Nintendo: Nintendo 3DS And Nintendo Switch Are Going To Live Side-By-Side

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is extremely confident that the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Switch will be living side-by-side for quite some time. Fils-Aime also said that the ageing handheld will continue to get key titles developed for it by Nintendo. You can read his full opinions on the matter in the quote below:

What does the launch of Switch mean for 3DS?

Fils-Aime: 3DS has a long life in front of it. We’ve already announced games that will be launching in the first couple quarters of this year. There are a number of big games coming. And in our view, the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Switch are going to live side-by-side. You’re going to be meeting different price points, you’re going to be meeting different types of consumers, you’re going to have the newest, freshest content available on Nintendo Switch, you’ve got a thousand-game library available on Nintendo 3DS, plus some key new ones coming. They’re going to coexist just fine. We’ve done this before, managing two different systems.

I think there’s a sense that Nintendo Switch is a portable device. It is portable. But at its heart, it’s a home console that you can take with you on the go.

            1. They said back then that the DS wouldn’t replace the Game Boy Advance, but it did, anyway.
So the Switch is replacing the Wii U, if the port of Mario Kart and Splatoon sequel weren’t enough.

    1. That would be the dumbest thing they can do. Remember how hard it was for them to bring out enough games for the Wii U and 3DS? It just makes sense to go with one console going forward and putting their all into it.

      1. I know but the way they said its a home console implies well its not the 3ds successor at all…. I also have a very very bad feeling we won’t be getting a full blown pokemon game and it will be a lesser to the 3ds. I hope i am so wrong tho

  1. Obvious PR statement obvious.

I refuse to believe this unless you plan on localizing the other Yo-Kai Watch titles.

  2. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA! XD

Forgive me, got carried away there. You mean like how the Gameboy Advance was going to live side by side with the DS? You mean like how the Switch isn’t a replacement for the Wii U? Stop with the lies, Nintendo. The 3DS is dated and the Switch is mostly portable. Like hell it won’t replace it.

      1. OK, I got to say something. Nintendo isn’t some cult or imperial overlord (Childish Roleplayer locic) I get you like a certain franchise, ok like is an understatement but your a bit over the top your treating the console rivalries like a real war which to be honest is fucking retarded! There isn’t really a console war it’s just fanboys raging that their platform is better which is very childish every console has good and bad points, but fanboys are to stuck up their own asses to admit that. So I say this in the nicest way possible

GROW UP and stop treating this like it’s a war! Real wars are horrible and hurtful things what your doing is just ridiculous

games aren’t weapons you moron they are software and technology made by people so drop the act

  3. Releasing a “true handheld successor” will no doubt leave the Switch in a very bad position. What the fuck would be the point of its portability if they have another “real” handheld? The Switch needs to be an all in one device. Thankfully we’re seeing evidence of this from the Japanese side where they’re making games for Switch that are not too dissimilar from what 3DS got. Nintendo, you have a potential ace in the whole for making the Switch succeed far more than Wii U: announce that the main Pokémon games are coming to it.

      1. Do you ever get sick of being a mindless Nintendo role playing Fanboy that thinks Game Companies are like a religious cult? My guess is no, little advice….. GROW THE FUCK UP MATE! GAME COMPANIES ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY NOT THE CONSUMER AND THE SOONER YOU GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEAD THE SOONER THINGS WILL MAKE MORE SENSE.

Welcome to My Nintendo News! If you don’t like his role playing, do as we’ve told countless others before you to do: ignore him instead of whining about it! Your whining only makes him stronger.

          1. That maybe so but role players are so annoying I have to deal with those idiots at my college and it drives me and the rest of my classmates crazy.

Maybe it’s how certain straight people feel their heterosexuality is threatened when gay people don’t hide being gay so they feel this pathetic need to “defend” their heterosexuality. It’s the classic case of vilifying those that are different from the silly, boring norm.

  4. Two mobiles ? That makes no sense. Of course they’re going to say that until the very last games releases on 3DS. They don’t want to say it’s replacing it until they’ve exhausted all Pokémon sun and moon and future releases.

  5. Sooo why would you want a switch if you have a moblie system already.. Basically this is what a lot of us feared. But then again the 2.5-6 hour battery life I think most people won’t really use the Mobile functionality of it…another gimmic :/ if they do they will still be tethered to walls etc .

