Iwata Still Believes That One Piece Of Software Could Turn Around Their Fortunes

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata still firmly believes they can turn around the fortunes of the Wii U with a single piece of software. Iwata points towards Pokemon on the Game Boy as a prime example of this and says that while they’re struggling with the console at the moment something like this could well happen again. Do you think a single piece of software could change the Wii U’s fortunes?

On another front, we have witnessed one single software title completely change the entire picture of our business many times. I believe one of the most impressive stories was the time when people thought the Game Boy platform was virtually over. However, a software title called “Pokémon” turned things around for the platform and ended up creating the biggest annual sales for Game Boy in the latter half of the platform’s eventual lifecycle. Therefore, we do not believe that the situation so far means that there will not be a bright future. However, we should learn from our experiences of not being able to perfectly respond to certain social changes such as changes in the way consumers collect and receive information.

      1. Lol.

In 2012, Wii U’s system seller was Nintendo Land

In 2013, Wii U’s system seller was Mario 3D World

In 2014, Wii U’s system seller was MK8/Smash Bros

In 2015, Wii U system seller is Zelda

          1. As much as everyone hates to disagree this is true. I as well own all consoles, and almost every game I own was also on last gen, wii u on the other hand….

          2. XD That is so damn true that many fools still damage control their wasted purchases on last gen ported games that ends up a white lie of disappointments and con arts plus buying a PC-knockoff box just to have yet another graphic power pissing contest with each other and not be concerned about the games being fun and properly built for value.

        1. Sure, those games are system sellers, but this specifically is in the likelihood
of a NEW GAME built from the ground up for the Wii U console that turns out
to be a word-of-mouth type of title like a Brain Age or Ninendogs that could reinvigorate the mainstream’s interest in the console.
Not necessarily an existing franchise, but a NEW EXPERIENCE all together
that turns out to be a sleeper hit so to speak.
Splatoon is even in that category, and Splatoon will be up first,
but another game in that same vein or beyond that vein could come at anytime
          during the Wii U’s life.

          Here’s an example:

Amiibo are insanely popular right now.
          They have already sold MILLIONS.
          They are selling out everywhere.

Do you think Nintendo is not gearing up for that?
To take advantage of what is essentially a second-install base?

What I mean by that is there are plenty of people who don’t currently
own a Wii U but are buying into amiibo just for the collection aspect of them.

So if Nintendo is in the process of developing a big amiibo-based game
that will take advantage of every single figure to date from every wave, etc..
that these people already own, that could be a NEW WAY in for them,
coupled w/ whatever else is in store like ZELDA, like XENOBLADE,
like a NEW METROID, on top of the amazing exclusives that are already
readily available on the console. < They just have to make all of this
          combustible and increase their marketing.

So Nintendo are going to sell all of these amiibo and then introduced a game
that takes advantage of them in a huge way.

They are gearing up for that right now by selling all of them first and
increasing what is essentially a second-install base.
This second install-base of amiibo owners would be what their NEW AMIIBO GAME would be aimed at because by the time this game releases, the amount
of amiibo sold worldwide will likely be more than the current Wii U install base
of 9.2 million or whatever it currently is.
^ Amiibo is going to trump that number and just keep going…
          See what I'm saying?

So what it comes down to, is that Nintendo has plenty of options left when
it comes to the extent of their IP.

They just have to hopefully and currently be making the right moves behind closed doors in software development for their Wii U console and really
catch us off guard come e3.

Another example would be A Super Mario Galaxy 3, which in my
          opinion, would be sure bet.

You want to talk system sellers, but I feel at this point a Super Mario Galaxy 3
could turn out to be more of a heavy hitter than even a Kart or Smash
if it was to ever be announced for the Wii U.

It makes so much sense that it is ridiculous and could strike in a big way.
Even w/ former Wii owners who have yet to buy into the Wii U but solely remember the first two games on that console.
There is plenty of them out there

The craving for a new Metroid is undeniable.

          Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem.

