Rumor: EA Criticizes Wii U For Not Having Sports Entertainment Apps

It sounds like one of the reasons EA isn’t supportive of Wii U is due to its lack of entertainment applications for sports, such as MLB.TV, NBA, WWE Network, NHL Gamecenter Live, and the NFL. According to a rumor, the publisher believes that the PlayStation 4’s success is partly attributed to how it offers a wide selection of pertinent content to sports fans.

Sources claim that during a December meeting between EA and Nintendo executives, an EA exec “criticized Wii U for not having entertainment apps for MLB.TV, NBA, WWE Network, NHL Gamecenter Live, and the NFL”. The PlayStation 4 has all of those applications, and EA feels that this is key reason for the machine’s success among sports fans. The demand here is that Nintendo ensures NX is able to run such apps, or offer similar functionality to entice sports fans.

    1. But, it doesn’t have games either lol so what exactly is it for?

I tell you what, Miiverse, its the best greatest thing since the invention of the wheel.

On a serious note: what game related applications does it have? You would think it would have twitch since one of the more popular games that gets constantly streamed is Smash. But if doesn’t.

      1. I agree with no game related app. Nintendo had Nintendo TVii so the no sports app is just stupid. In the beginning people was using that while watching sports. All it really had was questions you can answer while the game was on and you can see stats. You could go the sites and get that information. Who is using these apps on their console when they can watch regular TV or use their computer. I know this is a small amount of people but none of my sport fan friends use the apps on PS4 or XboxOne. I guess others are using it.

        1. I’m a big sports fan, but I don’t use any of the apps either. And I don’t play many video game sports. I watch them and when I have time, I play sports in real life. And as you said, I watch sports on tv or the computer if I have to.

        2. Oh I personally know a few people that bought XBO’s just for the sports apps. They find the whole Snap feature usefull for watching multiple games. That or VOD at the same time.

It might not be a huge deal to core gamers but the casual sports fans (at least the ones I know) love it.

Funny thing, the last time Live was down they were pist XD I guess they forgot that they could watch all that stuff on TV because they’re so accustom to using the apps. Lol

          1. So these apps let you watch games? As in you don’t need cable or satellite to watch? If so, that is actually cool. I usually study at my girlfriend’s house, and her family doesn’t have cable, so I have to watch on crappy stream sites with horrible quality. It’s not enough to make me run out and buy an Xbox One/PS4, but still cool if that is the case. And I would love to have that on a Nintendo console. If I misunderstood, then dagnabit.

            1. No you still need Cable or Satellite, but you just dont need Cable boxes or cables on said TV. So if you (lets say) have the cable box in the living room, and a tv in your room, you wouldnt have to connect that TV, as long as you have the ESPN app, you can stream that live or on demand. Well in your case, if your GF had an XBO, all you would have to do is get the app, activate it with your cable provider account (lets say you have comcast) sign in, and ta-da! At least this is what some of my buddies tell me. Im not a sports guy so I wouldnt know if they were lying or not.

            2. look at it this way, its just like those Xfinity apps on smart phones. Were you can watch live TV or VOD from your phone as long as youre a Comcast user. Its just that its in a console, so you dont have to use that small screen, and perks of it being on Xbox its that it has that Snap feature.

You could also just use that same app on most Smart TV’s though, and if you dont care about watching simultaneous games, then that would be the best and cheapest way to go about it.

                1. She doesn’t need it, as long as you have an account to log into (could be yours, or a buddy’s) and she has internet, then you’re all good. It’s really not that hard, but its honestly too combursome compared to the ease of just changing the channel (if you have cable at home that is.)

  1. If EA were to support NX (Based on recent Rumors) Can Mario Sports Games and EA Sports Games co-exist? They weren’t supportive of SEGA making their own First Party Sports Games during the Dreamcast.

    1. Mario sports games don’t usually cover most of the sports EA uses like Basketball or Football, so if anything, EA could probably use Mario characters as guest stars in their own games to help attract Nintendo fans like they did with some of their Gamecube games.

  2. I have a feeling Nintendo is just giving them lips service for media attention. The whole reason they united their development teams was because they believe they can fully support the NX by themselves. They really don’t care about the badly made yearly sports games. I’m sure they wouldn’t turn Star Wars and games like Unravel away though. EA sounds so sanctimonious. It doesn’t seem like Nintendo fans care about EA sports games and that won’t change. If you want to play those games you can go buy a PS4 or Xbone. Tens of millions of people are not going to leave those consoles and start playing those games on the NX unless the NX changes the game so to speak allowing multiple people to play on the go (like a complete soccer team comprised of each player having their own handheld) and maybe that is on the table.
Even though Ubisoft are huge d-bags I think they are the developer Nintendo should be trying to mend fences with along with Rockstar and Rocksteady. Get them and Square and that’s all you need.

