A respected analyst over at research firm IHS has weighed in on Nintendo’s decision to partner up and acquire DeNA to bring video games based on its iconic IP’s to smart devices. Piers Harding-Rolls says that it’s an interesting move as neither companies are currently leaders in their respective fields anymore. However, he believes it is a positive move for the company, but he wonders how the games will be monetized. It will either be a flat rate fee for the game or free games with in-app purchases like so many of the games today on iOS and Android and Windows phones.
“Nintendo’s decision to partner with DeNA is a recognition of the importance of the games app audience to the future of its business.”
“The Nintendo-DeNA alliance is a good fit and offers up a number of important synergies for two companies that are no longer leaders in their respective segments.”
“The main challenge will be knitting together the cultures of both companies and aligning the speed of development and iteration that is needed in the mobile space with Nintendo’s more patient and systematic approach to games content production.”
“How the new games are monetised may also provide a challenge considering the general differences in models used in retail for Nintendo and through in-app purchases for DeNA.”
– Piers Harding-Rolls, head of games research at analysts IHS.

Nintendo is approaching mobile from the wrong angle, it won’t work as they want and they’ll be frustrated
Says the guy who never presents any facts to support his claims.
I guess you’re just role playing here, my friend.
How exactly? You just went out and said something without actually explaining it…
Why would I?
Just so people know, they’ll be original titles. Don’t expect anything good from the past.
That’s the point. Someone may play a Zelda style Infinity Blade game on their tablet, see an advertisement or clip from various “real” Zelda titles, and find out that they can only be played on a Nintendo console of some sort, and that is the catalyst that makes them buy a Wii U or 3DS, and then they download Link to the Past or Ocarina of Time or pick up Wind Waker etc. If they could play Link to the Past on the tablet, they wouldn’t buy the Nintendo hardware, because there would be no need anymore, and that’s what they are trying to avoid. It’s smart.
Someone with sense!!!
What is this sorcery!!!1!1??77
I just hope they’re not free to play games like Pokémon Shuffle. They’ll never get my money that way.
I think games like Pokemon Shuffle are better for the app market. A kid can download 100s of apps for free, so why would he pay for Nintendo’s games? I feel Pokemon Shuffle’s free to play style is good, because you never have to spend money to play the game. Freebies are aslo given out frequently, and there are always new events. And although I admit I hate that you can only have 5 hearts at a time, it keeps people playing more frequietnly. Or Nintendo could do what some companies do and allow you to try out a game before buying it fully. Either way any three of these ways could work, but charging a flat fee at the start won’t get anyone to buy your games.
They should make a game like The Simpsons Tapped Out, could be cool lol
only thing we can do is wait and see
I’m glad to see Nintendo is wading into this lucrative market. I think it will help mobile gaming as much as it does Nintendo’s wallet. A “more patient and systematic approach to games content production” (as cited in the article above) is exactly what the iOS crowd needs right now. We have more potential gamers out there than ever before and most of them aren’t being reigned into big-budget series – despite the fact that they spend hours devoted to playing cheap imitations of said genres.
I could see a Mario sidescrollwe where he runs automatically and all you have to do is jump being really fun
This is all bad news for everyone. Nintendos image and identity has nothing to do with this desperate move which is the result of pressure from investors who know nothing about Nintendo. Mario does not belong in some freaking phone, you don’t go and throw Mario on a cheap phone you have to go and knock on Marios door to play, that’s how he rolls. This is all cheap cash grab and self respect. I hate it.
Correction no selfrespect*
well I think it’s a bad news a very bad one. My hope is that nintendo put the retro game (from nes to N64) on the smartphone so they can make money with IP. I also wish they put some “Trial IP” so that if the game is successful they can develop the game for home console. This news mean that the investors put a lot of pressure on Iwata. Very sad day and it’s time to get all the most exciting Game cube, Wii (if not already) and Wii U games cause with that and the QoL I feel the end of home console and dedicated portable console for nintendo.
Well said, and don’t expect any backwards compatibility with the NX, theyes are going to sell you all games like wind weaker from now on.
Everybody better go and buy a wii u, it will be the last Nintendo console with BC.
that nexus looks sexy as hell
