Nintendo has explained the reasoning behind the Switch name in the latest edition of Japanese publication Nintendo Dream. The company also told the magazine why they chose the direction of the highly viewed Nintendo Switch reveal teaser trailer.
“We decided that this name would be the best fit for our product for two reasons. It represents one of the defining features of the Switch, the ability to seamlessly ‘switch’ between the TV screen and Switch’s screen, while also embodying the idea of being a ‘switch’ that will flip, and change the way people experience entertainment in their daily lives.”
“We wanted to show people just how much of an enjoyable difference it will make in their entertainment experiences, by having them see and hear for themselves what it can do in an easy-to-digest manner. It allows people to enjoy a home console experience not only in front of a TV, but in rooms with no TV, or outside altogether. And because the controllers are detachable from the main body of the console, each of its forms offer different play experiences for people to enjoy.”
Good thing too. I was half expecting it to be called the WiiUMii
they said that they will not tie it to the wii brand cuz wii u, while it flopped it had amazing 1st and 2nd party games with a few excellent 3rd party games and ports.

Nintendo Cross, like how Street Fighter X Tekken was supposed to be pronounced Street Fighter cross Tekken. NX was a codename that implied it was a cross between a home console and a handheld. At least that’s how I always interpreted it.

I agree… Wii U, I don’t understand what that is, is it different from the Wii?!? The name confuses me too much! Now I’m going back to my PlayStation 4 that I fully understand isn’t a PlayStation 3…kids! Anyone who couldn’t figure out “quickly” that the Wii U was the next generation system from Nintendo and a HD replacement for the Wii was a complete idiot!

It is just a home console that can be portable. It will have home console games only. What about this you do not understand. You can have a home console experience on the go or you can have just TV gameplay. It is not a handheld just a small form format with an additional part included(the docking station ).

I was expecting the Wii G (Weegee) but I like the name “Nintendo Switch”
This was the first console since the original Wii that didn’t need any explanation for me. The reason for the name is pretty obvious. But…..I still think the Gamecube was the very best console name. It describes perfectly what it is.

a) “we called it the switch because it’s going to be going from your wallet to our bank”
b) ” we called it switch because you are going to make the switch from your ps4/xbox to the nintendo switch.

I would have called it the Nintendo Entertainment Switch.. or NES .. maybe.. NES2.
And i would have made it a much lighter grey like the original NES.
