Nintendo of America’s executive vice-president of sales, Scott Moffitt, talked about the upcoming content for the Nintendo Wii U. Moffitt said that “there’s certainly plenty of content for existing Wii U owners, but there’s plenty of reasons for people who’ve never owned the console to grab one now while they last”. When he was asked how many Wii U consoles were left, Moffitt responded by saying that “we will be transitioning production to NX, so our message to fans is to grab a Wii U while you can, because they won’t be around forever”.
I feel like this is strongly implying that the NX won’t have backwards compatibility..
Same here. It wouldn’t surprise me at all. They get to change the architecture and sell their Wii U games at the price they want without reprinting them via eShop.
If that’s the case, then I’m all for it. I’d take more powerful hardware over backwards compatibility (That I rarely use to begin with) any day.
Can tell you right now the NX won’t be very powerful. Reggie already came out and stated, just like for the Wii U, that Nintendo doesn’t care about specs but the content. It’s as this one guy said in the comments: “You need power to get content”.
Id rather it not be. They need to rid anything that has to do with the Wii era with the NX.
I hope they focus on new games with the NX instead of remakes.
I’m hoping the HD remake thing is just a fad that’s popular now because of how a lot of visuals from 10-20 year ago have aged really poorly, and they have the ability (and excuse :p) to bring back their big titles that sold well. Though, there are a TON of PS4 remakes/remasters of PS3 games that don’t make too much sense lol.
It is not a fad. It has been done every generation including on the NES. There were Atari classics.
The last time I read about that, the ps4 had 18 remakes. And I agreed, it is very cuestionable if it is needed. But I think is a sort of palliative because those consoles has not backward compatibility.
It’s ALL about cost to be honest. It’s cheaper to do a remake than to make a new game. Plus remakes can help reduce the gaps in content droughts. I will expect their to be quite a few remakes coming to the NX. It’s the same for all consoles as the cost of game production is now insanely high compared to previous generations.
OR ELSE…
Good news for NX, but bad news for Wii U.
I’m excited for the NX, but I’m going to be sad to say goodbye to the Wii U. I’ll still play it for Splatoon, 3D World, Pokken, Pikmin 3 and the sort, but I’ll probably move 95% of my focus to the Nintendo NX.
Or what? :D they won’t end up putting Zelda:BotW on Wii U….
Wouldn’t that be some unbelievably effed up Magikarp?
I’ve never seen Magikarp used as an insult before XD I like it.
But yeah, that would suck, but they probably have too much worked done on the Wii U port to ever consider that.
It started out as a way for me to quickly describe a floppy or shady situation, but now has evolved for use in many circumstances.
I’ve been using it for a while goof, but more importantly feel free to use it!
:D
I’ve had a Wii U for a while now.
Good system in my opinion, even though Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros, Xenoblade X, and Star Fox Zero have been the only games I enjoyed for it.
Considering they just recently said they would be supporting the Wii U even after the NX launch, I don’t see what the rush is to get a Wii U. This statement seems to conflict with the recent comments about continued support. It almost sounds like once NX launches, Wii U will be abandoned. Or am I reading into this too much?
Do you really believe tha Nintendo will support the Wii U even after the NX launches!?
LOL!
Sounds like Wii U production may well be winding down now. They are only planning to sell 800k this year. I can’t imagine Nintendo wanting to have more than 250k on hand, or in the wild, by the time the NX hits shelves.
The Wii U hasn’t had support since 2015. All upcoming titles were either finished a long time ago or have been in development for a long time (Zelda). The sole exception I can think of is Paper Mario.
It’s for the best, really. Not suporting the Wii U anymore is the right call if it means the NX launches with full-fledged titles.
I know all this. I’m not expecting any support. I was just pointing out that they seem to be conflicting with themselves on the topic.
Of course they have to lie through their teeth about Wii U’s support. Saying “Wii U support? We dropped that last year” is bad for investors and PR alike.
Oh absolutely haha.
I know everyone and their dog have said this at this point, but they said that about the GBA before the original DS’s launch. I think we got a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon title, and some other small titles before it just left quietly :p
Yes, I know. I realize all this, and was just making the point of Nintendo saying two different things about Wii U support.
If they continue to support the Wii U I think it’ll only be for the sake of people who own a Wii U but aren’t ready to upgrade to NX. So there’d be no need to actually continue sell Wii U consoles.
No doubt about that. Considering the lackluster support it has had over the last year, I feel Zelda and Paper Mario are the last two big name games the Wii U is getting.
They’ve already abandoned the Wii U if you think about it. Just a few more larger titles like Zelda, Paper Mario, Tokyo Mirage, and Yooka-Laylee. All are worth holding onto your Wii U for. However, if you want to sell you better do it fast. I just purchased a Mario Kart bundle (with red wii mote, red wheel, Mario Kart 8 disc) off ebay for $227.50 free shipping. This morning I saw a White Wii U go for $179 after shipping with several Wii U games, a slew of wii games, wii fit plus board and game and two Guitar Hero guitars with 3 GH games. The prices have plummeted. I don’t think Wii U prices will go much further beyond $150 as some Wii bundles still command that. So, there’ll be plenty of Wii U for everyone and rushing out to buy brand new only makes sense if there’s a sweet Zelda themed bundle. But by then, the NX will most likely have its own Zelda themed launch bundle so why get the Wii U. Maybe if there’s no BC and I hope there isn’t.
