The internet is abuzz with positive news for the Big N following their seeming release of Nintendo NX software development kits. However, NintendoForums has recently spoken with major game publishing company based in the U.S. and it looks like the Nintendo NX will be outpacing both the PS4 and Xbox One. According to the unnamed publishing company:
[O]ne software demo included with the kit crunches so many polygons that it’s currently impossible to run at 60fps using a current-generation Intel (we’re assuming a Core i7 Skylake) CPU and a nearly top-of-the-line graphics card…
This change, if brought to the final build, would be a major departure for Nintendo who has previously focused on less-powered technology in their hardware than their competition. Given how analysts are predicting a Holiday 2016 release, NintendoForum makes the conclusion that Nintendo is working with an established chip giant to create a proprietary and specialized CPU and GPU to outperform what is currently on the market.

To each their own, I love my Alienware and Wii U but probably pick up my PS4 more often — it isn’t a powerhouse by normal gaming specs, but it is a nice sacrifice for being able to pick up and play.

It’s not really a shot at them, but they really are weak, the PS4 might be the strongest home console but its far from powerful. Both the PS4 and XBO were outdated before they even launched. It’s just the truth, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Clearly you must have a very shitty PC, because I have seen better graphics (at higher res + fps) over 3 years ago. The current gen (PS4/Xbone) was outdated by the PC long before anybody had a clue about them.
Things used to be different. New consoles used to push PC away for 1-2 years.
But because they are afraid of little kids crying about not beign able to afford a $600 console from their allowance money without getting a summer job for 2 weeks, Sony and microsoft build some $400 plastic trash. What do you expect for that money? Modern technology? Bwhahahaha!!!

Any console that costs 500 or 600 dollars should be shoved up a company’s arse! That’s a LOT of money, whether you have a job or not. I can’t even buy a PS4 until it has a MAJOR price drop. Which probably won’t be until the PS5 is released. It’s getting to where only the rich can afford to be video gamers.

Assassins creed unity ran at 900p and can’t manage solid 30fps.
Bloodborne had frame rate issues.
Solid 60 fps is extremely uncommon and games that shot for fancy visuals at 30fps rarely are hitting even a solid 30.
The cpu in the console has 1/4 the power of an Intel 3570k according to toms hardware, even with full cpu utilization.
The gpus are mobile chips with 1.84 and 1.33 teraflops, where’s the chips out at that time were the 290x which were 5.6 teraflops. A difference of less than half as powerful.
When the Xbox 360 came out only dual cores were out. The cpu was easily twice as powerful as any cpu I’m a desktop at the time. The console used a modified x 1800 chip, with equal power to the flagship x 1800 card at the time.
In comparison for its time, if you take these numbers, the gpus were 3 times more powerful last gen, and the CPUs were twice as powerful as the most powerful cpu rather than a quarter as powerful which is a difference of 8 times the performance for its time.
The CPUs in the Xbox 360 were tested from ubisoft and handled more processing than the current CPUs, by a tiny bit. We are talking a cpu released 7 years being slightly stronger than a new gen console.
Yes. These consoles are weak. It isn’t even debatable. It is basically a tablet cpu with a laptop grade gaming chip. Good for a laptop, bad for a console. Good for 30fps, or a lowered resolution at 60, running on roughly medium settings.
Or barely 30 fps on high. Not ultra. High. That is insulting.
We have torn frames, choppy frames, reduced visuals, clear sacrifices due to this gen’s lack of power.

Lol… it’s more complicated than that. Skylark has more l3 cache, a higher clock speed and is made with a smaller manufacturing process. Not to mention i7’s have hyperthreading so you can still get 8 logical cores. To top that off you can get an unlocked cpu and overclocking it further. Regardless, with any modern cpu it’s pretty hard to bottle neck yourself. While running an intel 5960x with 4 Titan x’s it was found that the Titan x’s were still the bottle neck.

You realize that the amount of cores has nothing to do with how powerful a processor is. Intel’s quad core processors can crush AMD 8 core processor.

