Bethesda Discuss Developing For The Nintendo NX

Bethesda games have rarely come to Nintendo consoles. However, Bethesda’s Vice President clearly keeps an eye on the company. In a recent interview with Metro, Pete Hines discussed Bethesda’s relations with Nintendo and his thoughts on the upcoming NX console. According to Hines, the reason their games never come to Nintendo consoles is purely hardware limitations. While very coy, Hines also hints that he has seen the NX and what it can do. He doesn’t really give any information but its certainly interesting that Bethesda has seen the console already. You can read the full interview on the Metro website.

GC: Now, Nintendo is not a subject I ever imagined talking to you about. But there was a very interesting quote recently about you talking to them all the time. But I can’t imagine what about?

PH: [laughs] We talk to them about games! We talk to them about what they’re up to!

GC: I’m glad to hear it, I’m just surprised.

PH: It’s not like we’ve never done anything on Nintendo. We haven’t done anything on Nintendo in a very long time, but we did some Star Trek stuff back in the day. Star Trek: Tactical Assault or something. Look, our philosophy is we want to make our games, as they’re designed and built, available on as many platforms as possible. And so Nintendo, as a maker of a platform, you want to constantly be in touch with them, to see what they’re doing, where they’re headed, and whether or not there might be some opportunities down the line, with where they’re going.

GC: Third party support is a constant problem for them, but I think it’s questionable whether people would even buy things like Battlefield or GTA if they were on a Nintendo console. Is the reason you haven’t supported them much in the past partly because you don’t think your games would sell to that audience?

PH: No, no. it’s usually been one of a technical… hardware issue. It’s just, what it is that the devs are making and what are the hardware requirements that they’re looking at, to support what they’re making? And what fits? And anything that is below the line is, ‘Well, we can make it work, but we’d have to cut this or that or do it like…’ But no, that’s not the point. The point is to take the game, as you designed it, and to get it working on those platforms. Not make a bunch of cuts and a bunch of changes and bring out some other version of it.

GC: So if NX is announced in the next few weeks and is as powerful as an Xbox One or higher, then…

PH: Then it will absolutely be something that we consider. Okay… let’s say they come out and say tomorrow it does X, Y, and Z. Well, Dishonored 2 is way down the road, it’s not in the conversation. But anything that is in development, I think we’d take a look at and see if technically does it line up with what they’re doing?

And then to your point, of course we always want to look at what we’re doing from an audience standpoint. But I think that we have any number of things that might appeal to the Nintendo audience. Maybe it’s not as appealing as Super Smash Bros., or it doesn’t appeal to that exact same audience, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not still an audience there.

GC: Do you know what the NX is?

PH: We talk all the time to everybody, about what they’re up to.

GC: [laughs] You can say whether you’ve seen it can’t you? Just as long as you don’t actually tell me anything.

PH: [poker face] …

GC: Boy, I bet those Nintendo NDAs are something else.

PH: [laughs]

  1. I wonder if Nintendo passed some money their way if they wouldn’t mind making the cuts and changes. I understand they don’t want to change their vision. The project cars devs said a similar thing.

  2. Why do developers always think that owners of Nintendo consoles only play Nintendo games?! I play any game as long as it has good gameplay and isn’t dumbed down like “15min cinematic intro. Walk to the shed, get the gun – 5min cinematic cutscene. Shoot some people – cutscene! Talk to your hot female boss – cutscene! Walk 10.000 miles – achievement!”

    1. I think Wolfinstien is fun as Hell. Playing through it now and it is a lot of good old fashion fun, with a lot more story than you’d expect from a franchise that kicked off the FPS genre back when you installed it from a floppy disk.

    2. its not that we dont buy them its that they wont compeat with nintendo its FEAR and the fact they gimp games when porting and or dont include nintendos great controllers…

stop gimping ports nd stop blaming nintendo

  3. This is one of the more interesting and better interviews I’ve read in a while. It’s good that Bethesda is being honest as to why many games they make aren’t on Nintendo platforms. I wish other companies would just state the truth as well. I’m looking at you, Ubisoft.

    1. I completely agree. it’s a truth we all know… only nintendo and 3rd party devs just keep lying to themselves about it..

“Third party support is a constant problem for them, but I think it’s questionable whether people would even buy things like Battlefield or GTA if they were on a Nintendo console. what a stupid thing to say.. good thing he ignored it and answered honestly. gaming journalism is dead!

  4. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

    ||Disgusting cretin, these fools are slaves to the Xbots and must be purged as soon as possible…||

  5. If the MX ends being an all new all different Juggernaut handheld Hybrid i don’t see any issue for them to develop games for the system. Hopefully Nintendo will reveal something in the coming weeks…..smh

  7. It doesn’t matter one way or another to me right now since I got a PS4. So if I ever do decide to buy & play a Bethesda game, it won’t be the end of the world for me if NX doesn’t get the game. If the NX is something I have & a Bethesda game releases for it and it’s a game that fits Nintendo perfectly, I might consider getting it on NX instead of PS4. Unless NX is a weak little bitch compared to PS4 then no. I’ll stick with PS4 version.

  8. Supposedly the NX is shaping to be like the Wii 2: it’ll appeal to the casuals while trying to keep Nintendo fans interested. The last relevant game Bethesda published on a Nintendo were some crappy NES titles. I definitely wouldn’t count Bethesda on it unless the NX is some kind of a runaway success like the Wii and they’ll want to join the ride with some mini-game collection to trick the casuals into buying it.

Here’s who you can realistically count on NX:

    Nintendo
    Japanese third-parties
    Ubisoft
    Indies
    Activision (only Skylanders though)

If you want the rest go PC or buy one of the other consoles.

    1. but why would i want to say

motion gyro in new zelda have a great experience and then expect a turd party to also give me a great experience but then gives me a gimped port and rubbish controls

i own a pc but i still would pick a pc game on nintendo with its amazing controllers EXAMPLE i own doom i play via a steam pad and gyro mouse

i would rather play hands apart usding a next gen wii remote and chuck

i want thrd partys to support properely not this gimping shit or excuses
