Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze File Size Revealed

Stephen Totilo from Kotaku has revealed that the file size for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze via download is over 11GB. This makes Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze  possibly the biggest Wii U title yet, so if you haven’t already purchased an external HDD for your Wii U then you should consider investing in one.

Donkey Kong Country Freeze is over 11GB. Biggest Nintendo game ever? It takes up half my Wii U!

          1. External HDD are way cheaper than internal memory. You can buy a 64gig one for nearly nothing or go all the way for a 1Tb one for like 100$ or less

        1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Except for, at launch, people payed $50 less than for a PS4 and got noticably weaker hardware and 6.4% the space.

          1. Expect for, even if you buy your games on disc, you still need a good amount of GB on your HDD (Battlefield 4 needs about 20 GB I think).

          2. How “noticeably weaker” is the Wii U compared to PS4? You don’t know because you’re just an idiot talking out of your ass. Fact is NO ONE has seen a game that takes full advantage of the Wii U hardware while the PS4 is almost maxed out already due to it’s PC-like architecture. Noe one really knows how powerful the Wii U is and that’s a fact. And Wii U is $100 cheaper, not $50.

            1. While I’m sure we’ve not yet seen the best of the Wii U, I hardly think the PS4 is maxed out already. Both systems will have some pretty impressive games over the years they’ll be out, I’m certain.

              1. Actually what he said is true. The devs for Witcher 3 said they already have both systems at their max since it’s such a demanding game.

              1. Way to throw out insults. So mature.
              2. I do have an idea considering I have both a Wii U and a PS4 and there is a “NOTICEABLE” difference. I didn’t say it was a huge gap. I said it was noticeable. Learn what words actually mean.
              3. So you’re saying, because the PS4 is already “maxed out” (no proof to that), and the Wii U isn’t fully utilized, the Wii U could surpass the PS4’s graphics? That’s not true at all. All this means is that the Wii U isn’t currently as powerful as the PS4 and, when fully optimized, STILL won’t be.
              4. See, you didn’t even read my entire comment because I said “AT LAUNCH” it was $50 cheaper.
              5. Of course no one has seen a Wii U game at the max. I’m not saying it won’t look good. I just said that there is a difference in hardware. You right away assumed I was hating on Wii U and jumped to all sorts of conclusions, getting your panties in a bunch.

          3. The hardware is not noticeably weaker. This isn’t wii vs ps3 all over again. Wii u games look better than the current ps4 games already

            1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Just because it isn’t Wii vs. PS3 doesn’t mean it isn’t noticeable.
              noticeable |ˈnōtisəbəl|
              adjective
easily seen or noticed; clear or apparent: a noticeable increase in staff motivation.
              • noteworthy: a noticeable new phenomenon.

The difference between PS4 games and Wii U games is noticeable. I have both consoles, so I would know. I’m not saying Wii U games don’t look good. I’m not saying the gap in power matters. I’m saying that there IS a gap.

Wii U games do NOT look better than PS4 games. This just shows you don’t own a PS4 and are just pulling stuff out of thin air.

              1. Okay. So you first said “I’m not saying Wii U games doesn’t look good”

But still said “Wii U games doenot look better than PS4 games”

You just hit the big contradicting note right there.

                Fucking graphic ass kissing hypocrites…

                1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

                  1. Learn how to quote.
                  2. Learn how to spell.
                  3. Learn how to comment without insulting another commenter.
                  4. Learn how to use singular and plural words.
                  5. I indeed said Wii U games don’t look better than PS4 games. You assume that I mean Wii U games therefore look bad. They don’t. Super Mario 3D World had some jaw-dropping levels. Pikmin 3 looked really good aside from the ground textures. Tell me how I’m contradicting myself?

Heck, there was a substantial gap between the Wii and PS3 and yet the Wii still had some good-looking games.

          4. The Wii U uses flash memory while the ps4 uses a traditional hard drive. Flash memory is faster but much more expensive. A 1tb traditional hard drive is about $60-70 while a 1tb SSD (which is flash based memory) costs about $600-700

      1. Why are pieces of shit like you still bitching and crying about Wii U’s internal memory? Get over it you cry baby. Wii U + 100GB internal memory = more expensive than it is now. Wii U + external HDD = still cheaper than a PS4.

        1. They only complain because their beloved media tells them too…

Humans today have zero independent opinions…

          1. SherlockWillFightBilbo

Couldn’t someone say the reason you’re NOT complaining is because YOUR beloved media tells you not to?

Couldn’t someone say you have zero independent opinions?

        2. At least its not trying to go all digital like Xbox “Betamax” One. The freaking optical disc option and game format in stores is still present and relevant.

Fuckig fools complaining over storage is just desperate for a reason to bitch about anything they claim to hate because they’re selfish and shameful.

  1. What could be in the game?Online MP???????I’m certain Nintendo made sure there is no such feature in a multiplayer game

        1. ! ur a troll!
          Tekken
          Black ops
          Sonic Racing
          AC3 + 4
          Madden
          Fifa 13
          3D World
          Pikmin 3
          Nano Assault Neo ect
and soon Smash, MK8, X, possibly bayonetta 2
          dk also has leader boards.
          HAVE ONLINE!

              1. its like last on the list as you don’t actually play online. but :Black ops
                Sonic Racing
                AC3 + 4
                Madden
Fifa 13 have online and smash +mk8 will definetly do too.

            1. You must be stupid after being proven wrong because those games do have online components. Its not all about having “COD”-like online which is shit you dipshit.

