To be eligible for the promotion you must register a handheld and one of the following games between March 1 and 31: Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins and Yoshi’s New Island. Once tied to your Club Nintendo account, Nintendo will issue you with a download code for Pokemon X or Y, which must be redeemed by May 31, 2014.

Nintendo of America has officially announced a new promotion today after it was rumoured consumers would be able to get their hands on a free copy of Pokemon X or Y when purchasing a Nintendo family handheld. For those who purchase or register a Nintendo 3DS, 3DS XL or 2DS system, as well as one of six select games to a Club Nintendo account, they will receive a free download code for Pokemon X or Y.

Does it specify whether a system has to be purchased between the provided dates or just registered? I have a system from Christmas that I have yet to register.
If you haven’t registered it yet, I assume it would be eligible for the promotion, providing you’ve also bought and have yet to register one of the selected six games.

You have both of the required system and game and haven’t registered in Club Nintendo yet, then do so sometime in March to register both and a free PKMN X or Y is yours.

I don’t understand why they don’t do these types of promotions for the Wii U to try and drum up sales. Still it is pretty sweet though.
So if we bought ours in the summer, registered it then and have animal crossing for example, we’re not eligible ? That’s kind of wack. It should apply no matter when you got it.
This is the exact reason I didn’t register my Mario and Luigi 3DS XL when I got it at Christmas, I was hoping there would be another promotion like this. I got Mario land 3d last time they did this using my original 3DS.

Does that mean I have to do both those actions or I only need to do one of then and I can get it?
If you’ve purchased a 3DS/2DS in the past but have not yet registered it to US Club Nintendo, you will be eligible for the free download code, providing you register one of the six games as well.
But if you’ve purchased a 3DS/2DS and have already registered it, you will not be eligible for the promotion. I’ve linked the FAQ somewhere further up in the comments if you’re unsure! :)
DANG IT! I had an impulse moment!!!!!
I was getting a 3DS XL this Sunday and getting Yoshi’s New Island. WOW! Who’d of thought this would’ve happened right when I was gonna get one?! Awesome! :’)
Oh no…. i registered a 3DS XL the past week. So, i can’t go for the promotion. :(
