We’ve been waiting since launch for Nintendo TVii here in the UK and the rest of Europe. The service was meant to come at launch and did eventually come to the United States, where it was generally well received. However, Nintendo Europe has confirmed that it has cancelled plans for the service in Europe stating that it is, “Due to the extremely complex nature of localising multiple television services across a diverse range of countries with varied licensing systems.” So that’s it. Nintendo TVii has been cancelled for Europe. Here’s what they had to say in a statement.
At Nintendo of Europe, we continue to challenge ourselves to develop a range of entertaining experiences for all to enjoy. Due to the extremely complex nature of localising multiple television services across a diverse range of countries with varied licensing systems, regrettably we have taken the decision not to launch the Nintendo TVii service within the European region. Although on this occasion we did not anticipate such challenges, we will always strive to develop a range of entertaining experiences for all our users to enjoy.
With this in mind, Nintendo of Europe has launched the Nintendo Anime Channel, a new video-on-demand service on Nintendo 3DS which offers users the chance to stream anime series from the likes of Pokémon, Kirby, and Inazuma Eleven. New content will be added regularly and access to this service is granted simply by downloading a free application from Nintendo eShop.

They had one job. They could have easily negotiated a deal with the SES/Astra carriers (including BSkyB) to allow for regional programming across all the EU states. What the hell were they thinking?
It’s not necessarily a deal-breaker, but once again Europe gets shafted on something that both Japan and America have no issues with. It’s absolutely ludicrous.
Dam it, all I wanted was one chance to experience it… *sigh* Now Americans can stop complaining that we in Europe are loved by Nintendo do compared to America.
TVii isn’t even that great.
What Xbox did was much better, I hope they extend this in their next system, it would be nice use Nintendo TV to watch TV off TV on the gamepad, while a game from another system is on the TV, or… someone else is using the TV to watch something different…. or what ever
It’s nothing more than a pointless gimp. Cable and gaming don’t mix and this Wii U TVii is evidence of that.
Pfffttt. I don’t even use Nintendo TVii in the U.S. I would much rather get your preorder bonuses than the TV service.

It was fairly inevitable at this point really. Hopefully they update it to remove the useless icon at some point now

But honestly, TVii was one of those reasons I got really excited on the Wii U! It´s somehow sad to see that button on the Gamepad being completely useless. I hope they remove that with a system Update so that I don´t get reminded on that every time.
I want a free Wii U game for this irrelevant inconvenience…

It’s a lot better now. It wasn’t working for a long time. You had to try like 20 times before it worked. Now first try works.

Never really used it, even before I dropped cable and satellite. I’m all Netflix now. If Netflix would just improve the damn Netflix app for Wii U, I would sell my Apple TV right away and I would never have to change inputs on my TV again.

I knew it was going to happen! I knew right from about a whole year ago that Nintendo TVii was going to be cancelled for Europe. Why? Because the huge cable and satellite corporations have huge licensing restrictions for the channels (especially in Europe AND Australia). And guess what happened? They all refused to allow Nintendo to broadcast their channels, that’s the main reason why it was cancelled.
Now the next thing that will be coming up… will be the update for Wii U in which removes “Nintendo TVii” from the Home Menu and Wii U Menu COMPLETELY. And it WILL happen!
It’s practically useless and it’s also a fail on Xbox One like Kinect.

no really surprised to be honest, I always knew it would not be launch in Europe. The explaination is logic and it’s not Nintendo fault’s to be honest (well they should have think about it before launching the console). However nintendo should come up with a very good alternative and not let their European’s customer without any option. And if that option could be exclusive for Europe and Australia (who by all account is becoming an European country) only that would be fair and in line with Nintendo policy which is delivering content per region (hence the region lock thing).
The app was very useful back when posts on the app would appear on Miiverse, but once they removed that feature, it became a useless app as you might as well just post on the TVii community instead. With that said, I hope Europe at least gets the community if they don’t have it already. Oh & Nintendo of Europe better be releasing an update that removes the TVii button because it’s a slap in the face to see something on your console but can’t use it because the app isn’t even functional yet.
