Nintendo Issues Statement About Ending Wii U Production

We recently found out that Wii U production is coming to an end, and Nintendo has since issued a statement to clarify the situation. The company is most likely planning to shift focus onto Nintendo Switch, which is scheduled to launch in March. The following comments were made by a Nintendo representative regarding the Wii U console’s production:

“As recently posted by Nintendo on the Wii U website in Japan, Wii U production will end in the near future for the Japanese domestic market. We have nothing to announce in terms of exact timing. We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”

        1. Yes you absolutely can take your time. There is a time limit in a sense, meaning once it gets dark you have to be back at the ship so your Pikmin don’t get eatin. But you can explore for practically as many days as you want. I really took my time and had plenty of fruit left over at the end. The game is really designed for you to go slow and explore.

    1. It’s likely that software development for Wii U has ceased or is about to do so. BoTW is the Wii U’s swan song if rumors turn out to be true.

  1. Hum… Funny thing is, Nintendo have stated themselves the Switch is not a direct replacement for the Wii U, yet they are halting its production forever.

Nintendo, keep in mind: You won’t ever get us fooled again.

    1. Actually, calling it a “replacement” is what you and many other fans have made up yourselves.
Kimishima specifically said that it’s not a “successor” to the Wii U or 3DS; saying that it’s a new way to play. And essentially said because of it being different, he didn’t purely see it as a replacement. Which makes total sense. It would be illogical to associate the Switch as a replacement for one of their worst selling consoles.

It’s amazing how many people have twisted that statement by him. I guess things like that spread quick.

The DS didn’t even fully replace the GBA like I see so many people saying. I remember new GBA games coming out for quite a while, even after the DS was around. Just scrolling through NA releases of GBA games after the launch of DS, there were over 70 titles I quickly counted. Plus the DS had a slot to play GBA games, so that also might be a reason for them saying that.

      Hope this helped you understand.

      1. I see what you mean, but, as you pointed out, software development was not interrupted for GBA once the DS was in the market. I believe what bothers the Wii U userbase is the lack of relevant titles for the console in the end of its lifespan — the same happened to the Wii and GCN. Besides BoTW, I fail to see a big hitter being pitched.

While Nintendo abandon its systems once the newest one is out, both Microsoft and Sony have better policies with regard their last-generation consoles. If it became a practice in the industry, why Nintendo can’t do the same and make the money we all threw in the Wii U well worth?

And just to kindly amend your comment, it was Iwata who said something along those lines (replacement/sucessor), not Kimishima. Actually, several outlets from the West translated what Iwata said in May 2015 using the word “replacement”; maybe that’s the reason the idea has been kind of “twisted” — although I cannot see much of a difference between “replacement” and “sucessor” in this context, but I can be wrong.

        1. I think the big difference between Nintendo’s consoles and Sony/Microsoft’s is that in most recent generations, Nintendo hasn’t had great third party support. I’m sure most titles released on PS3/Xbox360 after the newest consoles released were 3rd party titles. Much like most GBA titles were from 3rd parties after the DS released. And with that in consideration, if Nintendo didn’t focus their first party game development efforts on their newest console, what incentive would people have to buy it? The way I see it, abandoning the Wii U is their best business option, as continuing to support it wouldn’t be in their best interest from any angle; and of course there’s no 3rd parties around to help keep it relevant. It’s a shame, but that’s business.

Also the quote I’m referring to is from Kimishima. https://www.vg247.com/2016/05/16/nintendo-nx-is-neither-the-successor-to-the-wii-u-nor-to-the-3ds/

          1. You’re right about the 3rd party support. Actually, this uncovers another Nintendo’s deficiency: the lack of ability in dealing with 3 parties. If Nintendo always chooses not to support their “old” consoles, they should strive to guarantee, at least, 3rd party support for a while for their platforms — this is nothing but good practice in business.

I hope them to better deal with 3rd parties in this “generation”, once the the Switch is out.

Below I provide some links showing Iwata going on that topic back in 2015:

On Kimishima’s statement: WSJ’s Takashi Mochizuki also used the word “replacement” to address the issue — please see link below. This surely reinforces the use of the word when it comes to Wii U – Switch transition.

      2. It’s gonna take over Wii U’s position as Nintendo’s main home console as the Wii U gets phased out. I don’t see how any other word fits that better than replacement. Now I get not calling it the Wii U’s successor since it’s not got the horrible Wii brand attached to it. As for DS, while GBA games continued to get made, it still replaced that handheld since the DS could actually play GBA games. With that said, you could make a case that the Switch is not a replacement for Wii U since there won’t be any backwards compatibility with Wii U games. BUT if the Switch ends up getting ports of a ton of major Wii U games, it will effectively replace the Wii U whether people want to admit it or not.

