Tom Warren clearly hints that Switch 2 won’t be as powerful as a PS4 Pro

The Verge’s Tom Warren has clearly hinted that the successor to the popular Nintendo Switch won’t be on the same level as the PlayStation 4 Pro visually. It is widely expected to be visually similar to Sony’s PlayStation 4 console with the added support of image upscalers. Nintendo has yet to reveal any specific details regarding the Switch successor though Mr. Miyamoto did say recently that he hopes that people won’t drag Nintendo into the ongoing console wars which are primarily focused on hardware performance.

  1. I wish we stop reporting on people who know absolutely nothing about the system it’s literally January and nobody still has barely played or seen anything fr remotely on it, can we wait for them to announce it and tell us the specs

  2. Well, assuming the leaked images from companies like Dbrand are true and its another hybrid machine, its probably another hybrid device. This means all games need to run on a handheld device. Secondly, Nintendo likes to make their hardware affordable. This usually means the platform is weaker than its competition like the Steam Deck. Why would this news be shocking for anyone if its true? Its still stronger than the current Switch, but even I wasn’t expecting this thing to pack any real power.

  3. Well it might not be as raw powerful as a PS4 Pro but i think will generally Switch 2 will visually look on the level of a PS4 Pro with the help of DLSS AI upscaling and some basic ray tracing.

  4. Appreciate Nintendo isn’t about the best hardware, but hitting ps4 power levels for a console that came out 11 years ago would be a serious disappointment.

    1. Perhaps if it was a conventional console, but it’s not. It’s primarily an handheld console at an affordable price.

  5. Hasn’t big names said it’s like “the same ish” as PS4? Asus Rog Ally can play God of War a little bit better than PS4, and I don’t expect a Nintendo handheld too massively surpass in raw rasterisation. Modern architecture and optimization will probably make a better looking product/games than PS4/Rog Ally anyway.

  6. “Clearly Hints”

    looks Inside

“ambiguous statement that could go either way so the guy can say “I told you so” when its revealed to be weaker or stronger.

  7. I thought that the consensus was that it would be comparable to a base PS4. Honestly though, I have stopped paying as much attention to all of this leak culture and hyper-focus on gaming news, so maybe I’m out of the loop.

In any case, I’m fine with base PS4 levels of power because Nintendo is very good at bringing the most out of their weaker hardware. My only hope is that the Switch 2 is noticeably better than the og Switch; I need a good reason to purchase the next console, and I don’t think it’ll be enough if it’s only marginally better

  8. Didnt another leak say it was between PS4 Pro and Series S? Jeepers creepers these leaks are getting out of control. But keep them coming unless Nintendo finally reveals this thing.

  9. Sorry… but I don’t trust Tom Warren. He’s not very reliable and I hope he’ll eat his words when the Nintendo Switch 2 has 12GB of RAM and the 4K DLSS in docked mode will be somewhere between the PS4 Pro and Xbox Series S.

Although I will continue to lower my expectations, I’m gonna wait until it’s officially confirmed by Nintendo and NVIDIA.

  10. True or not, we still need an official iteration Smash with Mega Man, Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Luigi, and Link as fighters but not Sonic so Smash can atone for the sins of brawl before we get an official iteration Smash with every fighter in Smash history AND Waluigi as fighters anyway. So if Nintendo/Sakurai/whoever is still stubborn about the only one new official Smash game per system rule, this will probably not be the perfect system anyway.

  11. If it’s finally reaching PS4 what’s the point in releasing it tbh? Major 3rd part titles will once again skip it with their heavy hitters. Tbh I’m tired of 2d RPGs and indies padding out Nintendo’s systems. Waiting for a heavy hitting Nintendo title to come. Switch era ran on old game ports

    1. Yeah, it was fun and shocking to see Doom 2016 run on the Switch, but that excitement has since worn off. And now whenever a new third party game gets released on the Switch they usually have to cut the framerate in half. I just want these games to look good and uncompromised on Nintendo’s consoles

  12. First of all, DUHHHH! I think at this point, if you know Nintendo you already know that its going to be inferior to playstation in terms of power. Always was, probably always will be. Just in a fiscal sense, it would be impossible to produce an affordable PS4 Pro powered Switch. This article is such a waste in terms of even reading it, responding to it and paying a journalist to write it.

    1. Rule 1: Never underestimate Nintendo.
Rule 2: Just because the Switch 2 is coming this year doesn’t means it will have the same power as the original.
Rule 3: The Nintendo Switch 2 WILL have the NVIDIA 4K DLSS technology built inside the system and it will have more RAM than the PS4 Pro.

  13. I believe less and less in DLSS technology… What for? because it is a useless gadget for Nintendo and moreover, provided that it is still a nomad, the only “modern” chip from NVIDA is the Jetson Orin which embeds a “lightened” version of an RTX 3050 which in terms of power is slightly lower than a PS4 Pro but we know that Nintendo will ask to hack it so that it is less powerful and therefore cheaper. A “bad version” of the DLSS, I can’t see Nvidia fiddling with the chip to just add features
RTX 4000 which seem useless to me for Nintendo… while unnecessarily increasing its price
And I think the same for the Ray Tracing, it doesn’t bring much in the end.

  14. Lol at people harping about more ram than the PS4. The upgraded models of the PSP had more ram than the 360. Didnt mean it was a more powerful console. Yall just love spending $400 on inferior products haha

  15. Here’s the thing: stop reporting on POS thieves! Rumors, leaks, etc, is all either conjecture or stolen property and NEITHER are worth writing an article about. People like Tom should never be listened to, and it’s a shame the community is so hellbent on knowing information before the rest of the world. You can’t do anything with it, so stop trying to find out something before everyone else, you’re like the people who still type “first” in a comment section.

I don’t buy consoles based on their power, nobody intelligent does; we buy them for their unique library/exclusives, that’s the only reason to buy a console and the main reason nobody has taken Xbox seriously since the 360. Nintendo and Sony are King, the specs don’t matter, the games do and Nintendo almost always delivers with the games each generation.

  16. As a fan, I find it intriguing that the Nintendo Switch successor may not reach the graphical prowess of the PS4 Pro. However, I believe Nintendo’s unique charm lies in its creativity rather than strict visuals. With the recent launch of the pacman 30th anniversary game, we see that fun gameplay can overshadow graphical fidelity. I’m excited to see how Nintendo will innovate next!
