Japan: Nintendo 3DS Sells 35K, Wii U Sells 7K

This week’s Japanese hardware and software charts are now in from Japan. Sales figures are once again on the low side due to the massive adoption of smartphone gaming in Japan. It’s with no new games, once MK8 is out, I expect these numbers to reach a minimum of 35.000 units for a few weeks and then hold on steadily around 15.000…

      1. If MK8 doesn’t boost sales, then trolls all over the world will rejoice. Especially Sasori. :(

          1. A boost in sales might happen but definitely with no help from you since you don’t even own a Wii U…

              1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

What about you? Do you even own one to attack & criticize it? If not, you should quit posting here too if you want to play that card. Double standards is for people that don’t want to lose an argument because they are so desperate to be “right.”

            1. I own one, and sadly even I know it’s done for.

The only games worth playing now are MK8 and Windwaker HD.

TWO GAMES, one if which isn’t even out yet and will likely lose it’s appeal once the novelty of the pretty graphics and upside down racing wears off and becomes repetative like almost every MK game does after a while :/

I’d be more excited if a new Zelda HD and a Metroid HD (side scroller or at LEAST a Halo-style FPS) were on the nearby horizon. But sadly, no announcements for either yet even, let alone concept art or early screens :(

        1. Who cares about trolls they obviously have nothing to contribute to.life except negativity just ignore them world is better without them

          1. name of the game is u got to lose money to make money. Iwata playing it smart. Gates says sell thr xbox off, I dont care. Sony loses a billion dollars again... but no one cares and still ps4 sells em for some reason. nintendo is the only company not flopp

Whats does 8400 ps,4 mean this week… wii u sell steady 8000 a weak, ps4 is dying faster than vita at this time in life cycle. Wii U is going to sell more units than it by next week. Its not just the wii u dying its cosoles are dead. All consoles. PC and mobile is all u need. Deficated systems are an obsolete model out preformed by sleeker and more updatable to the minut units. I love my Nintendo…. but they will have to succumb to the third party publishing status if their next hardware models arent recieved as being better than apple in the next gen… thatd be gen 7 -for nibtendo superstitions this is good sign something mind blowing is coming. NINTENDO IS GAMING.

            1. Nintendo isnt going mobile but I agree the fusion is real a new handheld will be out in 2016 and the home console hub will be out 2017:)

          2. Yet you keep going on about how Nintendo is dying yet it’s Sony that are the one’s dying.

You really do fail at trying to troll because this news doesn’t really “piss me off”, more like comedy for my ears at how horribly you damage control ;)

If Wii U is dying then the Xbox One is already 10 feet underground.

They think just because the Wii U’s been out for a year with barely any good sales that it’s doing worse than the Xbox One & PS4. They’d be right IF last year was full of big name titles like Zelda, Metroid, Mario Kart, X, Bayonetta 2, Smash, Watch_Dogs, etc coming out monthly.

            2. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the Xbox 360 have bad sales during it’s first year?

                1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

xD Wow. Where was all the “Playstation 3 & Sony is doomed” talk from those 3 years? I don’t recall a single article saying something to that effect.

                2. Except the only reasons PS3 did badly was the price and development difficulty.

Two things Wii U doesn’t suffer from. The problem is that it’s way too underpowered, the tablet is unnecessary and doesn’t add any incentive to developers past a novelty, and now, sales figures (and thus market interest) is so low that no big third-party developers dare waste time and money creating ports for their AAA titles, much less a Wii U exclusive.

        1. Not really. It’ll boost sales MAYBE for a few weeks, but that’s it and it won’t boost them nearly enough to keep Nintendo’s head above water.

I don’t think you understand quite how badly a spot Nintendo is in with the Wii U. Not only that, but Nintendo has historically not faired well at E3 in recent years, and in the last couple, has actually opted out of the main shows which haven’t faired well at all.

It is therefore baffling to me why they continue to do so. Furthermore, it’s also extremely and frustratingly odd that they have so few AAA first party titles. Why no Zelda, Metroid, F-Zero, et cetera? They should have been cranking out one of these every 4-6 months in the beginning of the console’s cycle. Obviously they shouldn’t have rushed them and pushed out a bunch of slapped-together hacks, but rather began preparation of them in advance of the console’s release. Coming off the heels of the enormous success (financially, as it were), that should have been no problem.

Wii U, despite being underpowered by comparison to XB1 and PS4 (especially being that a measurable amount of said already-lacking power is used for the tablet controller), it still lends itself to the possibility of great looking & very fun HD first party titles; An HD version of Zelda & Metroid are absolute no-brainers, as is F-Zero.

These titles would not only sell consoles, but would also show third party developers that the console is a viable platform for their titles, even if they would have to be downscaled from PC and XB1/PS4.

The damage is done though, and it has been quite long (too long) to be able to recover lost ground simply by releasing a the EIGHTH version of a game that many people haven’t liked playing since the Nintendo 64 version (which is still regarded as the/one of the best in the series to this day). The Mario Kart sales figures (posted not too long ago) clearly back this sentiment up.

