Nintendo cancels Splatoon 2 NA Open Finals livestream

There’s been a lot of frustration from fans in recent days surrounding Nintendo’s decision to put a stop to a Super Smash Bro. Melee competitive tournament. Recent happenings saw the company send a cease and desist order to The Big House, the longest-running Smash tournament in the US just the other week. The reason for this was because Nintendo refused to support a tournament that saw illegally copied version of the game being used for the event. The news quickly gained traction online with the hashtags #SaveSmash and #FreeMelee trending worldwide. Nintendo even went out of the way to release a statement to Polygon explaining the reason behind it while highlighting the fact that The Big House did not cooperate.

Now, Nintendo has canceled the livestream for the Splatoon 2 North American Open which was scheduled to take place over this weekend. ‘SlimyQuagsire’ on Twitter has shared a small statement from Splatoon 2’s official tournament Discord server which you can view below. Speculation behind the cancellation of the livestream points towards the names of the winning teams that were submitted for the tournament; many of who chose Melee-inspired names for their teams.

Nintendo states in the Discord that the livestream was cancelled due to “unexpected executional challenged”, but many fans think very much otherwise. The livestream may have been cancelled, but thankfully, the tournament has gone ahead as planned.

  1. I’m not really interested in any of these tournaments myself but I wish Nintendo would just let these things go sometimes. They end up damaging themselves way more than any of the stuff they are reacting to would

They can’t close an eye on some things. I understand the fact they had to stop that Smash Melee competitive because they wanted to use a different version of the game that has some features not present in the original game. If Nintendo allowed then they allow people to do tournaments with modded version of their games.

We all know how Nintendo is when it’s about fan games, moddedgames etc. They basically destroy everything that isn’t made by them expect for some exception like animated videos, fanarts anything that isn’t correlated to games.

I might be an annoying person but I’m on the side of Nintendo.. If you want to use this modded version of Melee then use it but for your private events.

      1. The smash community imo is so weird, as much as I want to be upset with nintendo for some of the stupid decisions they make, I would actually have to admit their actually in the right here, smash community is problematic, and its honestly so weird that most people won’t even admit it, I mean this is also the same year with all the undercover pedo/abusive smash players stuff came out (seems like everyone forgot about that huh) I’m not even surprise that nintendo has been trying to distance themselves from incidents like that, I have to remember that majority of smash fans feel entiled to alot of things.

Smash fans should understand what is playing the original version of the game vs a modded version.

Also, from what I have seen, this melee tournament was a public event organized with Nintendo. How the hell people thinked about Nintendo letting them using a modded version of the game? This will never happen.

Nice to see shitty irresponsible journalism alive and well, but then again the name of the site has “Nintendo” in it.

    1. The actual critique here is the news is Nintendo Cancels Splatoon 2 Event but the article is predominantly about Smash Bros. The whole first paragraph didn’t even mention Splatoon.

It’d be like reporting case numbers of COVID but the entire article is about how Bill Gates is releasing nano machines into the water supply.

Seriously, this is a bad look for the Smash Bros community and news site reporting on it. Not everything is a conspiracy about Melee.