          Yoshi's Woolly World

          Mario Maker

          Mighty No. 9

          Devil's Third

Project Cars, Treasure, Guard, and Robot.

          Starfox

          Zelda

          Xenoblade

          Fast Racing Neo

^ (just what we know about and have coming)

          But there is ammunition everywhere.
          Exclusive ammunition.

So whether Iwata believes just 1 new game could still do the trick,
which I believe it could as well, just look at all of that ^^^

Third-party multiplats or not, there's plenty of fun to be had on the
Wii U and plenty more to come…

          1. who is this? XD I like this guy he makes sense. My only fear though with holding out for an amiibo based game is the plain and simple fact that most no brainer Ideas elude Nintendo, sometimes that leads to amazing things you wouldn’t think to do, but most of the time they get in their own way.

          2. I can understand where you coming from and it’s a rational thought process you have. But Nintendo at the minute does not capitalise on the Amiibo success. Their 3D printers does not work at full speed and they play the collector games rather than high volume production. So I guess you can kiss a good bye to the every Amiibo game. Saying that Nintendo should increase the capacity of the amiibo (1 GB data), increase the production of existing amiibo, stop playing the collector game and propose the card version of characters (cheaper price)

There is a demand for some games but Super Mario galaxy 3 will not sell more than Smash or kart. There is too much Mario series and spin off for this console. The game pad needs to be used more often and in a more efficient, imaginative way.

You are right that lot of games can sell the system but a good and cheap way for Nintendo to sell is to make RPG and JRPG. Countries (I know) like France, Spain, Germany and even UK will go for these types of games. A good Pokemon games needs to be on the wii U and interact with games like X and Y, omega and other 3DS pokemon games.

You may not like it but a good DBZ or animes games will be more than welcome.

Nintendo should be hard and make some 3rd party deal with Capcom and ask for Monster hunter 4 G to be on the Wii as well as resident evil resurrection 1 and 2.

PES can also be a good deal to make with Konami.

In short the problem are multiple so are the solutions.

          3. A lot of people would probably buy an amiibo game, but the numbers you are writing down aren’t that simple. Many people bought multiple amiibos, but they will only buy the amiibo game once. I think some sort of WiiU exclusive MMO (may have even amiibo support) would be the most promising genre atm.

        2. If Dumb Iwata listed about people complaining of NSMBU and Nintendo Land Lacking online then they should have listened and delayed 3D World to add online. That’s why their online isn’t as good as Sony’s because they just put online on MK8 and Smash. How the hell is Nintendo supposed to gain better online when they just put that feature on the same two franchises?

    1. Sure, ZELDA is and will be a system seller, but this specifically
is in the likelihood of a NEW GAME built from the ground
up for the Wii U console that turns out to be a word-of-mouth
type of title like a Brain Age or Ninendogs that could
reinvigorate the mainstream’s interest in the console
and really catch on. That’s exactly what Nintendo needs.
Not necessarily an existing franchise, but a NEW EXPERIENCE
all together that turns out to be a sleeper hit so to speak.
Splatoon is in that very category, and Splatoon will be
up first, but another game in that same vein or beyond that

ahead of the game by selling all of the figures they can first and

You see what I am saying?

  1. If you’re looking for the next Pokemon, It’s got to be something new that you can’t get anywhere else, especially not on your other, more successful system.

Time to step up to the plate, Inklings. Splatoon may be what Nintendo was looking for.

    1. Splatoon isn’t it. Why Pokemon was successful was because of a few reasons… 1: It was interesting and fresh. 2: It was easy to get ahold of the game, as the system it was on was cheap. 3: It was addictive. 4: It was so popular among kids at that time, that some kids practically marketed the game by bringing it to school and showing their friends their cool, new game. There’s other reasons, but Splatoon just doesn’t have those. Sure it’s interesting and fresh (perhaps addictive) but you can’t get a Pokemon game to sell as well as it did before, because most kids are too busy playing their “cool” games. (Most kids who play games these days either play games like COD or play mobile games. They don’t want to buy dedicated hardware to play their games.)

