Nintendo will launch its first mobile app in Japan tomorrow. The gaming giant has teamed up with Japanese mobile operator Docomo to release a new app which allows 3DS owners to tether the device to their smartphones. Named “Easy Tethering for Nintendo 3DS”, the Google Play app will launch on the following five new smartphone models and two tablets in accordance with Docomo:
- Samsung Galaxy S5, launching May 15
- Sony Xperia Z2, launching May 21
- Aquos Zeta, launching May 23
- Arrows NX, launching in late May
- Sony Xperia A2, launching in mid-June
- Aquos Pad, launching mid-June
- Sony Xperia Z2 Tablet, launching in late June
Nintendo’s new app will be free and allow 3DS users to connect or link their device to smartphones with an easy-to-set-up guide, promising no extra hassle for a portable internet service. Plus, those who download the app can obtain a free 3DS virtual console download of Nintendo’s choosing by participating in a survey available from July until September 30.
The collaboration with Docomo and the release of a tethering mobile app is just one of the new ways Nintendo is expanding communications with consumers onto smartphones, which was promised in the investor’s briefing back in January.

It means they can use 3G/4G from their phone to make 3DS go online.

Yeah you don’t need this app to tether your 3DS to your phone. It’s super easy to do it without it.
I’ve updated the wording slightly in the article, but it just means to link up your 3DS to a smart device, which then creates a portable (and shared) wireless connection between the two devices.
i work in the telecom industry as a computer programmer … i take breaks and see what’s happening on this website all the time … even i didn’t know what “tether” meant.
it makes sense now … although, i have 3 internet access providers in my home … i’m never without some easy access method … :P
Your 3DS connects to your phone to get Internet access through your phone’s 3G or 4G service.

I can do this already. GOOGLE already has WiFi Sharing built in to Android OS in settings. Why need an additional app? Settings>WiFi Sharing>Enable
Iphones can do it to via connecting your 3DS to your phone’s connection. Im guessing the app makes it easier or something?

I just can’t understand this. Android Smartphone already have the tethering feature for every device : Pc,Ps3,XBOX,other androids, and even 3DS. I have tested it. Congrats to Nintendo for giving their money for nothing.

Some devices don’t work well with the 3DS using tethering/shared mobile hot spot. I think this is just made to simplify the connection. It may also be that the provider doesn’t actually offer tethering or this is a free use of tethering that doesn’t require the user to have a tethering package. I know nothing of Docomo’s plans, pricing or services though, so I can only guess based on my knowledge working for T-Mobile. But our plans and services may vary greatly to Japan’s.

Holy shit. Is this a sign that Nintendo is now considering cellular technology on their console? I smell yet another direct overkill for their next handheld against the next portable PS. :3
It sounds like this is just to simplify connecting to your 3DS. Whether it makes a WiFi connection only 3DS can pick up or just makes it quicker, who knows. I’m sure we’ll get all the details tomorrow when it comes out. It does seem kinda pointless, but is anyone commenting actually from Japan? Docomo’s services may be a lot different to those elsewhere.
If I lived in Japan, or if I owned a smartphone, this would be relevant to me. But since I’m in the U.S. and my 2DS connects just fine to Wi-fi (and I don’t need to play online games on my 3D everywhere I go) all I can say is… cool. :)

Well I can easily turn my Windows phone into a hotspot accessible by my 3DS, So I’m happy for whomever this benefits, but I’ve been tethered for some time already.
