US: Nintendo Switch has now outsold PlayStation 2

The official United States hardware and sales tracker Circana has revealed today that the Nintendo Switch has finally outsold the dominant PlayStation 2 console in the USA. The Nintendo Switch family of systems have now shifted over 46.6 million units since launching in March 2017. This means that the Nintendo Switch is now second only in the United States to the best-selling Nintendo DS console which proved to be force to be reckoned with.

Lifetime unit sales of Nintendo Switch have now exceeded those of PlayStation 2 in the U.S. market. With its 46.6 million units sold life-to-date, Switch now ranks 2nd in all-time units sold across all video game hardware platforms in the U.S., trailing only Nintendo DS.

  1. I’ve been talking about this in the last few months and there’s something that leaves me really puzzled: you see, as of now (or, well, as to September 30th) Switch reached 146 millions around the world, while PS2 is at 160 millions. However, in Japan, Switch surpassed PS2 quite a while ago, while in US surpassed it right now, so going by exclusions, only in Europe PS2 remains unbeaten, but globally it still has around 12-13 millions of advantage now… which means that at this point, all of those millions of advantage are solely from Europe. What leaves me puzzled is: did… PS2 really sold that strong in Europe compared to the rest of the world back then? I know that Italy is basically Sonyland, but I don’t know how well Playstation does in the other countries there. So, how come that there is this huge difference of sold units of PS2 in Europe?

    1. Europe is roughly 1.5 or 2 times bigger than the states. Surely thats a factor.
Totally different time for consoles as well. PS2 was lightning in a bottle with the DVD player as well.

    2. I was living in South America during the life cycle of the PS2 and the PS2 was the only console that was available for sale which would drive up the sales of the PS2 during that time.

    3. My gut feeling is that not only is the PlayStation comparatively strong in some European countries, but also Nintendo is comparatively week. The UK definitely seem like a place where this is the case. Based solely on my own observations, it seems like PlayStation games are more often in the charts in the UK than Nintendo games, and even when Nintendo games do make it into the charts there, they rarely stay for a super long time. What the reason for this is, I can’t quite say, since at least here in Germany, I don’t remember PlayStation having much more of a history than Nintendo. But then again I also wasn’t very active outside of Nintendo bubbles in my teenage days.

      1. “right wing propaganda” and it was BS themselves reporting that there was a massive surge in “playground” reports.
        …ok.

    1. I hope you’re not using Twitter or X because some of the images on there you might not want on your browsing history either. They don’t have moderation

  2. Wow, talk about a milestone that the Switch was able to reach. I get that it still is probably number 3 on the world wide charts, but I didn’t expect news like that before the Switch 2 was announced early next year.

    1. This article is comparing the Switch to the PS2, beating the number 1 best selling platform worldwide in US sales. The PS5 won’t come anywhere close to these two success stories.

    2. Shuhei Yoshida - too busy to log in using the facebook app.

You are right, our console indeed has games…although those games are from our previous gen console but still those count.

    3. You could make an excuse like that for almost any system. People double, triple dip on handhelds. PS3, Xbox One, PS4, and PS5 were Blu-ray players.

  3. Wait, i thought we wasn’t supposed to mention Playstation on a Nintendo forum. That’s what i was told, sorry i didn’t make the rules.

  4. Now Nintendo’s next challege is will the Switch 2 be the first sequel system to outsell its direct predecessor? Sony is the only videogame company two sell a 2nd generation console outselling the first.one the PS1 followed by the PS2. So can Nintendo sell the next console to outsell the predecessor in a row like Sony did?

    1. Probably. It’s going to be able to support a lot of popular 3rd party titles that missed Switch and, overall, graphics have hit a plateau so it will probably miss out on less games than the Switch.