    1. Sure Galaxy sold and is the highest sold 3D mario game compared to 64, sunshine, and galaxy 2, but galaxy 2 didn’t have the same success as the first and sold less than 64. Another Full blown Mario game won’t sell greatly unless they add a lot to it that we’ve never seen before like muliplayer/co-op, different and longer storyline. Mario has so much they can do but keeps failing and doing the same thing with him.

    2. Galaxy 3 wont ever happen, each console gets its OWN STYLE MARIO GAME. 3D World is the Wii U is the main Mario game for Wii U, Galaxy was for the Wii and Wii only. Miyamoto said himself the next Mario game will be waiting for us on the next console. No more Mario on Wii U. (Main Mario game I mean) Which is good, cause everyone is sick of Mario and he needs a few years off so he can come back with something special and new again.

    1. Seeing as Iwata said before there are still a lot of unannounced Wii U titles and I doub’t there are that many more NEW IP’S, that would mean they are franchises we already know like Metroid, Animal Crossing, and Pokemon. The Pokémon will probably be Pokémon Coliseum U or something.

  2. Agreed with the first guy. Zelda has that step. It is known, and people love it. It was a reason people jumped to the wii because Twilight Princess was a console release title. MM3D sold greatly, Wind waker HD with the small userbase did. Zelda sells and with this new artstyle that i haven’t seen anyone really complain about and the massive open world, that’s a plus for new, current, and old (who’ve abandoned Nintendo) comers alike.

  3. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

    *Cybernetic Facepalm*

My Lord, you can have the best game ever created, it won’t sell much if you don’t promote it all the time!

    1. *salutes*

But commander, could a change in how the receive and give consumers information that Iwata was talking about be the linchpin to the entire quandary? Should they create better games and become more effective in how they promote themselves and how their promotions are presented, would that not be a step in the right direction?

      1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

They should have learned the mistakes of the 3DS as soon as the Wii U was closing in its release but yet we got the same results, if not worse by sales…

I think High Command should realise that about 50% of their people are above 18 and must not be alienated by their sometimes obsessive control over everything…

I mean, what’s the point in having parental controls if you are just going to remove a feature all together because of a few imbeciles?…

The Youtube thing I only agree with the full gameplay videos that shows everything from start to finish, otherwise I think people should be allowed to make videos showing a bit here and there as they want…

Earning money is another deal and I don’t care one way or the other even if I think that the cattle masses making money out of others’ work are just lazy sheep…

        1. I see.. I would argue that there were obligations to support the Wii U that were broken, or that the announcement of competitor consoles truncated the Wii U’s initial steam, however as you say at least one of those should have been planned for and were it the Wii u’s initial interests would not have waned so much.

While I do understand the important of the older 18 portion of the Empire’s demographic, I feel as though the temperament of the masses should not always be catered to. They are too unstable and lack focus in priorities. Many even feel the gaming world revolves completely around their age group which is preposterous. If the masses continue to ask for unimportant trinkets to gaming for ego’s sake, then the quality of the products may suffer.

          1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Lord Miyamoto is already tired of the cattle masses and has promised to not focus on them anymore in the future…

He said that gaming is for real gamers and not civilian waste so I think we can look forward to an improvement in the coming future…

            1. Truly?! Well this is excellent news indeed! While I am for the Empire recruiting more gamers, the current stock is… lacking.

              1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Indeed, compared to the elite gamers of the Ancient Times, these current so called “Elite Gamers” are a joke…

                  1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Lord Shibata as he knows more about the western cattle masses than both Lord Iwata and Lord Reggienator…

And if I was the Supreme Lord Commander of the Empire, the marketing would have a new meaning…

  4. It’s great that in 2015 they’re still saying that… Maybe they’ll say it again next year, just like the year before that, and the year before that, and the year before that.