Have you ever looked at an i7 cpu in gaming vs amd?
I’m talking even with mantle. It gets crushed even with 4.0 ghz amd 8 core chips vs a 3.4 ghz stock i5. Heck, the 9790 black edition at whar is it 5 ghz? That doesn’t even come close to an Intel 3570k 4 core stock.
You’re talking an amd clocked at 1.6ghz, even with 8 cores toms hardware says even with full core usage these CPUs are a quarter as powerful as an i5 3570k. An i7 is more powerful when threaded properly, and then you’re talking 3 generations ahead to the 6 model so skylake, with each one about 5% more powerful than the last.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. If the nx has a cpu like this In the console and even has an amd 290 cpu, which could be very affordable by now, it will churn out solid 60fps 1080p on every game.
The advantage here will be Xbox one and ps4 would basically be admitting Xbox one and ps4 are junk if they release an official 1080p console to compete.
Even better, tvs for 1280p aren’t a thing so they would have to do powerful enough to go 4k to trump nx, which won’t be possible single card for a looong time in any affordable way.
All Nintendo needs to do is make a console fully 1080p capable and they might win it. Developers will get back on board, and all things being 1080p I will take Nintendo any day. For example sky landers, those amiibos with equal graphics will get my buy if it happens every time. Same with Disney infinity, especially if they update that tablet controller for better use and more innovative features. Imagine the possibilities!
I am mad at all consoles personally, even wii u. I want them to pick up the slack so I hope this happens. I would go flying back to Nintendo even after my insults.

They both sport a cpu that is a serious bandwidth issue with a quarter the power of an Intel 3570k at full utilization as quoted by tom’s hardware.
Lookup the amd a 10 laptop with the amd cpu vs the Intel same laptop with the 7970. The ps4 uses that 7970 mobile gpu.
The cpu will more often than not be a huge bottleneck. Look at some benchmarks. This is why unity ran better on Xbox one. Both are going to peak fairly close together. Each game ps4 shot for a higher resolution after Xbox one solved the esram issues had frame rate issues. For example call of duty advanced warfare.
Now they are both garbage compared to last gen.

Then again, using different architecture yet again is terribly bad news for third-parties.

Well, we don’t know for sure what the development structure will be like. Hopefully they learned from PlayStation to get away from proprietary architecture and create something that will be easier for Devs to port.

Possibly — I don’t want to speak to something I don’t know. But the way I understand it, it means that they aren’t chips made on the market, but ones made especially for the system.
Like PS4’s CPU and GPU are both customized specifically for primarily running games and optimized for the system, yet they are able to run x86 standard.
Though someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

Nope, you’re correct, the CPU is just a modified version of an after market cpu, but it still runs with the x86 architecture, that’s why porting is easier between them (XBO and PS4)

This is all I’ve wanted to hear for so long.
It makes sense too! They said that the NX wasn’t going to “replace” the Wii U or N3DS so I’m guessing they’ll keep supporting those (though probably somewhat less) and have the the higher priced NX for the more dedicated community. Maybe it’ll even play Wii U games. Shit, maybe it’ll even play 3DS games! Who knows? :)

Powerhouse or not if they can’t shake off the kid-friendly operating system with little to no way to interact with other players online then it’s gonna be just as pointless for the core gamers as the Wii U. Nobody’s gonna go from PS4 or XB1 to something similar to the Wii U. Account based eShop instead of system, I don’t know who the dumbass at Nintendo is that said no to account based systems but I do hope they were fired from the NX project. They need to do a mass overhaul of the operating system or the console itself will be pointless. Being able to message a friend and say “Hey, can I come to your town?” in Animal Crossing or “Wanna race?” in Mario Kart would do WONDERS.

I may be wrong, but I believe they said that the Wii U would be the last iteration of the OS which has been largely the same since GameCube. I’m expecting, and hoping, for something new.

Who in their right mind honestly thinks it’s SMART for Nintendo to basically say “f*** off” to 10 million + Wii U owners by abandoning it early, so that they’ll be turned off of moving to the NX?
They aren’t going to do something that stupid just to satisfy a bunch of Wii U haters.
Pikmin 4 is already almost complete so that’s basically guaranteed to be a Wii U title, and Zelda is still due to hit it, and there are still PLENTY of Indie games that are due out next year for the Wii U.
That, on top of the fact that Nintendo has a CYCLE for their console development.
There’s 5 years between each one, and each console only releases the year FOLLOWING its official unveiling.
If you think the NX is going to release in 2017, you haven’t paid attention to Nintendo’s history or habits.
If the low sales of the gamecube didn’t scare Nintendo into abandoning IT early, then it sure as hell isn’t gonna happen this time, especially with two years left in its life.

#2 Nintendo doesn’t like mentioning games that are way too far out in advance.