Never understood why people sell their old games they like. Your old games don’t break just because you get a new console. People who only want the newest thing are the worst. The NX could end up even more useless. We know nothing about it at all. Nintendo will ALWAYS do their own thing and their new console is gonna have some sort of new gimmick for sure trust me.
So i guess I have to save up at least $350 to play Pikmin 4 now. Damn. Well there is Breath of the Wild. If Pikmin 4 is for both versions anyway I rather play it on the new console. Darn I wish Pikmin 4 was unveiled at E3. Im loojing foward to see this NX though.
Pikmin 4, Pikmin 4, Pikmin 4, Pikmin 4, Pikmin 4, Pikmin 4, Pikmin 4, Pikmin 4, for NX
when NX is out and Wii U is hard to find you will probably see it online being sold for insane prices since it will be “rare”
What about VC? I assume that would require some more work internally for the NX to allow Wii U games to be emulated on it, and for the Gamepad to be compatible with it.
I think, that just is not going to happen. I mean, there is 2 gens gap betwen GCN and WiiU, have you seen GCN VC games? Even the VC wii’s catalog is poo. Of course I hope be wrong, but those are facts.
N64 library isn’t any better either. Out of the 296 titles released in America on that system, there’s only about 30 first-party Nintendo titles. In fact, I can name the ones I know off the top of my head: Super Mario 64, Mario Party, Mario Party 2, Mario Party 3, Mario Golf, Mario Tennis, Paper Mario, Dr. Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, LOZ: Ocarina of Time, LOZ: Majora’s Mask, Yoshi Story, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Star Fox 64, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Puzzle League, Pokemon Stadium, Pokemon Stadium 2, Pilotwings 64, Wave Race 64, 1080º Snowboarding, Super Smash Bros., Sin & Punishment, Diddy Kong Racing, Hey You Pikachu!, and F-Zero X.
What does the Gamecube have to do with anything? I’m talking about the NX playing Wii U games, a 1 generation gap.
This sounds like transparent PR talk. Basically trying to inflate the idea of the Wii U’s scarcity to have people afraid they’ll miss out or make people go out and buy it in hopes of selling it as a collector’s item in the future. Trying to drain as much money from consumer’s as they could by somewhat playing on their fear. As for future titles to look forward to, what exactly is there besides Breath of the Wild and Tokyo Mirage Session?
its a great system btw.. its almost like 2 consoles.. lot of great games.. im not gonnna sell mine.. its a piece of art and when nxt comes out im gonna place it next to my wii u
definitely. I have a wii U so I am not worried about it. It is a great system I won’t put away
same here. i love my Wii U an i kno ill will be playen my best wii u games for maney maney years to come i stil play the NES and SNES mario games i loved as a kid! ill will get NX if ther is a new mario kart game
As if shelves aren’t still lined with Wiis, Xbox 360s and PS3s in most major electronic stores. The number of people who would have to buy Wii Us for them to run out would probably be another few million at this point, and looking at past sales, even with Breath of the Wild on the way, that just won’t happen lol.
Theres Tokyo mirage sessions, paper Mario, and zelda left for the system, and if you just want zelda, just get an nx. I guess there’s also yooka laylee, but that’s coming to every other platform under the sun
Stop telling people to buy something you know nothing about. The game will be fine on Wii U. Early adopters will always be losers. Wait, then buy the NX is it’s any good and when it gets cheaper. If Zelda’s any good too you can always buy that again as well and sell the Wii U copy. Until we actually know everything about the NX don’t jump any guns.
“Tokyo Mirage Sessions”………UGH!
Nintendo is encouraging scalping again.
Dam, I sold one of my Wii Us last year cos I thought if I sold it later the NX would make it worthless.
This is actually a smart ploy. By encouraging high secondhand value people will get more selling their Wii U towards an NX. It also discourages people from selling their Wii U so soon and thus potentially buy more games as they hold onto it.
If the NX isn’t backward compatible with Wii U games, then there’s many Wii U games that I’ll never play. Because every time I buy a new console, the old one gets packed away. Which I only take back out on rare moments.
I highly recommend getting custom made shelf’s to organize all your videogame consoles, I’m planning on making a custom shelf for myself this summer for all the consoles that I own and hoping to play all of them again without putting them away.
i wish i could see see the faces of these drones when they spout this garbage. i wonder if it’s like Pinnochio, and the nose just keeps growing…
Seeing the wii u debacle I don’t trust Nintendo to do well with the Nx. I think the NX will suffer the same fate as the wii u.where most of people won’t see the need to upgrade from wii to Nx.there are also People like me who did not purchase some wii u games will not rush to buy the NX and Nintendo will still receive income from the wii u. I personally will get the Nx in 4 years time to play Mario kart 9, xenoblade chronicles X2, and the new Zelda. If by luck Nintendo decided to pay for bayonetta 3 then I may consider this system before but as is stand now I won’t buy the system until the game I want are released.
One upcoming game! No thanks.
Ehhh if the one at the pawn shop gets any cheaper I’ll pick it up.
