Nintendo To Showcase A Variety Of Wii U Indie Titles At GDC 2014

The Game Developers Conference kicks off in San Francisco next week and Nintendo will be in attendance to showcase a variety of indie games arriving on the Wii U. Between March 17 – 21, indie games developed with Unity Pro will be available to play to all those attending the event.

The Big N will also show this year’s GDC attendees how the Nintendo Web Framework (NWF) development tool was used to create a new game demo with characters from the Mario vs. Donkey Kong franchise. The game demo shows how developers can create great experiences using NWF, and that the user-friendly, full-featured tool expands access to developing Wii U games to as many people as possible. Steve Singer, vice president of Licensing at Nintendo of America said the following in support of NWF and Unity:

“We want to demonstrate to developers how easy it is for them to bring their creative ideas to Nintendo systems. Nintendo offers wide-ranging support for indie developers, whether they want to use NWF, Unity or their own proprietary code.”

Nintendo of America’s business development manager Dan Adelman will be on hand to explain the process of releasing games on the eShop with a step-by-step guide on Thursday, March 20,  between 10.45am – 11.15am. GDC’s attendees will find Nintendo in Unity Booth No. 1402 throughout the week, where they can check out the indie games listed below.

  • Armillo – Fuzzy Wuzzy Games
  • Ballpoint Universe: Infinite – Arachnid Games
  • Cubemen 2 – Nnooo
  • Ittle Dew – Ludosity AB
  • Monkey Pirates – Henchmen Studio
  • Nihilumbra – BeautiFun Games
  • Stick It to the Man – Zoink & Ripstone
  • Teslagrad – Rain Games

  1. Indies are taking over. It’s about time. They have lived in the shadow of corporate giants for far too long. I am glad more indie studios have been getting exposure over the past few years because there are some true gems out there.

    1. Well sure, but if you’re focussed on selling a console, indies won’t do the trick.
In GDC’s case indies are perfect. Simply because it’s pretty much an indie developer expo more than anything else.

  2. The selection of playable indie games looks a bit disappointing. There are better indie games coming to the eShop that are not included.

They seem to be focusing on games developed with Unity though. Perhaps the likes of Scram Kitty, QUBE, Hyper Light Drifter and other awesome looking titles are not made with Unity.

Seems odd also that Block Drop U isn’t represented, as it’s the first game made using the Nintendo Web Framework which they’ll be promoting at the conference.

      1. Well, they’ve all had pretty extensive trailers. And:

Scram Kitty is due for release next month. So it’s either finished, or damn near finished..

QUBE is a port of an old game. I have trouble believing that isn’t ready to show.

Hyper Light Drifter is the only one I can really see not being ready for playable demos.

But they may not be made using Unity which all the games Nintendo are showing, seem to be. And there could be loads of other reasons they’re not there really. I’m just a bit disappointed in the games they are showing. Armillo and Ballpoint Universe are the only interesting ones to me.

        1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

Possibly, I guess they will probably say something a long those lines that they are only showcasing games using Unity…

    1. Nintendo Commander Quadraxis

That’s actually all they have been doing so far, promoting the games of the Tribes…

  3. Wow that will help the wiiu sell more makeing more indie games great job nintendo man I really hope the wiiu dose not fail like the dreamcast

  4. sad. i thought they would show some normal games, but no.. indies.. some indies are great, dont get me wrong, but mostly its shovelware

  5. I think this is great for Nintendo to showcase some indie games on their console since people have taken notice of how well indie games can thrive. I’ll be curious to see if they don’t announce other indie games in the works.