Even though it was said Pikmin 4 is close to be finished, they never said anything about the platforms it’s coming to, if I’m not mistaken. For all we know, it might turn out to be a 3DS title. And as for indie titles, well, I really don’t think they mean all that much for the longevity of a console, especially if its own company happened to abandon it ahead of the indie developers.
And by mentioning #2, you kinda shot yourself in the foot, honestly.
Remember when Xenoblade was first announced? Yoshi’s Wooly World? Star Fox? Now, how long did it take from the first reveal to the launch of those games?
Or what about the new Zelda? It’s been more than a year, and we still don’t have it – hell, we don’t even know when it’s coming out.
This isn’t something that has started happening with the WiiU. Remember how long it took for Animal Crossing to come out on the 3DS after it was revealed? No? Well, it was first shown before the 3DS even launched, and it came out 2+ years after.
Skyward Sword was practically announced at E3 2009 and came out in November two years later.
So, you see, what I’m trying to say is, you’re really not doing yourself a favor by saying Nintendo “doesn’t like” mentioning games too early, because we all know they very well do. Even if all the other points you made had been right, just by saying that, you’re kinda losing your credibility anyway.

For Zelda, it’s been delayed; the original intention was to launch it this year, not next, so under original intent it wasn’t too early.
Same for Star Fox Zero.
As for Yoshi and Xenoblade X, those are both already out in Japan, so that’s not far over a year for either of those.
And as for animal crossing and Skyward Sword, I don’t remember whether or not they fall under the same “delay exception” that Star Fox and Zelda U have fallen under, but if not, then I guess there are exceptions.
My point is, it’s not Nintendo’s rule to announce most of their games when they’re significantly over a year away.
Exceptions to the rule don’t change the rule; if they did, then there wouldn’t be so many people frustrated over Nintendo staying silent about new projects for so long.
I mean, waiting until Pikmin 4 is almost complete before even mentioning it? And we still don’t have a release date for it yet; just a mention that it’s almost done, which is basically the same thing as saying “not officially announced for any specific date”, therefore the rule applies until we’ve got one to go off of.

The games getting delayed doesn’t change anything about them having been announced too early, it’s actually more evidence proving just that.
Yoshi’s Wooly World and Xenoblade X being out in Japan also doesn’t change the fact that both were first shown in January 2013, more than 2 years before their release.
And no, neither Animal Crossing nor Skyward Sword experienced any delays, I’m almost certain.
These were just the ones I could come up with off the top of my head, so I’m sure there’s more cases like these (like FE x SMT, which I remembered while typing that sentence).
I really wouldn’t call it exceptions honestly, because it happens a bit too often to call it that, in my opinion. I wouldn’t call it the rule either though, obviously.
But yea, my point is, saying Nintendo doesn’t do that, or does it very rarely, is just false in my view. And the way I see it, the reason why people are getting frustrated with the situation is because there’s too many droughts between game releases, so having to wait so long for their anticipated WiiU games naturally causes frustration, especially when it’s games like Zelda that have been missing from the WiiU entirely so far.

*claps* Congrats. You got me there. But in that list, I only see three possible concrete releases coming in 2016. So sadly there is still ample reason to believe Nintendo is ditching the Wii U for greener pastures in the very near future. If they haven’t said fuck you to us in the past, they damn sure are saying it right now. Maybe that will change as we enter 2016 but I won’t hold my breath. I’ll believe it when I see it, but they haven’t shown me shit yet. E3 2015 would have been perfect for that as it’s meant to show us what to look forward to in the second half of the current year & first half of the next year for the current console but they refused to do so, giving many of us the impression that they didn’t have much, if any, planned for 2016. If I recall, this is the first time Nintendo has done this for E3 which is quite troubling. I’m done giving NintenD’OH! the benefit of the doubt because those bastards have let some of us down for the last time.

Most of the games you listed are platformers and multiplayer/party type games. It gets tiring playing the same old thing over again. Nintendo just does provide enough variety. They can’t fill the gap from third parties that have games like Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, Metal Gear Solid V, Batman Arkham Knight, etc. They don’t make games like those! I mean, just look at next year. It’s looking very bleak. There’s Zelda U and Star Fox. And what else? Star Fox is gonna burn out quick with no online multiplayer and Zelda’s great but that’s a single player story based game. You play it once and then move on. The Wii U is only still alive at this point because people would get upset if Nintendo ditched them. You can list all the Nintendo games you want, but like I said, that don’t make up for the loss of third party games.

Which is exactly why I’ve grown tired of so many of the more popular third party games, but I digress; being in the same genre doesn’t make those games any less worth playing, and it doesn’t dissolve my point.
There’s plenty to play on the Wii U, and if you include exclusives from third parties on top of indies, the number of worthwhile games is too large to honestly claim the system doesn’t have variety.
Not having AAA third party ports doesn’t make the library of the Wii U a bad library. That’s all there is to it.

