Rare says that they have been working with the Smash Bros. team “since last year”

Rare’s blog saw a new entry yesterday, where they discussed their E3 2019 adventures. Among the topics was Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which will see Banjo-Kazooie as a new DLC fighter this fall. They began by saying that “we have been listening, as have the folks at Nintendo, and it was a very proud moment for us finally NOT to have to keep this a secret any more and share the glorious news far and wide”.

Rare also said that “it was a joy to see just how warmly the news was received. It’s been a tightly kept secret but we’ve been collaborating closely with the Smash team on this crossover since last year, on everything from movesets to musical choices – and while a core group of folks at Rare worked on this, we have to give a special shout out to our own Paul Cunningham who has been our point man on getting everything about Banjo and Kazooie’s appearance just right. Your favourite duo are in very safe (albeit fighty) hands and we honestly cannot wait for everyone to get their game on in the incredible Smash universe”.

  1. Honestly, the DLC for this game is DLC done right. Every character has been very unexpected so far (except the Hero) and I can’t wait to see even more!

    1. And to be fair, the only reason why Hero was predicted was because of a slip up in the DLC data files

      1. I’m gonna be honest, I’m pretty confused why they didn’t call them the Luminary, the Hero, Erdrick, and Solo. They’re just ALL the Hero. Why.

    2. Well, as far the Smash Bros series is doing very well with the sells and reviews, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has 2 DLC characters left. Some fans expected Shantae to show up in the game as DLC but for me, i know its not gonna happen anyway.

    3. @WetWaluigi,
The Hero was VERY unexpected for me.
I just bought 2 Dragon Quest games for the first time ever, and suddenly Dragon Quest XI gets announced for the Switch, and now the Hero is announced for Smash Ultimate. I guess it’s my year for Dragon Quest. But, doesn’t this Hero guy have a name?

      1. Yeah, the Luminary. I’m saying he was expected by a lot of people seeing as how Dragon Quest is the third best selling jrpg franchise in the world, next to Pokemon (characters in Smash) and Final Fantasy (Cloud is there too). Or at least he wasn’t as unexpected as Joker for me.

  2. Well that goes without saying. The DLC was decided since last year afterall, right?

  3. I am so glad they didn’t use the Nuts and Bolts design on Banjo-Kazooie. That design was ca-bluey. Now when is Nintendo going to spill the secret on Olimar and Louie?

  4. It just seems so strange Microsoft gave the greenlight for Rare and Nintendo to work on this together for us Banjo-Kazooie fans. Now Klungo I ate, now come wash my pots and pans.

    1. True, but Smash can be credited with renewed interest in game series. After Pit was included in Brawl, a lot of people thought “who is Pit?” and found he is from Kid Icarus- a series that, at the time, hadn’t seen a new game in nearly two decades. Only a few years after Brawl, KI Uprising was shown off, using the redesign Pit received for Brawl and ending the drought (though to be fair, it looks like it’s about to enter another one lol).

In a more personal case, I had no idea who Shulk was when he was announced for Sm4sh- I later wound up maining him. Then when I learned his game Xenoblade Chronicles was coming to the New 3DS, I picked up a copy, and it’s one of the best JRPGs I’ve ever played. So yeah, Smash has a way of working wonders for the series and characters it features.
