Nintendo confirmed that the Nintendo Switch Online service would launch on September 18th in North America, with a UK launch happening the following day. Well, preparations have to be made, and Nintendo has just confirmed that the Nintendo Switch eShop will be undergoing maintenance on September 18th at 5pm Pacific Time, or 8pm Eastern. The Switch eShop will not be available for “up to 3 hours”.
After the maintenance is done, version 6.0.0 will be available in the Switch eShop, and you will be able to purchase a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. However, there is a catch. According to Nintendo, “it will no longer be possible to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user”. More details on the service will be announced at tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct.
In preparation for the upcoming Nintendo Switch Online launch, Nintendo Switch eShop is scheduled for maintenance starting at 5pm PT on 9/18, and will be unavailable for up to 3 hours. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. https://t.co/dZXaTFvHb4

So do we need the online service just to continue making transactions on the Switch’s eShop?
I doubt it coz there will still be a lot of people buying stuff on eshop that are not bothered about online gaming.
You don’t. You can access the eShop without a subscription.
No, this was written in a bit of a mess. You need to upgrade to OS version 6.0.0 to keep using the e shop though.
I reckon a smash bundle in time for Christmas with a download code for a years subscription to online Nintendo is a definite.
Probably not a years worth… Japan has bundles with memberships and they all have a 3 month sub, im guessing (if they do include a sub) it would be around that amount.
Looks like things are about to get really interesting.
