The Wii U firmware has been updated to version 5.5.6 U

No, your eyes are absolutely not deceiving you at all. The Wii U may be all but a memory now, but that hasn’t stopped Nintendo from releasing rare and random firmware updates for the console. Tonight is no exception, with a Wii U firmware update releasing within the past hour.

If you still play on a Wii U, and you still want to download updates, doing so will put your Wii U at version 5.5.6 U. The update’s release may be surprising, but the contents of the official patch notes are not. They’re very small, with Nintendo only saying that “further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience”.

  1. Mmm they still doing stability improvements for the Wii U and 3DS. I still don’t get why are they still doing updates on both Wii U and 3DS consoles after there were discontinued worldwide.

    1. 3DS makes sense, it’s their highest selling handheld ever, but the failed WiiU makes no sense, it’s been discontinued for like 10 years now.

  2. Ah. The ‘kill the eshop cards’ update. Probably the next to last update for the Wii U. The last will be the ‘kill the eshop’ update next Spring.

As for what I’d like from an update? Games still hang looking for Miiverse or trying to connect to other dead online services (Wii U Sports Club is the worst), would be nice if Nintendo bothered with a minimal QoL protocol network update to immediately deny these connections. But no. Let’s force it to wait to time out.

  3. “If you still play on a Wii U”- that’s a joke, right? No one plays this thing anymore, because no one even had it- it was a commercial failure, remember? Nintendo erased it from their own history when they released Switch just a couple years later, it’s why Switch is their current 8th generation system, doing extremely well during the 9th generation too!

    1. I have three of them, thank you, and why would I buy games again that I already have? Hence I play on it. It makes for a fun 6-player mario kart. Plus naturally they are much better to mod than a Switch, and play Wii-games and gamecube games when modded. That’s why you would play on one. For chrissakes, people still play their super nintendos. Of course we still play our Wii-Us.

    2. I know plenty of people with a Wii U. It was one of the more popular consoles as it features backwards (including GameCube) and multiplayer capabilities (Try playing 8 player smash on a PS or EggsBox for example) the competitors don’t have.
For high end graphics and single player gaming, there is always the PC.

The Switch is the console that started the 9th generation. Once again, a completely new design, merging mobile gaming and stationary consoles – far ahead of Nintendo’s competitors in terms of capabilities and value.

  4. The Wii U hasn’t received an Update of 5.5.6 on my Wii U it’s still 5.5.5 and I can still add funds to the eShop also I wish Hitman 3, DDLC Plus and Friday Night Funkin’ was on disc for Wii U and Xbox 360

    1. Well they managed to ignore that mine was soft-modded and updated it anyway even with a block. Not sure how they managed that.