  5. yes i believe it but in this market im not so sure every1 is so brainwashed by the playstation and xbox. then when nintendo does release a great game that every1 wants to play they all hit the message bordes to talk shit out of jealousy. personally im enjoying my wii u way more they games are super stong on gameplay not boring 60$ movies like on every other system. u know what the problem is? nintendo dont have mass micro tansactions, yearly network cost, endless amounts of dlc that cost tons of money. if they want to attract gamers from the competitors they need to start to offer that cuz its what those gamers thrive on they are useto draining their bank accounts on a single game to get everything that comes out for it :) i have owned only sony and nintendo for life and right now nintendo is offering more to me than sony my 3ds and wii u see way more use then ps3 and ps4 and lets not get into the sick joke known as the vita.

      1. 1 game out of the dozens on playstation so nice try. they dont abuse it and besides i play pokemon shuffle and it was created to be a game u play in spurts to enjoy. i couldnt sit there and play it for hours at a time it would be boring. but when u make games the gt6 that has microtransactions and advertisements ingame thats just dumb. glad i only rented that 1 wasnt nearly as good as gt5

          1. yes but the thing u didnt mention is its free for every1. other companies have many games u must buy the game. then 1.99 to 2.99 per outfit, 9.99 to 14.99 per add-on plus any microtarnsactions they decide on. ive been playing hyrule warriors where i bought everything that comes out 7.99 buys like 20 hours extra gameplay and extra outfits within the dlc. so even when nintendo does decide on some dlc they atleast do it right and dont abuse it. im not anti dlc i just dont like when its abused then people defending the abusers like its ok for them to release a paid dem for 40$ then chage an addition 100$ worth of dlc to have the full game.

      2. It is also a freemium. Unlike some other games on competitors platforms, where you must pay to 120$ to get the full game, and even then they add the microtransactions everywhere.

  6. And that piece of software will never be coming from their extremely predictable and unambitious line-up.

This tool needs to fucking resign already.

  7. Keep the games coming, you already have some great games. Bring back some untouched franchises (is anyone really doing anything like F-Zero right now? How about a new one of those with online play and a story mode?) and give the people what they want (a new Metroid Prime game. Just do it Nintendo). After all that advertise THE HELL out of your system! Why wasn’t there a funny, informative super bowl commercial on this year? As an example Marshawn Lynch says he likes Mario Kart, call him and see if you can add him to your 2015 advertising plan…and that’s just off the top of my head.

Get your business practices together Nintendo, for real. You can doooo it!!!!!

  8. NOTHING will save the Wii U!!
Hilarious how people think Zelda will when the last Zelda on the Wii ONLY sold 4 million on a 105 Million selling console!
Zelda has NEVER been a system seller for Nintendo, it has ALWAYS been Mario, Mario Kart, Star Fox.
The fact that after 3 years Iwata still thinks that a single game can save the Wii U is hilarious and proves just how much the guy has lost the plot!
From Reggie bragged the U will not have game droughts to this prove Nintendo are going crazy!
PS4 has already won this generation after its amazing 18 Million in over a year in worldwide sales.
The fact that Nintendo think they can keep up with the PS4 is laughable!
Nintendo had their year start and they blew it big time, the Gamepad has been an epic fail and even 3 years later Nintendo still does not know what to do with it!
The Wii U has ended all major 3rd party relations with Nintendo, and like Patcher said even if Nintendo;s next home console is a powerhouse and is easier to develop for 3rd party will still stay away as they now only make games on consoles with huge install bases!
Nintendo should stick to handhelds what they have always been kings of, the New Nintendo 3ds xl has again been a massive worldwide hit for Nintendo.
When the QOL is an epic flop Nintendo should then move away from home consoles and stick to handhelds!

        1. His comment about Star Fox doesn’t negate the validity of his other points regarding how much Nintendo has fucked up.

    1. Nintendo Elite Commander Quadraxis

Except nowhere did they even mention about comparing themselves to graphicwhores, get lost Sonyan and play your movies…

      1. Generalizing PS4 games as being overly cinematic is no different than someone generalizing Nintendo for being a kiddie console. Both assumptions are wrong. Don’t be a dick.