        1. Well yes, I agree it’s getting replaced. I’m not saying it isn’t. I was only trying to explain their wording of it, and explaining that Kimishima never said it wasn’t getting replaced. He said that the Switch isn’t a successor.

As for the DS/GBA, I don’t think it was necessarily a replacement since the original GBA models could still play the games being produced for it. Of course, owning a DS meant you wouldn’t need a GBA.

As for ports, even if most of Wii U’s games will be ported to Switch, it will be missing the Gamepad features. Which also rules out certain Wii U games from ever being ported (unless they’re massively re-tooled).

          1. Thankfully, Star Fox Zero is the only one I can think of that would need a complete makeover to work on Switch. Others can just affix a button to certain things the Gamepad did since not all buttons were used on the Gamepad.

    1. Yes, everyone expected it, that’s what happens to consoles. It’s just sad to hear that the Wii U has officially ended now :'(

    2. I’m not sure- I think that is usually the case, but not always. I believe the N64 continued to receive new games until 2003, two full years after the Cube was already out. I think that also happened with original DS before they made only 3DS games.

      1. girls are not allowed in our sacred xbox realm as it must be the way of misoginy as sasori says.
it is interesting how the insignificant one grows a spine, a spine that is going to be removed by the “nigerian meat grinder himsef”.
        oh the satisfaction.

      2. Tooie come here and push that Switch
Sasori needs a make over more than Grunty the rhyming witch.

        1. Nintendo First Order Commander Quadraxis

          ||Like you did with that forgotten garbage Spyglass or whatever its name was and Kinect?…||

          1. Quadraxis, the blind sheep.
the almighty kinect was a failure because it forced us to took our assess off our couches, lord sasori does not approve that.
It was ahead of our time, deal with it.
as soon as the wii u is dead, the purge of Quadraxis will begin.
            Mah body is ready…

    1. While I agree with the first line & the first sentence of the second line, good luck with “burying” Quadraxis. I know you won’t be able to because Quadraxis is awesome but just the same, have fun!

(Shocking! This is the second time today I ended up having to like a comment of someone that is usually a big idiot! Bowler being the first. Heh! Both times are on the same article, too!)

      1. Quadraxis is like a baby trying to milk the dried breast of a camcer whore, so he will never get satisfaction and the final result will be him starving to dead.
A blind sheep runing in circles.
        disgusting if you ask me
May sasori bless your “red ring of death”

          1. Good thing you came along. I read his comment & all I could think of was “What the fuck are you even talking about!?” so I didn’t respond. lol

  3. Switch won’t replace WiiU , so they’re stopping with production of WiiU now that we have the Switch. OK, good to know there’s no replacement going on, and the timing is pure coincidence,.

  4. Nintendo really isn’t a safe bet in the gaming industry. Here you have a company that completely kills off their last gen systems. Sony on the other hand has kept ever console alive into later gens. Heck PS2 lasted over a decade and PS3 online still going strong, while Nintendo killed Wii online literally less than half a year after wii U released. Gonna take a lot of convincing for me to take a bet on Switch. Nintendo just don’t deserve my money the way they treat their home console buyers.

  5. I formatted my Wii U a while ago, just need to box it up and trade it in for the Switch.

It had some really good games but I stopped playing it as soon as I finished LoZ: TPHD (so back around the end of March).

I play my new 3DS almost daily though, I wonder why there isn’t more games using its extra power like Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.

  6. My Wii U sits nicely with the rest of my Nintendo consoles.
NES SNES N64 GameCube Wii WiiU
Even though i talk smack about Nintendo… and i get angry with them, it’s only cause i want them to do better and succeed… it’s kinda like tough love.
But i am a gamer first and a Nintendo fanboy second.. so i also got a sega saturn and a dreamcast and a PS2 and PS3.
I never once bought a XB of any kind.. cause i have a high end PC.. why would i need an XBOX when i can just play games running on direct X on my PC?
As for PS4… so far their is nothing on that thing i want.. and there probably will never be anything i want on it.
I’m waiting to see how the switch information comes out in Jan.
If i like the price point and the features and everything on the switch, i’m getting on for sure.

  7. So I’ll have another console stored with my NES, N64, Gamecube and my handhels 3DS.

The Wii u I liked but I admit Nintendo made a complete mess. Hardly no advertising and simply causing us stress.

Now I’ll wait for the Switch
while I keep rhyming Gruntilda the witch.
