Splatoon producer reveals Splatoon 3 isn’t in development yet

Splatoon series director Hisashi Nogami has recently chatted with Japanese magazine Famitsu about his team’s plans for the future. Mr. Nogami told the publication in the new interview that development on the next game in the super-fun Splatoon series hasn’t yet commenced. The team is currently busy developing Animal Crossing: New Horizons for the Nintendo Switch which is due next year. Here’s what he said:

Feature additions are over at version 5.0.

Weapon and stage additions as well as Splatfests are over. Balance adjustments and Monthly League Matches will continue.

Splatoon 2’s production started moving right after 1 was released. Now we also had production for Octo Expansion so we’re fully focused on the updates, and we still haven’t thought of the future.

For future plans, we’ll think of them after everything is over.

We’re not yet at a phase where we can make a promise, but we’d like to return the favour in some sort of way to many people who have supported us. If you continue to support us, it might turn into reality.

    1. Agreed plus animal crossing horizon is still being work on, I think people forget that team does work on different franchises spaltoon 3 will probably show up in the next 2 or 3 years though since they still will most likely want to continue to profit off of 2 some more

  1. Splatoon 3 for PC :P
Splatoon the first shooter in a very long time with a unique style, but it’s a shame there’s no way to play it with a mouse. If it was playable on dedicated servers with a mouse and keyboard with a few more modes, I’d love to play it, and there’d probably be a lot more people who would as well.

  2. They can’t promise anything because they don’t have any final splatfest results and therefore don’t have any data to be able to shape the next games vision.

They say they don’t have plans but they chose the final splatfest theme for a reason, naturally, they do have a vague idea of what they wanted to do with the next game depending on the outcome.

Right now the team is focused on animal crossing New horizons. And when that ends, Nogami probably needs a break because that will be 4 years of game development pretty much non-stop.

Splatoon 2 sold 10 million copies and counting up until now and the games lobbies are going strong, the playerbase is not deteriorating so there is no need to create a third at this point. I really want a third, but the last thing i want is the franchise to start flopping because we were too hasty with the release cycle.

I want splatoon 3 to be immense, as successful as it was Splatoon 2 was poor, half of it’s content updates weren’t new, the original story implemented nothing great until the final bit. If anything the octo expansion added dlc was the best part lmao. Salmon run is new but an acquired taste. It’s only useful for grinding and a change of scene no proper ranking systems or major point to it.

I want splatoon 3 to have a strong story mode that complete stamps octo expansion into the mud, 4 superb idols with a crazy chaos theme or dictating order theme, the salmonids lore expansion. Better gimmicks, more intricate level design. Intense bosses, extended length tbh. I want the multiplayer to feel refreshed with stronger completely new maps, a WAY BETTER RANKING SYSTEM CAUSE THIS ONE IS CURRENTLY SHOCKINGLY TERRIBLE. New game modes, scrap the current ones, build new ones. Ditch a ton of the old weapons like gamefreak ditched national dex, who cares if one weapons someones favourite, scrap it in favour of new weapon styles.

It sounds a lot but it shouldn’t be. Splatoon 2 was essentially splatoon 1 deluxe. I really want nintendo to put heart and soul into 3 because they have the fanbase to, they have the context and climax up to it from splatoon 2’s release and i just dont want them to rush it due to small development time. Splatoon 2 is great but only had 1 year of development, imagine if it had 2 or 3..

  3. Looks like Splatoon 3 is not a thing yet. So i think Splatoon developers is working on other projects like a new Animal Crossing game for 2020. looks like we have to find out if this game be in development for next gen Nintendo console.

    1. And a mew story mode o3o and new fame modes. Probably do more with a third installment then most shooters improve on between yearly releases

  4. Why? They ported it over from Wii U last year, they don’t need to worry about making a successor, just let 1 million people enjoy it since only like 20,000 copies were sold on Wii U due to being a commercial failure with less than 1 million systems even being sold. Now, more than 20,000 can enjoy it, so let 1 million people play it before you start working on a Switch one!
