Nintendo UK Says Nintendo 3DS Still Has “A Big Life Ahead Of It”

The latest edition of MCV has an interview with Nintendo UK product manager Remy van Leeuwen. The purpose of the interview was to discuss the upcoming launch of Yo-Kai Watch and to talk about just how big the franchise has been in Japan. During the interview Leeuwen says that the company feels that the Nintendo 3DS has still got a big life ahead of it and hopes that Yo-Kai Watch has the same impact in Europe as it did in Japan.

“It is difficult to say whether it will have the same impact in the West, but I definitely think that there is a lot of potential for it, especially working together with the likes of [toy company] Hasbro and [TV company] Turner.”

“Everyone is going to back it to its fullest. Because of the nature of Yo-kai and their emotional abilities, it makes it quite easy for kids to relate to them. For instance, there is a Yo-kai called Cheeksqueek, which basically makes people fart. That’s been a hit with kids in our research.”

“One of the other key aspects that will definitely resonate with kids in the UK is the comedy aspect to it. The characters themselves are just funny, and they’re quite deep, too. We will be trying to bring that out in our campaign.”

“We live in a wildly different time if you compare it to when the first Pokemon games were released. But there are a lot of other opportunities now to engage with kids, with the TV show starting on Cartoon Network, I think that’s a great place for kids to be introduced to the franchise, to get to know the universe and characters. And then go and explore from there.”

“3DS has still got a big life ahead of it,” van Leeuwen adds. “There will be a lot of great experiences and Yo-kai Watch, particularly, will help expand it into the kids market. There’s more beyond this first title, so there’s hardware driving potential.”

    1. Sales mean nothing, it always goes Handheld then Home Console. The DS was selling great yet they still came out with the 3DS. A platform has a set life cycle. When the 3DS came out they started working on the next handheld, then the Wii U came out then they started on the next Home Console. So history repeats itself and shows us that the next handheld is coming. And the 3DS has aged and slowed down.

  1. The 3ds still does possibly have more time on the market of it keeps getting good games but not the wii u that console has been dead already and horse shit for sometime

  2. Honestly, I’d love to see support for the 3DS keep going.

I play mine all the time. It’s given me some of my best moments from Nintendo games over the past few years. To me, it’s arguably the perfect handheld.

    1. Yeah. My 3DS has seen a fuck-ton of action. That’s why I bought a N3DS early, I game on it most of tge time.
      N3DS gaming – 80%
      Console gaming – 20%

  3. I’m struggling to see why Yo-Kai Watch is doing well anywhere. Sure, the overworld looks nice and searching for Yo-Kai is a great use of the 3DS hardware, but the battle system is awful. I’ve only played the demo, but is there any strategy beyond drawing a few shapes on the touch screen? If that’s it, the game is far too easy. I also couldn’t find any way to check the stats of my Yo-Kai. I’ll pass on it. If the CN series doesn’t annoy the heck out of me after five seconds, I might watch it. EDIT: Cheeksqueek exists. Immediate skip.

    1. Yeah, the battle system is a joke. It feels like a phone game more than anything else. All you do is rotate which of those hideous monsters are fighting and draw little patterns to use their special attacks. That’s literally it.

      1. Oh dear. I thought that was just me being awful at the game. The Yo-Kai all have terrible names that are either impossible to remember or plain stupid. Why is that cat thing the main Yo-kai yet I can’t pronounce its name? At least any old fool could say ‘Pikachu’. Did I mention that one of the Yo-Kai is literally a Lombre? Speaking of ‘hideous monsters’, who thought that those designs would be in any way endearing? I know Herdier has the worst Pokemon design, but at least it’s not a dog with some old guy’s face on the front.

        1. Mascot status: Names will probably not change, like how Pikachu is called Pikachu worldwide and not localized into other names in different regions.
Walkappa and Lombre are both based off the same Japanese mythology: The Kappa, so of course there are going to be similarities to some Pokemon who are based off of mythology.
And hey, that dog evolves into something a lot more rugged.

    2. The demo is a pretty poor representation of the full game, as it locks out item usage and access to the menu, which is needed to see yokai stats and equipment.
Strategy mostly comes for boss fights and general team preparation before a fight begins.
As for the anime, the Cheeksqueak episode is entirely skippable as he does not appear again until episode 97 or so.

    3. Yeah, I tried Yokai Watch, but that battle system is kind of annoying after a while. I tried one episode of the anime, and couldn’t finish it XD The Japanese opening is really freaking catchy though :p

The 3DS is Nintendo’s best handheld. They were all great in their own right.
But as much as I love my 3DS I wouldn’t mind having a graphics bump and 720p screen. Imagine the next “Link Between Worlds” in HD!
Or Luigis mansion or Metroid 2D or fPS prime in HD on a handheld? Yes please!

  5. Sure.

All they have to do is release all their future games exclusively for the New 3DS, and make people feel cheap for still owning the original 3DS.

If they do that shit for Pokemon Sun & Moon, heads are going to roll.

  6. “Hardware potential”?

Let’s keep in mind that this is the system that Sakurai felt it was necessary to a version of SSB4 on, the one the superior Wii U version had to have the EXACT same roster as, and the reason why the Ice Climbers aren’t playable in any shape or form.

And if there’s so much potential, why have a newer 3DS with the exclusive SNES library and games like Xenoblade Chronicles 3D?