        1. Well kiddie is a term used to negatively over skew Nintendo’s games as something a grown adult should be too embarrassed to play. It is a term used to keep new comers from looking into the console via peer pressure and to move fans of the console away from the console by the same means.

PS4 games being overly cinematic? Well one would have to look at the PS4 specific games to make that claim. While I cannot speak on the PS4, Sony games in general (at least how the identify themselves and what they attach their brand to) are very heavy on the cut scenes, sometimes to the detriment of game play. Metal Gear Solid 1-4, Uncharted loves it’s cut scenes, Heavy Rain, and such are mostly noted for their cinematic feel first and game play second. Not saying that the game play isn’t good in most of these game I mentioned, but it’s the look of the games Sony themselves promote the most. And, by the look of everything said about The Order 1886, the focus for them seems to be the same.

The PS4 being without any games I deem necessary for life like the PS3’s MGS4, and the fact that MGS V and likely FFXV and KH3 coming to PC, I not only have no interest in finding out if the PS4 is indeed a cinematic focus machine, I do not care. The sad fact is whatever they are, they are lacking quality games overall.

  9. The Game Boy is a poor comparison because there wasn’t much competition. The PS4 and Xbox One are dominant with a great selection of games. I still prefer the Wii U, but it will not be fixed with a single piece of software. The name and poor 3rd party support are the culprits.

  10. Games still do come around and change the entire landscape. Minecraft was the last such game. It will happen again, it’s just a case of who is going to make the game that does it. It almost certainly won’t be a sequel – it will be a new IP.

  11. You can’t always base your current and future actions on what you did in the past – there needs to be context and certain situations are different. Pokemon is a cultural phenomenon and you don’t see that happen often. While it was able to “save the Game Boy”, you also need to consider that Pokemon is different than other properties, and that you also need other games to continue to carry that momentum. Pokemon was just the match to re-heat the fire.
In general, it’s not a good idea to base your company’s future success on one property, let alone ONE GAME.
Zelda won’t save the console unless it completely and utterly exceeds expectations. If we get an open-world Zelda game that is Zelda-quality, it’ll be good, but it won’t be something that turns things around for the system. You know what one game WILL save the Wii U? A Pokemon MMO – but they’ll never do it because they want to keep it portable.

  12. What Nintendo needs is another Miyamoto. I love the one the original, but he’s not inventing games like he used to. This man created Pilot Wings, Mario Bros., F-Zero, Zelda, and many more. Nintendo needs a modern day Miyamoto to churn out new I.P’s. Sometimes I do think Nintendo depends on all their olde franchises sometimes.

Or you know, maybe a Pokemon MMO on the Wii U… Thats the only single game I could think of that would change the Wii U’s fate..

    1. Well, we got the guys who are making Splatoon! That game looks original, fun and creative. Perhaps one of those guys (or a couple of them) have some other interesting ideas up their sleeves. I mean, Splatoon was their “test project” and it is pretty fantastic looking.

Imagine what they could do when they aren’t doing a test run under Miyamoto’s wing!

      1. I agree, Splatoon is amazing. And so are the guys behind it. But they need to pick the pace up some. One new I.P. every two years is not enough. They need two or three new I.P.’s right now.. or in the near future..

But I am excited to see what the team behind Splatoon has next.

    1. If they ever released a Pokemon RPG on a home console…. the world would explode. Consoles would sell like MAD and so would the game!

  13. Well, yeah. If Nintendo scored the exclusivity rights to the next all new Megaman game, or the next all new GTA game or Elder Scrolls or something along those lines.

Zelda will be big, but I don’t think it will all of a sudden turn the Wii U into a serious competitor against the Xbox One and PS4.

Regardless, the Wii U is successful enough. Amiibos are really successful and we, the Nintendo gamers, have benefited greatly from this generation. We have received some of the BEST games in Nintendo’s history in these last couple of years due to Nintendo working extra hard to make better quality games to turn their fortunes around: Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Smash Bros 4, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Wind Waker REMAKE. Plus we have some incredible games on the way: Xenoblade X, Zelda U, Fire Emblem x Shin Megami, Yoshi’s Woolly World, Star Fox and I’m sure Metroid is coming and quite possibly an F-Zero.

