Sakurai says team stopped including CG cutscenes in Smash Bros due to leaks

It appears that the reason the computer-generated cutscenes and movies in the Smash Bros franchise stopped is because the team feared leaks. The news was revealed by series creator Masahiro Sakurai in a new episode of his YouTube show, which gives gamers a glimpse behind the scenes of game development. Sakurai says he was all for the CGI movies initially, but he quickly discovered that some overseas media outlets were leaking the footage, which ruined the surprise, so they eventually put a stop to them. Sakurai also says that social media can be bad for story-driven games, given all the leaks.

  1. I completely get what he’s saying, but that sort of thing is just inevitable in this day and age. I couldn’t really care less if it gets leaked or not post-release, just leave it to the fans if they want to spoil themselves or not.

    1. Couldn’t agree more. The pre-launch window is temporary, but the CG scenes last forever. Nobody is going to argue for instance that the cutscenes in Subspace Emissary didn’t benefit the single player experience to a huge degree. It’s a campaign you can go back to and enjoy long after the hype train ended. Seems a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water

  2. I hate spoilers as well so I don’t blame him. Some will say that’s a cop out but it’s not, spoilers sucks.

    1. He would never call Mario, it’s barely discussed but Sakurai hates Mario (especially Luigi) with a burning passion and that’s one of those things that is widely known but no one wants to talk about.

  3. On the one hand, I get where he’s coming from; having your hard work leak out all over the internet sounds like a crushing blow.

On the other hand, we live in a day and age where leaks are about as common as can be: if the work is good, peaks won’t tarnish anything

  4. At least somebody finally understands the whole reasoning about the leaks. This is exactly why Nintendo pull the plug on many popular streamers and games on YouTube and Twitch. It’s like people giving Sakurai a blow to the head.

  5. This isn’t new information.

It’s just petty and disappointing, especially since we’re the ones being punished.

  6. If someone cares enough to not see leaks they’ll have preventative measures to keep themselves spoiler free. I get why it’s frustrating for a creative like Sakurai to have hard work “spoiled”, but that’s just how this era of media is. It can suck, but it comes down to player/viewer to pick and choose how they go about things. Outright removing cool features because of that was and always will be disappointing.

Oh well. At least Sakurai has also stated in the past that the removal of the CGI cutscenes gave them the budget to create the Fighter Reveal trailers, and those trailers have an appeal all on their own; they’re arguably even more impactful too. Just looking at online culture post Everyone Is Here and the Fighter Reveals, everyone loves those

    1. Nintendo systems tend to have the least amount of technical security, and Nintendo games tend to be among the highest sought-after products for hackers and data miners. There are only so many “preventative measures” you can take when your hardware has easy exploits that are taken advantage of.

  7. Still a very stupid excuse. Next time, just don’t bother with a story mode. Shoulda just brought Melee’s Event Mode back because World of Light was just that but with a map connecting them instead of it being a list.