It’s perfectly fine if you don’t really like AAA games. But that’s not what everyone else thinks. There’s some people like me that like AAA and both indie games. I cannot go without one or the other. Too much AAA is bad. I don’t want DLC and season pass crap in my face all the time. And playing a good indie game is a refreshing change. But as you probably already know, there’s people that only (or mostly) buy AAA games. And you can guess that those are probably what a majority of people that play on current gen consoles buy. That’s why the Wii U is considered “dead”. It doesn’t even get a fraction of those games. I ain’t necessarily saying that Nintendo games are boring or bad, but those alone don’t satisfy these kind of people. Nintendo games are something that they’d probably play on the side and then go back to their main AAA game. It does not work when Nintendo games are pretty much the only thing you can play. And add to the fact that the Gamepad probably looks clunky and unattractive to most people gives them even more reason to try and avoid it.

It is more that the person citing is the Admin and creator of Nintendo forums — presumably, he has some sort of connections.
Hell, I haven’t worked outside of a few gaming websites and I have anonymous connections and sources from major publishers. There is fair room for speculation, but the source is fairly credible (compared to some throwaway account) and not too surprising — it should be more powerful coming out a few years later.

I don’t know, to me personally, it’s still really hard to believe an “unnamed company”, no matter who tells me about them.
I believe it’s best to just wait for Nintendo to personally tell us what exactly the NX will bring us and what we can expect from it.
Though, you’re absolutely right of course, it would only be natural for the NX to be more powerful than the current consoles, considering it will be coming out years after those. I’m definitely looking forward to what Nintendo is going to do with it, and genuinely hope they learned from all the mistakes they’ve done with the WiiU, so we can expect an all-around great video game system.

You have to realize that these 3rd party developers as well as Nintendo’s own 1st party developers are under strict NDA so they can’t be named if they are leaking out information about the NX nor are they suppose to be talking about it in the first place. They have to stay anonymous or they’ll be breaking the agreement and Nintendo could take action or if it’s Nintendo’s own in-house developers they could instantly be fired. I’m not saying this news is 100% confirmation but I could easily see why this publisher chose to stay ” unnamed ” if this news is factual

It’s even more amazing that the moment it’s about Nintendo, then the reaction is the exact opposite of what it would be if these rumors were coming out about Sony or Microsoft’s next consoles, even if it were from an “unnamed publishing company”.
At this point, very few people actually believe Nintendo will make the NX a powerful console of any sort.
I’m hoping Nintendo proves them wrong, if only to shut them up for a while.

I’m hoping Nintendo proves us wrong, too. I hope they break away from what made the Wii “successful” because it was apparently a one hit wonder as this gen has shown. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it wasn’t just the Wii but PS3 & XB360 too because there were a shit load of casuals jumping on all three consoles during that generation til mobile gaming snagged most of them all away. I’ll be legitimately shocked if consoles ever reach those numbers again within the gen they debut.

So, you mean, people go mad about how it’s false rumours when an unnamed source says that kinda things about Sony’s/Microsoft’s platforms? Because that would be the opposite of what’s happening right now, with it being said about Nintendo’s next platform. Either way I don’t think it’s true, as all three companies have their unreasonable fanboys/fangirls believing anything anyone says, as long as it’s positive. Though, I’ll admit, to me it seems like Nintendo has more of them than some others. But yea, that’s just me.

I also hope for Nintendo to make the NX more powerful than the PS4 and XB1, if it really is a home console, but I’d rather have them do it for the right reasons, as in, for their supporters.
But yea, I think it would only be natural for the NX to be more powerful in case it’s a home console, as it’s coming out years after the systems mentioned above, so it would be strange if it was only on par or weaker.

I honestly hope that’s not the case, it would only mean we’ll have to wait longer to get games since “prettier” games take more resources to develop, third parties are not going to start publishing for for the NX just as they didn’t for the Game Cube, I don’t care if the NX doesn’t move PS4 numbers I just want good games and if Nintendo can turn in some profit they’ll keep making them and even the WiiU is turning in profit now.

That’s becoming a general problem with the industry as a whole, yes. The Wii U releases already feel sparse as they are, I can’t see how they plan to keep the rhythm going with stronger hardware. It’d be great if they can attract third-party studios to beef the catalog up, but besides the usual suspects, I’m not counting on it.

Nintendo is smart, do not underestimate them. I can promise you that the NX is not just a simple hardware upgrade. There is something big going on behind the scenes. Sounds like it could be a merger of home console and handheld. Imagine the possibilities if that were to happen! Maybe some sort of new tech we know nothing about is worked in the mix. Either way, it’s NOT a simple hardware upgrade.