  6. Hopefully this is true. I love my 3ds since it’s a system I can actually take in my pocket and go. Switch looks great but I think it’s too big to be truly “portable”

  7. Finally a new console to replace the wii. All the made since then was the wii u controller add on for the original wii.

  8. Mmmmmm……. they always say that when a new console come out and a year later BOOM the old system get killed off by the new one.

  9. Omega Kalas Ridley X3 (Greatness Awaits at Nintendo Switch & Sony PlayStation 4! Come join us in the Light of Darkness!!)

I love my n3DS & I think the Switch is a terrible replacement for handhelds, so I’m hoping this is true. But it’s Reggie saying this… Bleh..!

  10. Actually Best Buy said Nintendo Company is stopping making the Nintendo 3ds console even if they just made the New Nintendo 3ds console game and the same thing with the NIntendo 2ds console. So that mean the Switch is the new console for us now. I just hope we can play our Pokemon games especially since Pokemon Sun and Moon just came out last year in November 18th.

  11. I seriously doubt the 3ds will die out as i think that the new 3ds has only been out a small fraction of what the original 3ds was so no way in hell will they kill off the new 3ds some people on here are just being stupid.

  12. Well, NES lived on for several years after the SNES launched, and sorta kinda served as a budget alternative during that time of gradual, gradual wind down. And on top of this, unlike the 3DS, with its dual screens and 3D, the NES offered no technical benefits over its successor – unless you vastly prefer the crisp, tight clarity of the 2A03’s PSG sound system over the muffly, small-sample-addled [Sony made] SPC700 in the SNES. I’m not sure I would quite so far as to adopt that position myself, but I certainly do not see it as one without any merit, and it is one that some people truly do hold.

So, if it’s positioned as a budget alternative, for those who can’t afford the Switch, or those who feel leery traveling with such an expensive portable that should it get lost, stolen, or damaged would not only deprive them of their portable gaming, but of their home console gaming in one fell swoop – not to mention the 2-screen, 3D thing, then I can see it existing for a time yet.

However, it’s imperative that they don’t undercut and undermine the Switch. This Switch needs to be an “all-in” sort of thing, and so if the Switch is suffering as a result of the 3DS, then I think they need to let it go. Furthermore, even if the Switch does not IMMEDIATELY replace the 3DS, I do feel that it does need to directly be its EVENTUAL replacement later, rather than bringing out another dedicated portable later. That would undermine the Switch so badly.

So I don’t want to see a dedicated 3DS replacement. I want to see them go all-in on the Switch. But for now? For the next year or two, or so? Sure! Why not? In addition to everything I said above, it’s also a huge success and cash cow. Why cut that off before the Switch is fully established and steaming along?

    Cheers!

  13. Good, because as far as I’m concerned the 3ds and to a lesser extent wiiu will be the only Nintendo gaming I do over the next couple years. Trust me, it pains me to say that. I see the argument about how the 3ds could potentially cannibalize the switch. However, the Switch has huge shoes to fill. For one, I can say with confidence it won’t match wii sales and it will have an up hill battle to match or surpass 3ds sales.

If it turns out that demand for the 3ds or a 3ds like handheld gaming experience out strips the switch then to me it’s not the 3ds that needs to go it will be the switch that needs to go and be replaced by a true handheld successor. Which has always been nintendos bread and butter. Its something they do extremely well, even when they make baffling decisions like releasing the 3ds with one analog stick and pricing it so high.

You see, once all the initial launch hype dies off and the first 4-5 million units sell the switch will find itself in dangerous territory. I love the hybrid concept but in practice it will inevitably face an identity crises. Due to its very nature the Switch cannot and will not excel at either being the best home console or the best handheld. It will soon be in its own niche market. So where does that leave the consumer who wants the best handheld experience? Either purchasing a 3ds or whatever the competition has filled the gap with. And do I even have to ask where does that leave the consumer who wants the best home console experience? Yes this is a rhetorical question because you should know the answer.

So my friends, Nintendo is riding a pretty nice hype wave at the moment and will see short term benefits from this. Since I love their games so much I hope they succeed. Yet I can see the writing on the wall and I cross my fingers that the execs at Nintendo can also see what’s coming. I certainly won’t hold my breath though, since the level of stubbornness and arrogance never ceases to astound me.
