At CES 2024, an unexpected and somewhat unsettling appearance stole the spotlight as an AI-powered hologram of Nintendo’s iconic mascot, Mario, took center stage. The hologram, created by Proto Hologram, was showcased within large box-like structures designed for interactive conversations. However, the unlicensed and unofficial nature of this creation has now been admitted by Proto Hologram. Surprisingly, the Mario hologram was initially intended as part of a collaboration with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), an advocacy group for individuals over the age of 50. The aim was to demonstrate how AI holograms could potentially combat loneliness in the elderly. The choice of Mario and the execution of the hologram, featuring a poorly-voiced and dead-eyed 3D model, raised eyebrows and left many questioning the unconventional approach.
Footage from CES attendees revealed the stiff animation of the plumber, responding with generic answers and rough lip movements, accompanied by a robotic voice. As the footage gained traction on social media, Proto Hologram responded to the inquiries, emphasizing that the AI hologram was an unfinished proof of concept tested for a client, not intended for commercial release. Importantly, both AARP and Nintendo were disassociated from the inadvertent showcasing.
