Youtuber Gets The Lowest Possible Finishing Score In Super Mario Bros

Youtuber NotEntirelySure completed the iconic Super Mario Bros on the NES with the lowest score possible. NotEntirelySure used every trick in the book to finish the game with just 500 points. Here’s what he had to say about his achievement.

Well, I did it. This is THE lowest possible score you can finish the game with (without continuing). And surprisingly, it didn’t take very long at all. Sadly, it’s not deathless, as I miss my first attempt at the 8-1 wall jump. Getting 500 points without dying would have been nice, but that jump is so brutally precise I’d rather not restart every time I missed it (though I would have to restart anyway if I accidentally picked up a coin).

How tough is that jump in 8-1? Well, the timing of the liftoff, the duration of holding the jump button, and the timing of the wall jump are all frame perfect. NES games run at 60 frames per second, which means all the necessary inputs need to be timed within 1/60 of a second. In addition, the starting position before running I used not only has to be on the right pixel, but also the x sub-pixel has to fall within a certain range (technical stuff blah blah blah). In short, it’s a pretty annoying jump.

Amazingly enough, I managed to accomplish my objective after my first successful 8-1 wall jump in a run. I was extremely cautious for the remainder of the run, not risking jumping over any of the hammer bros. I also had a few panicky moments since I was fairly jittery, but luckily nothing that cost me the run. By the end I felt like my heart was going to explode.

The other couple tricks I used I explain in the 600 point video. I leave in the death to evidence my humanity, and to showcase how precise you need to be to pull off that wall jump. There is literally no room for error.

No save states or slowdown was used. I did however fast-forward at flagpoles for obvious reasons. (also, I didn’t look at the RAM during the run to make sure the sub-pixel was within the right range)

Thanks, David

Thank you for pointing out that you don’t know the meaning of games…

Obviously you must have been born sometime after the year 1998 because if you were older you would know that games is all about having fun and competing against others and yourself…

Compared to today’s “gaming”, the ancient times were so much better and hell of a lot more fun and what you Xbots and Sonyans loves to say, “Hardcore” than today’s abysmal baby easy games that I can finish without any arms or eyes…

      1. I’d have to agree with you here. I have Super Castlevania IV and Mega Man on Wii VC, and compared to modern games, those are brutally hard. But old games are so much more fun. If you haven’t thrown the controller at the wall at least once, it isn’t challenging enough, haha.

          Haha indeed…

Back in those days, the injuries and anger suffered by us gamers made the injuries from the Wii Remotes utterly useless…

            1. I thought Castelvania Rebirth on Wii was pretty tough going through it the first time, but it has nothing over Castlevania 3 in terms of difficulty…actually I don’t think any Castlevania was as tough for me as that one.

          1. Try Castlevania 3 on the NES if you want to add some 8-bit hair to your chest. Bonus points for beating it without alucard or grant.

Well I think I have mixed it up a bit…

Ancient Times: The war between Nintendo and Sega so yes you’re right, until 1997…

Then I guess the era predating it must be the Golden Age considering we had about 81% of the gaming universe and the Atarians destroyed themselves while we saved the universe…

So I was already at war during the Golden Age…

However I was not even born when the Origin Era began which is everything predating the Game&Watch…

          1. Haha. I like it. I’d say
Gen 1: the age of creation
Gen 2: the age of decline and the great cataclysm
Gen 3: the first coming and the age of the holy one
Gen 4: the age of the great war
Gen 5: the age of enlightenment
Gen 6: the rise of evil
Gen 6: the second coming and the age of triumph
            Gen 7: …we’ll see…

              Nice!

To put each generation into an era, then it would be like this:

              Age of Creation: Gen 1

The Golden Age: Gen 2 and First Half of Gen 3

The Ancient Age: Second Half of Gen 3, Gen 4 and Gen 5

The Corrupted Age: Gen 6 And Gen 7

              Current Age is undefined…

I don’t hate Playstation, it merely doesn’t appeal to me to a degree that it warrants purchase…

          I hate Xbox though…

    2. Almost ever retro gamer will find this interesting. Anything interesting is news. Dying straight away is easy, this kind of run has never been done. But you’re entitled to your really dumb opinions.

    3. And your a brainless chimp!!!!????
What’s next? You getting more butthurt and replying argily at and saying “LMFAO” to hide your butthurt!!???
      lololololololololololol

This is how you you talk, and its also how stupid you look.
      LMFAO.

    4. ok, so let’s see you beat the entire game without getting more than 500 points, that means no mushrooms, no coins, and you can’t kill any enemy, people can tell you didn’t watch the video

  2. I’ve never thought to go for the lowest possible score on this game I usually just speed run my record being 5 mins 27 secs I really wanna try this now

  3. That is verrry hard, so that’s pretty impressive! I do have to say that I miss the older games. We may have more cinematics nowadays, but nothing can beat the classics. I remember how tough Battletoads was and the Mario games were no joke either. Nothing shall beat the classic era!

  4. OMG
i dont know what is harder… speed run or this :-)

of course this not a news, like the most people wanted, bud for (old) gamers
    fascinating ;-)
    Thx for this post.

  5. I know I’ll get flamed for this:

Lowest score = Impressive. Really? I know you have to go through a lot to get that, but… Lowest? Not highest? Not fastest? Not sure if it even qualifies as a world record.

Again, this person had to do a lot to achieve this… I don’t know.

    1. The fact that it’s the ‘Lowest’ score makes it both mediocre and impressive.

I just hope they didn’t dedicate too much time towards them, but “yay” for them I guess.