    1. I buy physical for everything I can. except eshop only games or if its in a bundle, like my gold xl with Zelda. im hoping in the future I will be able to save everything + prohress on a 3ds cartridge (that they wil sell)put a homemade Zelda label on and use it in the next gen systems :P

unless you can transfer all ( including progresss, im not starting everything again) to next gen.

but that’s me. physical copies rule.

    1. I prefer digital only, 1) I don’t ever have to worry about disks getting scratched or lost. 2) its so much easier to tap an icon of the game I want to play it, and its less to carry around if I go on vacation or go to a freinds house.

  2. you realise that having a respectably sized hard drive would add $50+ to the cost of the Wii U – for memory that many people would not use. Better to keep the cost of the console down and allow people to use an EHD if they wish. The only mistake is not having an official Nintendo EHD.

  3. Why people want a digital copy that eats up a third of your memory as opposed to just buying a physical copy I’ll never know.

    1. Some people are too lazy to switch discs it seems, who knows. I will be getting the physical copy regardless of knowing this.

      1. People may decide digital copies for a number of reasons:

        1. To have less crowded space of discs/cases
        2. To have a copy of a game without fear of damage or loss
        3. Saving money – (No matter how you look at it) Buying digital versions of a game is, sometimes or moderately usual, cheaper than retail. I found myself buying digital Nintendo games without paying taxes or on sale compare to retail so technically digital can be cheaper in a sense.
        4. Redownload via account for free so if you pay for a digital content and if lost/deleted, you can always retrieve it without paying again (as for Nintendo’s system link BS, they will be addressing that soon so hang in there)

I get the argument about the storage size but looking at the business standpoints and focus of its usage, digital purchases is optional instead of being standard so there shouldn’t be much of an argument anyway.

        1. Yeah and I definitely get those points, but I’m one to take care of my games. I have a game I got four years ago and it doesn’t even have a scratch, lol. I also like to collect games, so I guess what ever someone prefers is always best.

    2. 1) because you can go online and buy a USB 3.0 drive for 500gb for 30$ and the adapter cord for 2$.
      2) not all games well be on disk, which by the way well only go to 25GB so this game already takes about half of the disk space
      3) its long as to carry if I travel or go to a friends house
      4) its simply more convenient, I can just download a game, and when I want to play I can just tap the icon, when I want to change games I just go to the home menu (which you have to do any ways) and then I can just tap a new game.
      5) its also a lot less clutter laying around.
      6) not to sound like a duche bag, but its also better for the environment to not waste all that plastic.

  4. On the ps4 you buy the physical disc and a game takes up to 20 to 35GB to install… So what’s the point of buying the game physical when it takes away your GB space???

        1. Ughhh why do people only pick one system? How dull.
also Nintendo makes more money if they sell digital, so its better for the company if their fans buy their digital games, they also said that once their account system is set in, then you well be able to bring our digital games over to their new system, and that means that their new system well be free to use either a new disk player, or go diskless

          1. Some people, especially those whose parents buys these consoles for them, cant really afford maintaining multiple systems.
For me its not money, its time, that’s why I only have Wii U and PC for now.
If PS4 ever gets a must have game for me, then I’ll consider it.

Seeing as physical can be 10-20€ cheaper here, I’m not in any hurry to go all digital.

  5. Digital copies would be a good thing IF and only IF:
1 They are significantly cheaper, I still cannot understand how games are always a lot cheaper in retail stores.

2 Nintendo (and others) make their games available for us to download at any time or they allow the option of creating a backing up. What if you want to play your game in, let’s say. 10 years time! we have paid for it and should be able to. Currently companies have the right to withdraw content and there is no guarantee for the consumer after a first download (or that’s the way I feel)

    3. Your purchases are kept in your account and carry onto the next generations so there is no need to purchase the content again (maybe a small fee for updating your library to the new system but nothing like repurchasing games that you already bought 5,10,15 years ago type of thing)

Digital copies should be a good thing, they could avoid a waste of resources producing physical disc, covers, etc. The price of games could be considerably lower as no need of distribution cost (transport, storage…) it also avoid whatever retail percentage is applied to sold games among others.

Cheaper games could lead to an increase in consumption and maybe contribute to lower piracy.

But the 3 points I just wrote here are only some of the issues that make digital copies way less attractive than a plain disc nowadays.

    1. 1. They abide by the MSRP, think I read somewhere that they kinda have to?
Retailers have to clear out their stocks for new games, and they have a lot of competition.
Sometimes can find a game 20€(~24$) cheaper at retailer than on eShop.
Only rare exception being Deus Ex, that was actually cheaper at eShop.

      2. That depends on what you agree on the EULA.
For example, Valve lets you download and backup all your games within certain time frame, if Valve would go under.
I don’t know how consoles go, but don’t think its as simple.

      3. That would be ideal. But since architecture changes every generation, it is not really plausible.
Even on PC, some older games wont work with new hardware, or require major tweaking to get them work.
To get a PS3 game to work on PS4, would require rewriting almost the whole game, and optimizing it would eat away any possibility of just small upgrade fee.
Nintendo should be able to bring the whole Wii catalog to Wii U, since the console has the hardware for it, but dont know if Nintendo’s next console will be backwards compatible.
If Sony and Microsoft sticks with x86, then it would be easier to bring previous generation games to next consoles.

But anyways, I hope those 3 points get fixed in the near future, and that they forget that god awful cloud gaming plan they have going on.
I could be fine with it, if it was just for oldest games.

  6. Who would even think about downloading? Have you not seen that AWESOME blue box with the colorful environments?! And 11 GB is nothing compared to my 2TB. :P Still not downloading though.

  7. No, it’s not the biggest. I remember Lego City: Undercover (or whatever it was called) being twenty gigabytes in size, or thereabouts.
