Shigeru Miyamoto was barely involved with Paper Mario: The Origami King

Eurogamer Germany has recently had the opportunity to chat with Paper Mario: The Origami King producer Kensuke Tanabe and director, Masahiko Nagaya. Both confirmed that they have had almost absolute control over the franchise since Paper Mario: Color Splash for the legacy Wii U system and that the legendary developer, Shigeru Miyamoto, was barely involved in the development of more recent entries in the long-established series. Here’s what they told the online publication:

“Ever since Paper Mario: Color Splash, we have almost complete control over the creative direction of the game. Mr. Miyamoto checked in on development once or twice, but there were no specific requests to make changes. However, all character designs have to pass a check by our IP team, which is pretty strict. Nonetheless, we were allowed to change the outfits of some Toads in this game.”

Producer, Kensuke Tanabe

“Mr. Tanabe is correct about us having complete creative control over the crucial elements of the game. We were constantly checking whether or not our approach was moving too far away from the Mario universe. During development, we were also careful not to disappoint the expectations of fans of the core Mario series. As mentioned, there are strict guidelines related to the use of characters. It’s a challenge to emphasize the unique aspects of the game while still adhering to the guidelines.”

Director, Masahiko Nagaya

    1. They actually don’t have to do what fans want otherwise it would be a fluster cluck like how Sonic Forces got OC because Sega did what fans wanted. What they CAN do is take feedback to heart.

      1. Especially when people are always complaining about how Large companies just make games off of stats and social media posts instead of what they want to make like with like with Indie devs.

    2. I’ve never understood the whole paper complaint. TTYD is full of paper gimmicks and world building and you don’t here people saying it made it worse than the original. People act like Paper Gimmicks and RPG elements are mutual exclusive for whatever reason even though they aren’t.

  2. Im playing the game now it’s really good in terms of story and world but the combat is just terrible. Theres no sense of motivation to fight since they don’t have any leveling up mechanism so it becomes a chore to get through.

This is why many games implement leveling systems so that the player can feel a sense of reward with progression. It’s like gaming 101 at this point, why would they omit it? i attribute it to a lack of experience and awareness.

    1. They don’t want to force you fighting the enemy. I understand what you said about fighting for increasing your level but at the same time you have to waste so much time doing fights while an RPG game without leveling up can be beaten faster than the normal ones. This is just an opinion.

      1. The matches are unavoidable in most cases. I try and avoid them as much as possible trust me, I really don’t want to fight lol theres just lots of enemies around and many you can’t run away from.

I’m saying if they are gna make them unavoidable at least give me something to look forward to, that’s the only reason I said the leveling bit lol

    1. It was bc of Miyamotos heavy involvement with Sticker Star tht caused them to turn Paper Mario into an Adventure series.
And since he had lil to no input on Origami King, the humor and story are muuuuuuch better; just like the 1st 3 games. Combat is still poor though, thts really the only bad thing about the game.

    1. Then u wuld hav gotten another Sticker Star. The worst entry in the entire series.
It was bc of his heavy involvement in tht game tht turned the series into an Adventure genre.
Bc originally the devs were goin to go back to the RPG mechanics of TTYD and improve on tht, but Miyamoto said “No” and wanted it to concentrate more on “fun for everyone”.
