We finally have some information about Nintendo’s Quality of Life product that will be available in the financial year ending March 2016. One of the functions of the device will be to measure a user’s fatigue and map their sleep. Nintendo has teamed up with ResMed Inc which is renowned for creating products that help people sleep. Iwata says he expects its healthcare division to turn a profit in 2015/2016.
“The device will be about the size of a hand and can be placed on a user’s bedside table. It will use microwave transmission sensors to track sleep, with the data collected used to help users cultivate healthy sleeping habits.”
“By using our know-how in gaming… to analyse sleep and fatigue, we can create something fun,” Iwata said. “We only start something new if we think we will be able to create a big market, but as I’m not able to discuss pricing plans and other details today I don’t think there’s much point in giving a figure for our projected scale,” he said.
Thanks to those who sent this in.
I hope this ISN’T what Nintendo goes for because I think Nintendo should just stick to Video Games
They have allready said that this does not affect their game department, and that it is aimed at a different group of people.
Quality of Life looks really lame. :/ Oh well, whatever. If you like things watching you while you sleep, then this is for you.
Actually, wearable technology is a HUGE market right now and it generates crazy amounts of profit. Jawbone, Nike+ fuel band.. its not necessarily something that ‘watches you sleep’, it’s for people who are really health conscious and I’m sure you know as the world is progressing people are becoming increasingly aware of their health. I think Nintendo have gone the right way with this as the market for such products is relatively new.
I think it’s cool that Nintendo is pursuing other things, meaning they’re keeping up with the market.
Btw I’m just using wearable tech as an example – anything that monitors health is popular these days.
Everyone is becoming health nuts because of watching too much Dr. Oz. *sigh* I know. I have 3 famly members who’s minds are corrupted from watching that crap.
uhh, or maybe people are just more educated than you?
And if you are a middle age man that has a stressful job that involves a lot of travels and have sleep problems like me, then yes this is for us. I’m genuinely interested, but i have to admit that i´m more interested in the medical part of this than in the entertainment one.
Hmm, kind of interesting. As of now, the only part of Wii Fit U I use is the Step counter thing-y!
Pedometer…:)
… Yeah.
I think it’s actually a device to send subliminal messages that will increase sales. I hope it comes with a Mario nightcap.
That’s a really good idea actually, think about how many people lose sleep or get extremely tired from playing video games for too long, this is perfect because it encourages a good balance between sleep and being active.
Well played Nintendo…
Am going to need this. i can’t handle the stress of beign kicked everytime by the nintenclowns
Wait, what? Coming on here is your idea, if your getting stressed, then see ya later. If your trolling, then see ya later, I’m going to ignore you now……
Well it’s not something super impressive but it sounds like something practical. I’d have to see a pricetag before I considered something like that.
At the right price, this could be extremely successful for teenagers, adults and the elderly(in a way).
Teenagers because it will help them stay focused at school and be able to take their exams properly.
Adults because then if they are tired at work, they can use this to help them get sufficient sleep to be able to do their job as well as possible.
Seriously? Well…..
Nintendo has been changing business a lot during its more than 100 year history. At a certain time they were even owners of sexy motels. LOL .
It´s kind of strange to see Nintendo investing in health related products, it reminds me of Konami, which also works with gym equipment and casino machines besides making videogames.
Maybe they´re preparing themselves for keeping the company alive when facing a future smaller videogame market, after all, overall consoles sales have been down since 2009 year-by-year
Health has been part of Nintendo since the Wii, but it’s weird seeing a physical product that attempts to help improve concentration…
Sega does Pachinko slot machines too, which ironically makes more money than most games that they release these days.
Funnily enough, this seems like something I could really find a use for. Still, I think this QOL thing is going to be a failure for Nintendo. We’ll see.
I thought we were supposed to avoid microwaves… is this safe?
My thoughts exactly.
My thoughts exactly, but I’m pretty sure they mean micro waves and not the radiation that microwaves give off. Otherwise Nintendo can be easily sued as microwave’s radiation (waves) kill off brain cells.
What the hell is this? Never heard of it.
It’s a device that Nintendo is developing to branch out into a healthy market. It’s pretty expected from a business to find ways to gain the hearts of another group than just gamers (Like how Sony does a wide variety of electronics).
Looks like a good product. Not a very relevant product to Nintendo’s market, but Sony’s known for their electronics outside of games and Microsoft is known for their computers outside of the gaming world. I don’t see why Nintendo couldn’t spare a niche of health equipment outside of games. I approve.
I expected something like this…
Now use these devices to observe the Xbot scum…
Oh god. This reminds me too much of Xbox DOne’s Kinect/NSA spying while you sleep. For the love of God Nintendo, don’t even. X(
Indeed, thankfully, unlike the Xbots, I won’t buy any of these things…
You can buy an X1 without Kinect.

Now you’re sleeping with power!
This kind of piques my interest. Looking forward to hear more.

2016? (- _ #)
Let me guess………………Dr. Mario is the one who invented this isn’t he?
It’s cool that Nintendo is branching out into a new market, because Sony and Microsoft both have other divisions.
If Nintendo does well in the QOL market, and it sounds like they believe this might be the case, than Nintendo will have increased revenue as a company and will grow even bigger in scale.
Sounds good to me!
Inb4 they go in the theme park business in 2035.

What pointless technology
People said the same thing about computers.
So collecting private photos, video, and other personal info through the 3DSes isn’t enough anymore, now they want people to buy something to monitor and record them to their servers 24/7.