My money is on some kind of hybrid. The problem with that would be the price. Making the ‘true’ console the home one would make the package too expensive, and focusing on the portable would disappoint. There’s a third option: that we’re talking about not a true hybrid but an ecosystem (a la Apple and their multiple devices), which seems to be the most conservative option by far.
Although, by 2016 at the earliest PS4 and XB1 will be two years old, and dev costs go down as technology improves and manufacturation procedures become more efficient. Maybe by that point the costs are low enough for Nintendo to sell the NX at a competent price.
As I see it, the problem is the portable. If it belongs to the DS family line instead of being just an updated gamepad, kiss your money goodbye.

well that remind me the hype before the wii U (project cafe) where the wii U was supposed to be better than xbox360 and PS3 by miles away. In fact the wii U was barely better. Sorry if I am not on board with that news. Like a lot of people I will wait and see but even if the NX is a success, I really think and worry that Nintendo is rushing that much to get a new hardware out, the wii U is 3 years old, the new 3DS is just 1 year old and by the time the nx come out the wii U will be 4 years old and the new 3ds will be 2 years old. It will be more logical to have the NX announced during the E3 2016, get a previous in 2017 and coming out in November 2017.

All of this seems highly unlikely. It could end up being more powerful than a PS4 or Xbox One, but I don’t think it would be as powerful as described here. Seems as though it would make the console pretty expensive if it were better than top of line PC hardware.

That Skylake is about $400 alone, even if its massed produced that would still be a lot for that CPU, let alone a modified one. It does seem too good to be true, now lets say this is actually true, this console would be $500+

Yes, but because it splits it’s processing power to stream games to the GamePad, it is likely more on the same par. But games that ran on all three systems (PS3/Xbox 360/Wii U) generally had Wii U pulling ahead in performance. You can see more at Digital Foundry via Eurogamer.

That would be a welcome change. I miss the days when Nintendo’s hardware was competitive, spec-wise. The N64 was a beast, despite being cartridge-based, and the GCN was middle-of-the-pack in its own gen (some of the prettiest games from the early 00s were on the ‘cube).

Actually, the only thing the Gamecube didn’t have over the nearest competitor was the number of on-screen polygons. Otherwise, it was the most powerful at the time.

Nintendo have never stated it was a home console. They only stated it is a dedicated gaming system. I don’t know how so much misinformation gets spread around.

right and a “platform” which may mean that the idea of a console (home or handheld) is something they are trying to redefine… maybe, all baseless spec here, but maybe they won’t ditch the WiiU and we will see something different, while still being able to keep the last generation of systems in the WiiU and new 3DS… it’ll be fun to see how it turns out

The NX will be a handheld gaming device that also can be played on your TV. It will have 3d functionality much like the New 3ds. It will be a cart based device, however Nintendo will fully support and heavily advertise digital downloads. It will be the first handheld device that out powers current traditional console hardware. It will have 1TB of memory and have access to the Apple App Store. The device will have touch screen support, and will be able to download any existing game on the Eshop, including all current Wii U titles. The Handheld device (NX) will act as the Wii U tablet, while playing on your T.V..

I feel like if it does turn out to be powerful, Nintendo wouldn’t even know how to utilize it. They are still going to baby sit and probably make quickie games that don’t take much imagination/creativity.

Nintendo didn’t even make xenoblade so that’s not their imagination, and splatoon is just a bunch of concepts from other games thrown into one game. Paintball mode from goldeneye mixed with Graffit mode from Tony Hawk Pro Skater games and they added the ability to turn into a squid and move through the paint/climb walls. Nothing too impressive.

Xenoblade is a first party to Nintendo and works directly with their teams, so that’s still Nintendo’s imagination.
And Splatoon is an original concept because it does all of those things in an online arena shooter, and many of the weapons are unique and creative as well.
Quite a bit of it is impressive.

This sounds like a Wii U-level jump, except mid-generation instead of at the start of one. If the Xbox One and PS4 both have long runs again, this could be a great situation for Nintendo’s new hardware.

I want to know what will happen when PS5 comes out? Sure the NX could be more powerful than PS4 but if that is all Nintendo is aiming at then it will be just like Wii U….a flop. They need to be thinking of PS5 while the NX is currently in R&D.

The Wiiu has best games of this generation and had amazing 1080p HD graphics, With releases like Mario Party 10, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker has shown how games should be made other titles are on pre order Rodea similar to Sega Nights, Mario Tennis Ultra Smash and exclusive Xeno Blade Chronicles X this game is going to be good.
Nintendo NX has very powerful CPU and line of i7 core skylake this proves to be very interesting is similar current i7 core CPU this will have incredible GPU to this CPU, Nintendo has good harrware system, this will be good seller from day one if it have AAA Nintendo franchises and third party games.