*Just a thought* You know what would be cool is a new Mario Strikers or Mario Power Tennis on the Wii U. Haven’t played a Mario Sports game in a while and I have no interest playing them on my 3DS.*

  14. I don’t think so… certainly not in terms of “catching up to the competition”

But I honestly don’t really care, so long as they keep releasing quality software.

  15. actually! i think differently! the big 1 software is not going to save them this time! however!!!!!
the continuation of great games coming out for the wii u will help it reach the tipping point!.. it’s like you pour and pour water in a glass… sooner or later it will spill over…… and if you’re lucky the dam will break (the glass) if they keep pumping out great games,,,, they will be fine even tho they do not get as many console sales as they would have initially wanted….

    1. i mean… have you seen the responses these days to the “next gen” games ? too short.. too much water.. not enough this and that! and then at the end of it all nintendo will only have good games…

  16. so if Iwata believes that then why did he bot fight to get Luigi’s Mansion 2 on Wii U when the game was in R&D? AND WHY DIDN’T HE DO NOTHING ABOUT pulling poken fighters from arcade to Wii U? IWATA IS STUPID.

  17. I dont understand why Pokemon on Handhelds do so well and yet Nintendo doesnt cross it over to consoles with the exact same gameplay. No i dont want to take pictures of pokemon and i dont want to have a battle stadium either.

i want a RPG a true RPG on Console.

  18. Zelda may move some systems, but I doubt very highly on any one game “saving” the Wii U. I personally don’t see it happening. Games like Splatoon will sell due it being completely new and different. One game to turn things around, I’m thinking more like a strong few.

  19. Sure, if they release a full blown Pokemon MMO on Wii U with Amiibo NFC tech. Yes, but that would be too easy. Right, Nintendo?

  20. Pingback: The Amiibo-based Game!

  21. But let’s face it, if Mk8 and Smash did not do the trick, Zelda U will not do it and Splatoon is far from been the next Pokemon.

  22. I dont see the Wii U taking over the XB1 sales, let alone PS4, but i still prefer this console to any of the two because im looking forward to almost all the games coming out for it.

At the end of the day im just a consumer after all.

  23. An Amiibo RPG is what it would take.
Also, Amiibo availability needs to be fixed first.
Maybe a small $20-50 price drop on Wii U too.
Then Wii U would sell units like XBO.
Also more M rated and T rated titles on the system… it couldn’t hurt to
just keep pumping out the games like Bayo, Devil’s Third, Hyrule Warriors.

    1. CONTD-
More RPG’s too, like Xenoblade X on Wii U.
And stop over-relying on shoehorning in Mario, just like they did with Splatoon.
Original IP is very welcome these days.
Big sequels such as Bayonetta 3, Diddy Kong Racing 2 and another Metroid would help too, just like Star Fox and Zelda should help a bit.

  24. The return of Starfox could be the title to help Wii U out. A lot of people were waiting to get a Wii U until games like Metroid, F-Zero or Starfox would show up, 9 long years have past and Starfox has come home.

  25. Lets take it back the famicom aka the family computer.

Gta still isnt on the pc
    Ubi and pc? Hahaa joke

    People steal games on pc

Valve and star craft league of legends and indie run pc

    Drm is shit

Windows 10 is the end of xb1

Ps to go streaming with a lil box hooked up to a monitor

The future is steam boxes and whatever nintendo wants.

