Mother series creator tells fans to talk to Nintendo about Mother 3 western release

Shigesato Itoi is most known for being the creator of the Mother series, also known as EarthBound. The series hasn’t had any new entries in many years, but it has developed quite a following since. Many Nintendo fans have been asking for the game to be localized in western regions, but Nintendo hasn’t been interested.

The fan demand for a localization of the game got louder today, thanks to the news that Japan would be getting the game on their Game Boy Advance Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack library. Some fans even contacted Itoi himself on social media about the matter. Itoi has responded to fans, saying that they need to talk to Nintendo about it and not him. You can see a tweet relaying the news from Itoi down below.

  1. We gotta get a Mother fan on the shareholders board so that they can ask a question about Mother 3 or the series in general like what happened with F-Zero

  2. Honestly, if you really care about that game, you have already played it by now, with a better translation than Nintendo will ever deliver. Don’t see why people are so mad sometimes.

    1. Just like people being mad that Bloodborne ain’t ever getting a 60fps patch? Y’all should have played Bloodborne instead of wating for a patch that’s never gonna happen.

      1. Yup. I played Bloodborne from veginning to end and even the DLC and cannot understand some people’s obsesion with wanting it to be something it does not need to be

    2. There’s a lot of GBA games I’ve already played… and I happily replayed them on Switch. It’s like a big GBA, after all.

    3. Oh my god, I know you guys don’t give a damn about mother, people want it localized not because they wanna play it but because they want more people to experience and enjoy the mother series how is that so hard to understand? You guys want to lick Nintendo’s boot so hard that you want to defend the fact that they can’t translate a 20 year old game??? Cmoooooon

      1. Just as Mr. said, if you wanna play it, there are already means to do so.
No one is licking nintendo’s boots. if that were the case, they wouldn’t be promoting emulation/fan translations. But we are simply aware that nintendo will never do something about it. Why beg to a company? We are better than that.

        1. There is not a “legal” means to play it though. Not everyone wants to commit piracy. I want to play it, but I don’t want to go to jail. I want to play it on a gaming console and not a computer.

          1. “There is not a “legal” means to play it though.”
            1. Create a Japanese Nintendo account.
            2. Download the Japanese NSO software.
            3. Profit.

            1. Yeah because I will totally know what all the characters say, what all the attack commands are and any other vital information about the game like where to go. 🤷‍♂️😂

              1. You do know you can just look at a guide while you play the Japanese version of the game, right?

Seriously, why is the Mother fandom so afraid of trying new things?

              2. I mean, you can always look up transcripts of the fan translation, the movelist itself and stuff like that on the internet while you play it on the Japanese NSO software.

          2. Dude, you won’t go to jail for playing a pirated game.

And if you wanna do it legaly, you can purchase the cartridge second hand (GOOD LUCK WITH THAT), dump it to your computer and patch it with the fan translation. THIS IS 100% LEGAL.

            1. Sounds legit. Yeah because I totally have all the necessary equipment to pull that off and all the programs installed and just missing the cart 🙄.

              1. If you want everything spoonfed, then yeah, there is no way to play it. Sorry Marth, you will miss out on one of best games ever made :,(

Now if you excuse me, I’ll continue playing mother 3 in english. Didn’t have to buy a cart, and patching the rom didn’t even take me more than 2 minutes. I have a NSO+ membership so Nintendo still has my money 🤷‍♂️. Everyone is happy.

                  1. Dude, no one is gonna play it in japanese. If we all understood japanese or be willing to play stuck to a guide and a translated transcript then this entire conversation wouldn’t exist. Sorry.

                    1. Wow, seems like my suspicions were right. The Mother fandom is full of cowards who don’t want to live life to the fullest.

  3. It’s not up to the fans to ask the company Mr Itoi…. Just as the company is not obliged to listen to them if it deems the project not profitable

    1. Oh yeah, translating one of the most important rpg’s ever made is “not profitable” surely that wouldn’t boost expansion pack sales to the roof!

  4. After Tentri’s comments made me lose brain cells (don’t all Mother 3 localization beggars have that impact), I figured I should remind y’all of two things:
    1. You can download the Japanese NSO software for the authentic experience.
    2. The reason why Nintendo is iffy about localizing Mother 3 is simple — COPYRIGHTED MUSIC. Sure, they were offered to use the fan translation, but working with fans isn’t as easy as SEGA makes it look, and there would be a lot of legal issues behind that too.
So here’s my message to you, Mother 3 localization beggars: either face your fears and actually try something new for once in your basement dwelling lives, or don’t contribute to internet society at all.