  4. I don’t care for sports so my opinion might be a bit biased, but I don’t see why a video game console would need anything sports related at all aside from the crappy sports shovelware that gets thrown out each year and even then I don’t see the point. I imagine it’d be faster and easier to get sports info on my PC or phone. Heck, Google Now kept throwing sports scores at me for a while after my father asked me to check a score for him ONCE. The only thing remotely sports related I can see being worth it on a console is Twitch for esports but I’d just use that for TwitchPlaysPokemon or something and even then I use my TV as my PC monitor so all I have to do is either open a webpage or use the Nexus Player to do that.

  5. “It sounds like one of the reasons EA isn’t supportive of Wii U is due to its lack of entertainment applications for sports, ”

no. the main reason is, that Nintendo has a kinda closed ecosystem and a bad selling console plus they don’t want EA to infect their system with bullshit like Origin.
Not having Sports apps is like the last reason not to be interested in making money on any platform. They might just think, WiiU doesn’t even offer that.

  6. The Wii U needs more entertainment apps in general, but personally I’ll say it has enough. However does it needs sports apps? No, but it’s welcomed. Having a good amount of sports apps isn’t going to take away from anything and it’ll just add more to the entertainment content.

    1. The key to 3DS success: It’s numerous entertainment apps!

Wii U needs more games, the end; if you have the money to afford a console chances are you already have cable tv or a pc with an internet connection.

  7. Aside from the lack of a WWE Network app, I can’t think of any other sports app I’d really want on a Nintendo console. Not that it matters anymore if the Wii U has it or not or if the NX gets it SINCE MY PLAYSTATION 4 HAS IT!!

  8. While I agree that lack of streaming sports apps is very far down on the list of reasons why the Wii U hasn’t done well, I think it speaks to a larger problem Nintendo has had for years. Nintendo just shuns multimedia functionality in general. I mean, the Wii U cant even play DVDs. That’s pathetic. The Wii U discs are based on blu-ray tech, but can’t playback blu-ray movies. Also pathetic in late 2012, let alone 2016. If you think multimedia functionality (in terms of streaming and physical media) isn’t a major factor in deciding which console most gamers decide to buy, you’re kidding yourself. DVD playback was a key reason why the PS2 dominated the 6th gen console war. The Wii U is the best multimedia console Nintendo has had, but it’s still way behind Sony and Microsoft.

Sports games sell consoles as well. 10 million Fifa 16 copies sold for the X1 and PS4. I hate Fifa, but a lot of people love it. If you don’t have it, you just lost 10 million potential Wii U sales.

    1. If you have the money to own a console chances are you already have cable tv, a dvd/blu-ray player and an internet connection, so what’s exactly the point of having the console cost $200 more so it does everything your other devices already do?

      1. It’s better to have more features tan less. Many younger gamers and college-aged to 20-something gamers have limited funds or only have access to said devices in a family setting. I didn’t necessarily buy a PS2 to watch DVDs, but it certainly help set it apart from the Gamecube. Watching my DVDs in my room while my parents watched their TV shows was very nice. Nintendo is literally forcing people to buy other means for consuming media. It’s not shocking many gamers are buying X1s and PS4s.

  9. Funny how so-called gaming platforms seem to need non-gaming apps in order to get games. MS & Western 3rd parties just keep killing consoles & console-gaming; or helping kill dedicated gaming devices & optimized games. & damn you, smartphone/tablet-gaming!

How Console-Gaming Was Destroyed From the Inside (for entertainment purposes sorta:

    Step 1:
A PC company makes a console (Xbox), but it hosts more PC genres & PC multiplats.

    Step 2:
Release a successor (360) that looks like a PC tower.
Be the 1st home-console *wink* for that gen (7th).
Ensure that PC-style FPS is the dominant genre, while emphasizing specs, graphics, & photorealism in nearly every title.
Money-hat the crap outta 3rd parties.
Incorporate PC OSes w/ a portal for Xbox Marketplace.
Note: Major coup (in the grand scheme) if a competing console (PS3) aligns w/ the same agenda (hijacking the home-console arena). Even if the convert is competiton, the agenda will gain better traction as opposed to going it alone. W/ a tramendous amount of capital (both monetary & OS branding), the war is still ours.

    Step 3:
Release an all-in-1 home entertainment box (X1).
Fill w/ off-the-shelf parts & use a more PC-centric architecture that’s comparitively below par for gaming (not a top priority).
Incorporate box w/ a modified PC OS (Windows 10).
Money-hat the crap outta 3rd parties.
Note: The converted competiton might beat us @ our own game, yet failing to make a profit on the Xbox brand never stopped us before. But in the long term, the converted competiton will be no more than another Mac.

Anyway, I’d imagine that since Wii U is able to run apps, then both it & NX could run sports apps; just a matter of licensing & willingness. But what do I know? I’m not into sports (gaming or otherwise), & the majority of my entertainment apps are on my Fire TV, & even there they deal w/ TV, movies, videos, & music. My smartphone only has 3 entertainment apps (YouTube, Chess, & Sudoku), 4 counting Chrome.