  26. Okay so what is Iwata thinking then? We already have had Super Mario 3D World (which is the Wii U Mario game, Miyamoto said the next one would be on the next system), Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros. All those games were supposed to be system sellers and both Playstation 4 and Xbox One have outsold the Wii U even with the Wii U having a headstart and the highest scoring games of the both respective rival systems are remakes of last gen games. Last gen games are kicking the crap out of fresh first-party Nintendo games. So what on Earth does Iwata have up his sleeve that could change the fortune of Wii U? Sure there is the new Zelda game coming out but Zelda games typically sell less than Mario games and Mario didn’t help the Wii U compete with PS4 and Xbox One. The only way I can see the Wii U’s fortune turning around is if Nintendo really busts their balls in terms of giving up their wallet and purchases third party games like Fallout 4, GTA VI, and Mass Effect 4 as exclusives. Then people would have to pick up a Wii U in order to play those games. It’s really unrealistic that Nintendo would do that however especially with Western developers. The more likely case is getting Monster Hunter 5 as a Wii U exclusive along with Dragon Quest XI as a regular Dragon Quest game. This would definitely help with their sales in Japan. A great idea is to get Pokemon Company’s heads out of their asses and just make a full Pokemon game on Wii U that has a great online experience because that would really pump sales worldwide but it would be hard for them to convince Pokemon Company to do so. I see the Wii U being lucky if it manages to sell 20 million units worldwide for it’s life span. Nintendo better be really creative and competitive with it’s next console.

  27. people seem to be forgetting that there is one place where you can change the mind of any gamer and get them to commit to your system for future titles. E3 and it’s coming up
If they want to turn the system into a top seller they only have to announce one game, an amiibo based game. It’s a no brainer, the toys sell the game and the game sells the toys, and both can sell the system. they have almost sold as many amiibo as the entire wii u install base # in just 4 months! and If they can get their distribution and manufacturing problems taken care of, that # will continue to grow. it’s less than 4 months away guys, I really hope they’ve got something incredible up their sleeve by then

  28. They seriously need to stop relying on past success to be their only assurance for their future products. One good game is not going to save the Wii U.

This isn’t the 80’s and 90’s anymore either, you can’t expect the same things that worked in those time periods, to work now. Times change, people change and their interests change. You need to adapt to those changes. instead of assuming everything will just stay the same, and that you can just ride on the same success you did in the past years for the rest of your life.

No doubt the only reason QOL exists, is because Iwata assumes because of the popularity of Wii Fit on the Wii, everyone will eat it up. As usual though, he fails to pay attention to fact times have changed, and the Wii Fit brand is not anywhere near as successful as it used to be on the Wii U.

Timing is everything. A lot of these things that were extremely successful then, would never be as successful at a different time.

  29. Unfortunately for Nintendo, they don’t attempt to make games at the scale/ambition of GTA V, The Last of Us, or Skyrim so I don’t think they will get that breakthrough they are hoping for with core gamers.

So whatever it is, it would have to be something New like Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Wii Sports, Angry Birds, Tetris, and the like for younger / casual gaming market.

It can’t be a new release of any of their existing stuff, no matter how well they made these rehash games, it just doesn’t capture the imagination / attention of majority of the core gaming market.

    1. I don’t wish to sound fanboyish, but Last of us is a lazy re-skinned Uncharted with 90% resources put into voice acting and cinematics. On the other hand the Last Story for Wii is something I would call an ambitious game, and it shows. GTA also. Last of us – a safe game aimed for awards.

  30. That’s what people said about Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Wind Waker HD, Sm4sh, etc. Yet none of those were critical-mass system sellers. If not even Smash could do it, what will?

  31. Three games that would sell Wii U’s. 1- Amiibo Kingdom (a game based around all Amiibo. Imagine going into a Mario 64 area and using sonic or Kirby ) 2- Pokemon U with all new Pokemon Amiibo ( now you have physical Pokemon to send into battle ) 3- Project S.H.O.O.T.E.R ( A realistic shooter with the Nintendo magic. Give us that gun peripheral to put the gamepad in. So someone’s shooting behind me, when I look around the guy is behind me in real time, BOOM! TAKE OUR MONEY!

  32. I agree with Iwata, but I don’t think it applies to Wii U. Not in the same scale anyway. Hopefully Nintendo will have some major things, and a price cut, planned for next holiday season, that will be the time when secondary consoles start getting bought.
