Mario Kart 8 players have discovered a new technique for maintaining much-needed speed throughout races. The new move is called Fire Hopping and basically allows players to maintain a speed boost via hopping. Fire Hopping works on everything except inner drifting bikes. Reddit user, KaiserYoshi, explains how it works “Apparently, you lose speed faster when in contact with the ground, so jumping repeatedly at the end of a boost will keep you going slightly faster for a slightly longer time.” Some gamers appear to be embracing it while others are calling on Nintendo to deliver a patch.

Yeah, I was kinda thinking that. Also, it’s dangerous. If you don’t hop just right, you can lose control of your cart. It works, but you have to use it several times without error or else it does more damage than good.
I spent last night trying it out. I don’t think it needs patched. It’s fun to give drivers a reward for being creative. It’s not like an Xbox or PS4 “hack” it’s just creative driving. Also, bikes with inner drifting already have an advantage.
It needs to be patched right away so i’m sure it will be. Time trials are ruined but lets hope they patch it before everyone starts to do it and ruin online vs mode.
I just don’t know if it’s really that great of an exploit, but I’m indifferent on this one.

Looks fun? Having to constantly hop around would suck out my enjoyment of the game fairly quickly. The kicker is that it gives an unfair advantage to karts. I suggest you make the most of it now while it’s here, and hopefully Nintendo patch it so that the game doesn’t start to revolve around irritating glitches mechanics.
Bikes already had an advantage to karts, so if anything, it evens the playing field.

And the animations, it’s pretty much the same animation that Nintendo use on their Direct videos but I created everything myself like. I am thinking of creating a new channel trailer. It could be the same intro with actual video content or a new look completely. What you think? I was just talking to a guy on Black Ops II there and he was saying he really likes the channel, its looks well organised and that! It’s still only a newish channel (2 months now)!

Bikes are not at a disadvantage. Knowing how a bike works in reality helps a little. But that deep curve u can take on a bike is unmatched while coming out straight with a boost. I am using the Yoshi Bike exclusively now because it allows my Mii drift to the outside of a curve, then it turns in hard to make the turn, its awesome
you do know that drifting to the outer side of a curve will make you travel more distance right?

Not really. People good at using bikes tend to have slightly boosted acceleration due to the built in physics of the bikes. If used and abused correctly, drifting can allow a bike user to maintain speed during sharp turns while cutting people off, which in turn irritates a lot of racers. Believe me, I am pretty sure Nintendo knew what they were doing when they added in that mechanic.

The game needs a massive patch, not only for fire hopping, we need the map on screen, the possibility to custom buttons and all the lobbies and statistics online need improvements

Why on earth would you check the map? I never do & I’m enjoying it just fine.
Checking to see what items the racers had and how far I was ahead of the other racers. Checking to see if someone has a red shell or blue shell is actually very helpful in order to prepare yourself in advance. It would just be a good option to have the map on the screen if people want it.
I just try my best in each race & take the pain every time. Each to their own but you are right about the option of having the map for folks who want it.
Not really a big issue for me either, but right, it would be optimal for those who want to find the most comfortable display settings to suit their racing needs.

checking how far ahead you are can be done with a quick push of x.. just a tiny fraction of a second is enough.. if you can’t see them it’s far enough for the moment^^

I guess it’s not really the map, but more of the item overview. In actuality, I would rather have the gamepad just display the map and have the item/rank display on screen to the side or on the bottom right corner, slightly faded.
This is not really a big issue. It would just be nice to have the option of changing the settings of the displays. I mean, the horn on the gamepad should not be the default display, haha. It should be the map imo.

We don’t need a map on screen. Just play without worrying about the map. Besides the map makes the game screen look cluttered.

Should be patched, it is an exploit in the end and its single sided. They should also fix the item rate for coins, 1-4th place should only get the stupid things.
Mario Kart 8’s item system doesn’t work depending on your place, it determines your distance from other racers and doesn’t take into account your place apart from obvious exceptions such as a blue in 1st place.

How lame. That needs a patch as soon as possible, but since we know how bad Nintendo’s online infrastucture is and how Nintendo isn’t really into patching their games very often, people will probably have to deal with this crap for a while.
At least they actually eventually patched the Maka Wuhu glitch even though when I emailed them before they said they had no plans to.
Yea I was thinking about that glitch exactly while writing my comment. It totally killed the fun but it took them a while to finally get themselves to fix it. And about your email, well, it definitely doesn’t help to tell someone who actually spent money on their game + console that they didn’t have any plans on fixing a major issue like that. At least they did it in the end.
There’s also a problem with Battle mode that needs fixed. I like how tracks are now in battle mode, makes matches longer. But, people who are already fucking out can attack and take away balloons from players who are still in. Total bullshit in my opinion. I was in first place and ended up in 4th because of invisible people throwing turtle shells at me…………………………