Seems that the only real promising route is to do what they’re eluding to doing: beginning to build up hype for the Wii U’s successor, and to make sure they do it right. I know Nintedo is a proud company and likes to say, “We don’t bother ourselves with what other companies are doing”, but fact of the matter is that if they want to succeed: they need to start.

This isn’t the 1990’s where it’s just them & Sega, and all they have to worry about is “bits”. Things are different, gamers are different, and games are different. It’s great to “do your own thing”, but not at risk of alienating yourself from the market completely. After all, they’re making these consoles for US, not THEMSELVES.

          1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Ye of little faith. Even if it doesn’t become the titan seller that Wii was, it’ll still do well & it’ll survive just like the Gamecube did. If it ends with 20-25 million sold, that will be good enough for Nintendo. In the end, Nintendo will hold the attach rate higher than the overall console sales. If the attach rate is shit while the consoles sold remains under 15 million, then people can say the Wii U was a failure. Either way, I’ll be enjoying these next 4 years of the Wii U’s life as the other titles for it come out.

            1. This console is nowhere near on track to even come close to that of GameCube, which itself was perhaps not a failure, but certainly was not a “success” by any standard either.

Not to mention, the GameCube had far better third party support (if still anemic anyway, especially compared to the PS2 and original XBOX), and it also had more power capability to be able to handle the size of projects third party developers wanted to create.

Power isn’t EVERYTHING, obviously, but having at least enough of it to accomplish what developers wish to do IS a greatly important thing. That is something the Wii U just doesn’t have. When all is said and done, the Wii U (after considering power for the tablet controller), can barely handle projects with the scope and graphical capabilities of current-generation of PS3 and XBOX 360 games or slightly more. Developers have moved on to projects much larger and on a much bigger scale than that with PS4 and XBOX ONE. Games like Watch_Dogs, which the Wii U can just about handle at a graphically scaled-down rate, are just the first crude generation of games that developers have in mind. If the Wii U is barely able to support such a game and has to be scaled down just to do so, where does that leave developers in terms of what they can do with the console?

Not to mention, many of the new technologies and engines that will be used are currently bit supported on the Wii U, as that will only get worse as time goes by and these engines and tech get even more sophisticated and demand even more power..

In essence the Wii U, in about a year or maybe two, will not be able to handle a vast majority of titles from third-party developers. At all. Not even at scaled down versions. The console will just not have the power, and more than that: it won’t be compatible to run the engines and/or tech that is required, because developers will not forego using said tech just to be able to create a “watered down” port of their project/game for a console with such an anemic install base and lack of raw power.

Your misunderstanding is that time will help the Wii U; it is barely capable of withstanding first-gen games from developers creating games aimed at XB1 and PS4. As time goes by, even WITH some developers being able to learn the Wii U better and squeeze more potential out of it, the situation will still get worse in terms of being able (or NOT being able, as the case may be) to handle future titles.

This will result in Wii U having to rely on much smaller scale games, games that must be wholly new and unique, which is already a tough sell in a market where gamers prefer familiarity and are afraid to spend money on new things. Asking gamers to do so on a “weaker” console with fewer AAA third party support is a monumental challenge at best.

This is marketing 101, something I’m very, VERY familiar with, being that I’ve had a career in marketing as well as development for over a decade. Though I cannot predict the future, I’d venture to say my opinion holds more weight than most kids on this website, despite the childish remarks and insults that I frequently see and that I’m sure this post will attract.

  1. Why is Wii U selling almost the same every time? Wii U was made in Japan! (I think) How can it not sell in it’s own homeland? Wtf are they smoking? Or maybe it’s because they already pre ordered Mario Kart 8? Sigh. Hopefully, MK8 boosts sales…

    1. neither PS4 or wii u are gaining any ground there… the japanese just don’t seem to be into stationary consoles anymore

will be interesting to see the XBO sales.. heck i wonder why MS even bothers to bring it there
it is extremely likely that it will fail miserably

      1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Maybe they are playing it smart this time around & will release a small number of consoles. If there is a demand for more, then they’ll ship more.

      2. Doesn’t matter how the XBOX sells in Japan it’s one country, and in terms of the overall grande scheme of things, it matter very little to Microsoft.

XBOX ONE is doing quite well otherwise and will be doing even better now that the price is dropping $100 and has 4 classic Halo titles being remastered and released on it, so fans can play the entire series on one console all in updated graphics, sound effects, music, and full native 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second, not to mention a brand new Halo title with dedicated servers, 1080p, 60 frames per second, and a brand new engine built from the ground up and is coming out a year later. And a Halo TV show directed by Speilberg this fall as well!

Halo is the Mario of XBOX, and that alone sells consoles. Well. The original XBOX was bolstered almost exclusively by Halo: Combat Evolved. Sony is going to have their hands full now that the financial playing field is leveled, as will the power gap due to Kinect freeing up over 15% of the consoles overall power and resources.

Nintendo will have a hard road to hoe, more so than the already nearly insurmountable odds it is already facing.

