Super sleuth Tamaki is at it again and this time he has unearthed some information regarding the canceled Super Mario Spikers by Next Level Games. The game was presented to Nintendo along with an early playable prototype for the company to play through. It was a hybrid of both volleyball and wrestling but with more of an emphasis on the wrestling part. However, it turns out that Nintendo weren’t at all keen on the level of violence that was depicted in the game. One of the examples is that the characters could hit downed opponents in the wrestling segments which Nintendo apparently described as “dishonourable”. Therefore the game sadly never saw the light of day.

This has already been explained by Nintendo. The premise of SMB is that the characters are actually toys therefore the violence is justified unlike an actual Mario taking hits for mere sake of sports.

It’s a shame though that they didn’t even try to make a new IP rather than give up after being told they can’t use Mario for this concept.

The violence is very un-Mario, so I can understand that. The violence seen in Smash Bros. is a little more cartoony and slapstick based. Even that being said, just how are wrestling moves supposed to be incorporated into volleyball? Rugby sure, ut I can’t wrap my headround how that works. That’s an ambitious, yet poorly though-out concept from Next Level.
Nintendo has great properties and they make great games, they also have others work on their properties and they make great games as well. This backroom stuff is wicked interesting — it’s great to hear that there are developers who are pushing Nintendo outside of their comfort zone, even if it always doesn’t work out.
