Nintendo’s final announcement from today’s Nintendo Direct answered 2 questions for a lot of Zelda fans. At long last, Nintendo has revealed the name for the sequel of The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. We also got a specific release date.

Nintendo has confirmed that the game will be called The Legenda of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom. The game will be coming to the Nintendo Switch on May 12th, 2023. Nintendo of America also tweeted the news, so it can be seen down below.

  1. That explains the water droplet in a previous trailer for the game. Reveals nothing of the story, though, like what was rumored.

Anyway, finally a name & release date. Now we can stop calling it BotW2. Lol Also, I very much love the name. Can’t wait to see how it ties into the story other than a water droplet.

    1. Yeah, I remember them saying the title would tell too much about the story. Maybe it has to do with Wind Waker’s plot? I could see how old Hyrule being flooded would be… idk… tears of a kingdom-ish.

        1. That’s true. But now I’m thinking it has to do with the Sheikah since they have that eye with the tear-mark. Plus, with the logo having the broken Master Sword in a sort of Sheikah-tech style… it might be more about Sheikah tech or something? I don’t know.

iirc there was a dark time in Hyrule before Ocarina of Time where the royal family tortured people in the shadow temple or area under the well or something. Maybe they awaken these lingering spirits when exploring underneath Hyrule. I don’t know. Just thinking out loud.

          1. That would be interesting. Yeah, the Royal kingdom of Hyrule tortured people of war back during OoT, but it would be really interesting if those same spirits persisted for millions of years. At this point in the timeline we have no idea how far away in legend OoT’s time is; Urbosa even talks about Ganon as being rumored to be a Gerudo. OoT is so far into the past that the queen of the gerudo has no idea if Ganondorf was a Gerudo. Let that sink in.

I like the idea that those spirits have persisted this long, but I’m not sure it would make sense for them to be the ultimate villain of the game. Having them exist would definitely flesh out the lore though, so I’d welcome them as an addition in that sense

            1. Considering Urbosa did mention that (and she made it sound like she believes in the rumors, least it sounded like it to me), clearly the truth didn’t completely fade away & was passed down as rumors and (pun intended) legends. If her & the other champions reappear, she’ll find out the truth (if she didn’t believe the rumors to be true) when mummy Ganondorf starts causing chaos.

    2. I pray it actually has an deep involved story and doesn’t have one that felt like an weak uncompelled afterthought the first one had…

Hope this one follows arcs like oot mm tp wind waker and ss

        1. Omfg yes!!! The team worked on the Xenoblade games and it pulled over world music and boss music disproving that excuse they gave for not putting music in. Xc2 and 3 have amazing sound tracks I hope we don’t get 50 sec jingles on loop

I know I sound like I’m ragging on but I hope it’s solves those issues I had

          1. Music aside, the only other issue I have is how quickly weapons break. If they don’t remove the breaking altogether (which would be fine), I hope they at least make it take longer for weapons to break. The ability to repair broken weapons (instead of losing them forever) would also be nice. Something similar to Witcher 3’s system.

  2. Why can’t we have relevant titles anymore? “Tears of the Kingdom” sounds as generic and nondescriptive as “Breath of the Wild”

    1. Breath of the Wild IS descriptive.

It’s called “Breath” because it’s alluding to a “breath of fresh air” – both in terms of the idiom that means “thing that constitutes a refreshing change” (i.e. the gameplay), but also because it’s an open-air game (a new genre of open world games).
“Wild” speaks for itself – this version of Hyrule is completely wild. The wilderness has taken over Hyrule and settlements are few and far between.
