games like Bayonetta and MK8 are out next year and that will then start marking when Wii U really comes to life.
It’s all about making experiences that couldn’t be done before.

How interesting. When EA comes out and tells you that Battlefield 4 will not be coming to the Wii U because the Wii U “allegedly” cannot handle the Frostbite 3 engine people jump for joy! When it is proven that is a lie because Battlefield 4 is ported over to far less powerful hardware, you hear the crickets again. Same way that when Shin’en Games came out to say that Fast Racing NEO will be using 4K and 8K texture resolutions on their new game and that they developed a brand new engine for the Wii U more powerful than there first…crickets.

You’re not including the direct access to the 32mb of very very very fast eDRAM built directly into the GPGPU. The RAM is only needed to load extra things, and besides, the CPU has 3mB of very very quick eDRAM built into each CPU core – which again is very fast and code efficient.
Next gen consoles have GPGPU set up and it’s 3rd parties problem if they don’t bother trying. Got nothing to do with a console not having enough RAM.

I ve been a nintendo supporter and owner since I was young but this past launch of the Wii U I listened to Reggie as he said that there would be no excuse for AAA games multi plan to come to the Wii U after the launch of the ps4 Xbox 1 I am now unfortunately a first-time owner of a Sony product now there are some things that the Wii U has obviously that sony doesn’t which one feature I love is the of tv play of the gamepad but I really love that I can play on the gamepad in my son can have the TV and its two separate games basically and not actually a split screen that’s irritating as hell but now unfortunately I do have a ps4 & my wii you probably will collect dust because from where it stands now I highly doubt it’s going to get the multi plAts that Reggie promised.. so eventually um I probably will take the Wii U to gamestop cuz there’s no reason for me to actually invest more money into the Wii U any of the games that are staples for Nintendo, are kinda getting old and monotonous now so in reality I do think and feel that I made a bad choice had I known I probably wouldn’t have bought it even though nintendo has had a long history of very solid machines I’ve never ever ever had a problem with any of the machines from way back from any of times and this is one of the reasons why I continue to purchase nintendo but over the years I’ve noticed a specially with the Wii um we got passed over and many many more type lats or we just got shitty versions of those games and no DLC you know now I’m tired and even if they came out with another next gen machine that was on par or close to I probably wouldn’t buy Nintendo anymore also not the fault actually nintendo but the install base for most mature titleS that I like is not very strong and this is another reason for my switch to the ps4

The writer for the GamesRadar article may be somewhat right. Nintendo can’t seem to do anything with the gamepad that warrants it’s substitution for the more typical next generation shtick. I’m a bit sad about it. ‘Unique Innovation’ isn’t worth a damned thing if you can’t make it has such low potential. Whatever happens to the Wii U, I know I’m going to faithfully support it straight to the end. I’ve been satisfied with with the content it has so far, and there’s more well on the way, but unfortunately most of that software is good in a way that’s virtually irrespective of the console’s gimmick.
Regardless, I believe Iwata’s too stuck-up on his typical my-going-against-the-curb-is-what-makes-Nintendo-special pride to outright cancel a console.

uuuuh…I sort of did…I bought 2 one for me and one for my nephew when he comes over plus my other one is a Zelda wind waker special edition…and plan to but him his own for this Christmas for his own home…so he can stop bugging me to play with him all the time. Good thing I got his own Super Mario 3D World for his Christmas and plan to get one of my own.

That would be unbelievably stupid. Creating a new console requires lots of time and money, rushing a new console to keep up would likely affect the next console’s quality. Not to mention that they’d piss off a lot of Wii U owners by discontinuing it after a year or two and many gamers would lose trust in them. The best they can do is try to ride out 8th gen while they take their time planning 9th, and then bring in 9th gen when they’re good and ready. This will probably take until at least 2016-2017.
next gen means sequential like xb1, then xb360 or gb, then gbc. next gen does not mean power, if some company makes an lcd game system then a couple yrs later makes a something similar to the gameboy (lets say this year to 2015) then the gameboy like system is next gen
Nintendo should just have packaged a improved GameCube controller in with the Wii and now with the Wii U as well as the Wiimote and Nunchuck straight out of the box with all three controllers.
Nintendo needs to package the Wii U with the Wii U Pro Controller. That way, it’ll be more of an approach that will draw people in that don’t like the gamepad(which is, unfortunately, most people). Honestly, I love the gamepad, but it’s not working as well as Nintendo thought. They should make it an extra, and then have Pro Controller be the console’s main thing, which can appeal to all gamers. If someone wants a gamepad, then they could go buy one as an accessory. That’s what Nintendo should do. The Pro controller can play any Wii U game(except for maybe… Nintendo Land? But they could always send an update to fix that) so it can work with all of the already existing games. Every Nintendo console to date has had at least affordable controllers. The gamepad is the main thing for Wii U, and they’re ridiculously expensive, and they don’t even sell them individually. If they had a classic approach with the Pro Controller, then maybe people would look at the Wii U for what it is as a console(like the previous Nintendo consoles) instead of a Wii with a new controller(which is, sadly, what a lot of people think it is). Nintendo is pushing all of the Wii U attention towards the gamepad, and that’s not all people want, they want a solid console with solid games not just a bunch of controller crap.
Although that’s just one possibility. I’ll trust Nintendo to succeed whatever they do and I’ll always play their games, but I think a lot of positive things would come from a normal controller.

some developers should stop being lazy and bring crappy ports to the wii u if they tried the wii u will probably sell better but no some 3rd party developers like activison decides lets bring this game on the wii u but lets not put no dlc EA gaved up so so far all we have is Sega, Nintendo themselves and indie developers.