I understand fully, I don’t care that ghosts aren’t earning anything. The point is, the people who are winning should only have to worry about people who are still in the game. Total bullshit I lose one balloon from someone who lost already.
I don’t like the battle mode at all honestly. I’ve spent most of my time in grand prix and online racing. I have 3 stars in all courses at 50, 100, and 150cc. I just have to complete mirror mode now.
I don’t like the fact that they used the racing tracks as the battle stages. The maps are just too big, and you spend most of the time looking for the other opponents, not to mention the ghost dilemma as well. Playing in the battle arenas in past MKs were fun because they offered a more enclosed environment, causing there to be more mayhem = more fun. I’m really hoping that Nintendo will add battle arenas in future DLC.
The worst stage is the yoshi one, I didn’t even hit anyone cause I couldn’t find anyone. lol

That way, you get your last gen console & someone, who will actually want & appreciate the Wii U, is able to buy a Wii U for cheaper at Gamestop. It’s a win win. It’s not nearly as cheap or difficult to pull off as Snaking was, so I don’t see the issue with it staying in, but for the sake of not having anything unintentional in the game, I wouldn’t complain if they patched it.

Well, you could look at this news in a positive light. Now Nintendo can look over some other balancing issues in the game should they decide to patch. A fix in the battle mode would be good as well. I don’t understand how they simply couldn’t stick with the N64 formula that worked. Surely one of the developers realized that making narrow, one way courses into battle stages as opposed to open arenas of the N64 era was a bad idea?

I don’t see a problem with it… it’s a legitimate and difficult strategy, similar to making sure you shook the Wii Remote or had to hit the right bumper when you went off a ledge… it’s not cheating, it’s how you play the game.

Seriously though it shouldn’t matter that you lose, just have fun with online and you will get better as time goes by. This exploit is not that big of deal, it barely does anything.
For instance in racing, there are many aspects in winning a race, just because someone may be faster doesn’t always mean they will win because of that.

I’ve been racing with carts and bikes and some other things… that trick is not a hindrance to other players and there’s a saying “if you can’t beat them, join them”.
If you suck at Mario Kart, don’t jump to other levels because 100 and 150cc will only make it worse. Practice makes perfect. Practice on time trials with your ghost and you’ll realise it’s all in the technique.
If some peolpe still points to other games to persuade you to stop playing Mario Kart 8 look at it this way. You are having fun and he’s NOT. Now do your best at Mario Kart and let’s all have fun at the tracks.

Hit your Wii with a TF2 wrench.
Here’s what you got to do, take your disc, put it in middle of a frying pan, be sure its middle, that’s important.
Now place the frying pan on a stove, crank up the heat as far as you can.
Now this is important, you have to follow these timings exactly.
20 minutes on electrical stove, 10 minutes on gas stove, no more, no less.
Then you take your Wii console, be sure its plugged in, now take a pair good sturdy scissors, and cut the wire before the power brick.
Now if that was not enough, with wiimotes in your both hands, place both ends of the cord you just cut in to your mouth.
If you follow these instructions to the letter, it should work.

I’ve been doing a lot of reason about this and it seems that it could become beneficial at times, but it’s also something that could, potentially, ruin the Mario Kart gaming experience for others, especially while playing on-line.
I’ve learned how to use it, but honestly, it ruins the thrill of coming close to other experienced players, when playing on-line. So, I’ve learned it, just in case someone wants to be that person and use it to just Win all the time, then I will use the “technique” as well.
I say Nintendo patches this as soon as possible.

They should patch Mario Kart 8′s item system instead. I don’t get why it doesn’t work depending on your place anymore, it feels hopeless when you’re hitting a bad position and will only receive a single green shell to come back.
I think it’s based on the distances between players now. If you’re in second place, but still a mile behind first place, you can still get a bullet bill, or three red shells!
I know but I really think it’s dumb when you’re in 11th place to just get a green shell because you’re right behind the 10th player…
Sure, that seems stupid. But beeing in 6th place, when 1st place is right in front of the rest of you, why should you get something better than those right in front of you, or right behind (and even right beside you)?

Nothing wrong with this. It isn’t broken snaking like in MKDS. If anything, this’ll be the metagame after the bikes got nerfed a little.
People just complain about anything that isn’t plain old drifting. I didn’t see snaking as a concern personally but this is even less of an exploit. It just seems like it’s to do with the new physics.
It cuts 15-20 seconds off a race time, so yeah it needs to be patched. Once a few people start winning every race by half a lap it will kill online. An for those saying items can stop it, uhhh nooo they wont. Once you get so far ahead it doesnt matter how many items you get hit with you still just gonna pull away again.
