GamesIndustry website journalist Christopher Dring has posted on social media platform X that he heard industry whispers regarding something Switch 2 related happening this month. Nintendo has so far kept extremely quiet on the subject of the successor to the popular Nintendo Switch console, only promising to share more information on the device before March 2025. As always this is just a rumour, so we will have to wait and see what transpires.
Update: Andy Robinson from VGC has also heard the same, but wouldn’t bet on it.

Would be a bold move, unveiling a new console on the brink of the release of a new Zelda title. I’d say they would wait for at least the end of October.
It’s a top down game smaller in scale than a main 3d game…. No different than triforce heroes coming out and Nintendo dropping a switch system tease
Yeah, maybe, but why would they? If it is going to release in April there is plenty of time from October onward to promote it.
But time will tell :)
I’ve compiled a list of reasons why I doubt it’ll be announced in September. Doesn’t mean it isn’t possible, but it would surprise me.
Probably the most telling reason is the fact they said the next device would be announced by the end of this fiscal year. As Nintendo is a Japanese company, their fiscal year ends at the end of February. This means they have beyond this year to make the announcement. Additionally they commonly have a Direct in February. So it makes too much sense they would use the February Direct next year to make this announcement.
Switch sales will tank the moment the Switch’s successor is announced. I cannot picture Nintendo undercutting the final holiday season of one of the best selling platforms in video game history. They’re going to want to ride the wave of its success throughout the most profitable months of the year.
There are too many games still coming to the platform. There are 7+ first party games and many 3rd party and indie games as well. Announcing the next platform before most of these games have a chance to release would be shooting themselves in the foot. Why put all that time and effort into this strong Switch line-up that continues into next year if it just gets overshadowed by the next platform and its next gen games that will undoubtedly blow Switch games out of the water?
To combat the scalper situation, Nintendo claimed they would take more time to ensure they would meet demand. See, at the start of this generation the semiconductor shortage caused many problems with the launch of the PS5 and the X-Box Series X/S. This delayed the progress of the new generation by about 2 years, where you could only get a hold of these devices by either being the quickest online buyer in the west or by paying scalpers an egregious amount of money. We may be past the worst of this, but Nintendo doesn’t want to climb the same broken ladder upon launch, so they’re taking the extra time to build up enough product to counter this outcome.
Nintendo also needs time to build up a roster of games to debut with the launch of the new platform. Last I checked, they still have a few remasters/rereleases coming to the Switch meaning they’re still buying time to polish off that first line of games to the point they would be confident to show the public.
And lastly the Switch is on the road to be the best platform of all time. Currently it sits at number 3 but very closely behind the number 1 & 2 spots. Imagine if the next device doesn’t come out for another 7 months. It would potentially give the Switch the time it needs to make it to number 1. This could be used in advertisements hyping people up for the next gaming machine. Imagine it has backwards compatibility and they claim you can bring your Switch library over to the new platform and have access to the best selling console in history. That’s a good way to move units off the shelves at launch.
They never send by the end of the fiscal year. They said during the fiscal year.
By the end of the fiscal year or during the fiscal year, no matter how you say it, it means the same thing. Point is they promised they would announce it before the next fiscal year starts. This gives them till the end of February to announce the next platform. It could be announced this month like everyone else believes and it also means it could be announced sometime in February.
I don’t think the switch sales will tank is a good reason for them not to showcase since they already basically have been tanking way before they made the announcement of the new system, price cut will literally be the only way I see for them to reach their goal for the next fiscal imo
Honestly I don’t think most of your stuff applies here. First of all the fiscal year runs April-March, so February isn’t a factor – the fiscal year end on the last day of March 2025. Plus they only said they would announce it before the end of the fiscal year, that doesn’t mean it will release in the fiscal year. It’s still very likely that the console won’t release until, at the very earliest, April 2025 (but will probably be later than that).
Most consumers who are still buying Switches are not gaming enthusiasts. The news of a successor console probably won’t even reach the minds of people who are still potential Switch customers. I don’t think sales will tank as soon as the new console is announced.
As for the scalper situation, Nintendo themselves has already commented on that and said that they plan to have more units produced so as to avoid a shortage. If rumours are to be believed, Nintendo delayed the console specifically to have more software and haardware ready to go at a later date.
I stand corrected. You’re right it is till the end of March not February like I thought. That said they said they would announce it during the fiscal year, they never said anything about releasing the platform within that time. For all we know it could release late summer next year.
I agree they were already on the decline and its why Nintendo is preparing for the next device as we speak. That being said people are still buying Switch devices. Either to replace an old one, to upgrade from a non-OLED, or even to give one to someone that hasn’t yet had one yet like a parent getting their kid their first video game device. Once it starts becoming public knowledge a new device is coming all these potential sales will cease. Why would they do that right before the holiday season, it makes no sense. And even more baffling is this rumor suggests the new device will be announced this month right around the time the new Zelda game comes out. Talk about timing that makes no sense, yeah, let’s announce the next platforms replacement right before our big holiday game has a chance to shine. I’m sure there’s no consequences with a move like that.
You literally just reiterated what I already said about moving back the next devices debut, which also further supports a later announcement too.
Why is everyone so convinced this month is the month we’ll hear something? I’m excited too, but it makes literally no sense. They’d be shooting themselves in the foot for the holidays and kill the hype for all the upcoming games they have on the way to the Switch still.
Yeah, I am wrong about the fiscal year thing I admit. I never said anything about it releasing though, my entire post is about the logic of it being announced in February rather than this month. I agree it’ll release later. I think you misunderstood my word choice.
There are people still buying Switch devices right now. The numbers are declining, but announcing the device right before the holiday games even have a chance to breath would be like digging your own grave, why announce it right around the release of a new Zelda game? Switch sales will tank and Nintendo is still seeing decent sales even in its current decline.
Yes, Nintendo said they would push back the release so they have enough units to counter scalpers. You’re just repeating what I said, again.
Allow me to clarify this. I’m stating that the next device is more likely to be announced in February when they have their February Direct. Then release the thing sometime in the mid/late summer. It seems as though there is a confusion here because most of your post makes it seem like I’m buying into the September announcement when literally the exact opposite is happening. Re-read my post, the entire thing is me predicting an early 2025 announcement and listing all the reasons I believe doing so this year doesn’t make much business sense.
Why did it order my responses like this? It looks like I responded to the guy above me twice, but only the second one was directed at his comment. My other comment was directed at someone above his comment. This is too weird, hope people see this post and piece together who the intended response was for.
go i hope so, im dying to see how this thing will look like. hope it’s not way bigger than the og switch
Calling it now, they’ll announce it’s going to be shown off in October via a ‘Switch 2 Nintendo Direct’, that will be a brief trailer and overview of the console lasting ~14 minutes, that teases a handful of games similar to the way the Switch 1 did
🤫
bro’s larping as a nintendo insider
This is one of the funniest things ive ever seen lmao
The guy doesn’t strain… Nintendo leaked the video of the switch in September 2017….and if nothing happens, we’ll hear him blather on with an excuse like: “Microsoft asked Nintendo to wait for the presentation of TES 6.” …
I think you mean 2016
October would be the best option for a reveal date for the system.
It looks like there’s a buzz in the gaming community about possible news on the Switch 2 this month, according to Chris Dring. While Nintendo has remained tight-lipped and won’t make any formal announcements until early 2025, it’s interesting to see multiple sources hinting at something potentially happening soon. As with all rumors, though, it’s best to stay cautious and wait for official confirmation.