    1. PS4 needs new games. It mainly sold because of hype. (And graphics) I heard this guy saying he wants GTA V on PS4 because the graphics would look amazing. I wanted to slap him, but that wouldn’t have been right… XD And I do KINDA agree though. GTA V is a pretty looking game. Lol.

      1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

If they port FFX-X2 HD & Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 Remix to the PS4, I’ll go & buy one before the year is even out.

          1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I know. Square Enix really should have had these games being fixed up for the PS4 instead since the console was just around the corner. Trying to lengthen the life of the PS3 apparently. This is one of the reasons why the PS4 isn’t really selling any better than the other two 8th gen consoles. Xbox One also has this as a problem but it’s their smallest problem; least it was their smallest problem til the Kinect-less Xbox One.

        1. I never had a PS3 (well, my brother did, but he sold it. P.S. I hate him lol) if they were ported to the PS4, I would have bought them all instantly…

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Most likely. Nintendo tends to be picky about the quality of a game before it’s released. You rarely hear of a game on a Nintendo console that is plagued with gamebreaking glitches & bugs.

          1. Zombi U and Batman AO, + random freezes on some other games.
But hey, Nintendo first party games (on Wii U) has been free of those.

            1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Like I said, rarely when compared to the hundreds of other games on Nintendo systems.

  2. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

I can’t wait to see what the sale’s figures will be for the week that Mario Kart 8 releases, for better or for worse.

  3. Hahah the Vita destory 3ds and wiiu HAHAAH #Nintendoomed#3ds$hóvelwareAndWeakUOutsoldByVita#NintendoPleaseUnderstand#IwataNeedsToGo#DeadAfter1YearWalkingDeadUConfirmed

    1. 3DS, are you looking at the same chart as everyone else? The 3DS outsold everything, 14 of the top 20 games are all 3DS.

      1. Hardware wise You blind Frog HAHAHA #NintendoDoomed#NintendronesMad#DamageControlBringItBitches

              1. You’re*

How is a concept so simple as contractions–a concept my 8 year old niece has a handle on–so difficult for 90% of people?

Oh, it’s “just the internet”? So it’s okay to look stupid? Or better yet: “it’s not a school essay”; I love that excuse, as if one has to think REALLY HARD about using “your” or “you’re”, lmao.

Or “English isn’t my native language”. I love that one, too. It’s for people who get called out and have no other excuse for their stupidity, yet you can go back and see ALL their posts in English and makes no mention at all to not speaking English as a primary language.

Laughable and pathetically sad at the same time. So what’s you’re excuse? I need a good laugh…

                :)

            1. Actually, what you are doing is pretty much damage control because you know that people know your logic is flawed and you’re protecting yourself like Sasori used to do by calling people “Social Rejects”, look were that got him. A nice cold place on Encyclopedia Dramatica

    2. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Hahahaha! Oh wait, you’re serious? Let me laugh even harder! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

The 3DS sales are starting to slow down because a majority of people that want the handheld already own it. As for Wii U, we’ll see who’s stomping who when the weeks of Mario Kart 8 releasing roll around. Til then, have fun with your “Nintendoomed” crap.

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Whatever you say, oh wise & mighty god! Next you’re going to tell me the sky is purple, right?

      1. You think MK8 is going to sell millions of consoles from now on? Lol. Wow. I am excited for the game too, honestly, but you’re delusional.

It’ll boost sales MARGINALLY, for a couple of weeks maybe. And then, it’ll be back to where it is now.

Don’t worry, I’ll be here to say, “I told you so” promptly :)

        1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Well we both have a right to our opinion. Mine is optimistic while yours is pessimistic. So if being optimistic is being delusional, oh well.

    3. You might want to look again there mate, the 3DS LL and the regular 3DS are pretty much ganging up on the PS4, PS3 and PSVita. Hell, Vita TV is doing poorly from what I can see.

      1. You doom Vita for low sales, yet you make excuses and say things like “MK8 will save Wii U!”

        Hypocrites. Blind, fanboy hypocrites.

People who are unwaveringly loyal to only one console or company and can admit no wrong doing by them has always baffled me and made me laugh. I feel genuinely sorry for you and fanboys of ANY one console/company.

  4. Well given where the sales of the PS4 are at now, I think it’s safe to say that Wii U is performing no worse than par for a home console in Japan right now.

  5. So Wii U can sell an average of 8K a week without a software release. Last year it couldn’t get this high. All they need is a steady launch of Wii U games.

  6. Ouch! Japan just doesn’t buy videogame systems anymore really. Nintendo and Sony need to figure out how to combat the mobile game market.

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

Or we need to accept the fact that video game consoles are going to be a niche market. It really wasn’t long ago that only around 15-25 million people were playing video games. Video games have only been this mainstream for a little over a decade now as it use to be a niche market.

  7. Hey why does this site show Japanese sales more than American sales numbers are the Japanese sales numbers documented more or something? just curious why we rarely get American sales numbers

    1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

This site is apparently a UK blog site since the only sale figures we ever get are the UK & Japan’s. If I had a USA Nintendo blog site, I’d only post the Japanese & United States’ numbers myself most of the time.
