Sakurai apologizes to Smash players that have spent “hundreds or even thousands of hours” playing them

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had a small batch of new spirits earlier this year, but other than that, the game hasn’t had new content in a long while. Nevertheless, with the game in the rear view mirror, director Masahiro Sakurai has been spending much of his time since by doing video content and discussing his perspective on video gaming development.

For example, in a new Creating Games video he posted, he apologized to players that have spent lots of hours playing Super Smash Bros. games. As for why he apologized, he explained earlier that “Play time – especially how it’s conceived before starting a game – is better thought of as a cost of sorts. In the modern world, you’re constantly competing with everything else. It’s a battle for people’s time. Even if someone has lots of free time on their hands, that means something different now than it did in the past. There are always things to do. The question is: how do people choose to spend the time”?

  1. I get what he is trying to say but it is kinda stupid regardless. It’s like what if I bake my friend a cake and apologized for wasting his time eating unhealthy food instead of exercising.

    1. Sakurai literally inspired me to first be a content creator then a game designer, without these games I wouldn’t have realized my dream career

    2. Your friend wouldn’t be fat if you never decided to bake him a cake—and then mass produce & sell it to him and many others who are struggling with weight management and suffering in society because of it. All the while you are only getting richer and your friend is getting fatter and poorer. You probably don’t even remember his name anymore.

  2. Don’t call him weird for this. Lately, game developers have a severe disrespect of the player’s time. This could be a minimal as adding padding and grinding to the game to huge stuff like adding microtransactions and content that take advantage of FOMO.

Except for maybe 20 hours to unlock Mewtwo in Melee, there’s not really a disrespect of the player’s time in Smash Bros games. People play because they want to play, not because they feel obligated to. Maybe the exclusive spirit events might count? Anyways, it might be silly to apologize for Smash Bros in this context but the overall message is very important imo.

    1. Agreed. The reason you play Smash for a long time is because you want to, the game is not super grindy like so many modern games.

  3. The only thing he should apologize for, if anything, is making Sephiroth a Lightweight and have long ending lag on his attacks. In every appearance, Sephiroth holds backs, well it feels that way in this game. He’s one of my mains, just wish his Lightweight and slow moves didn’t hamper his huge potential.

  4. Fans: Sakurai, what do you have to say about all the hours people spent on Smash bros?
    Sakurai: I’m sorry.
Fans: What about having Piranha Plant be a fighter instead of Waluigi?
Sakurai: Not even sorry! I’d do it again if I made the next smash bros! And while I’m at it, I would cut every Capcom character, add 10 Sonic characters excluding Sally Acorn, replace every Zelda rep with the triforce trio from a link between worlds, bring back Mega Charizard X, add Master Chief, Sans, and Ashley as the second Warioware rep instead of Mona, and no Starfox newcomers!

    1. “Sorry for making a highly replayable game that is worth the price” ok????? I would have understood this, if he talked about wasting your time for something valuable instead of videogames, but he then said that “most people spend most of their time on social media” and that spending most of your time on the game you love playing is somehow bad? Fuck was sakurai smoking??

  5. No apology needed, sir.

Well, shucks. Why apologize for making games that have been influential in making me the man I am today? It’d be like me apologizing for buying nearly all his games, and in so doing making it just a little easier for him to continue doing what he loves.
