Sonic Team boss: “Mario Kart World won’t have any influence” on Sonic Racing CrossWorlds

Traxion has had the opportunity to chat with Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka about the upcoming Sonic Racing CrossWorlds which recently had a successful open network test. Naturally when talk comes up about Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is kind of difficult not to mention Mario Kart World, which launched in June on the Nintendo Switch 2. Mr. Iizuka said that the company’s main goal was simply to develop the best Sonic racing game they could and he feels that the CrossWorld experience, which sees you race on another track momentarily, differentiates the games.

“Of course, we don’t know the road map of Mario Kart titles. So, when it was announced, the dev team was surprised about it.”

“However, typically when Nintendo releases new hardware, it’s pretty common that they also release a new karting title. So, the dev team was somewhat expecting a new Mario Kart to be released soon.”

“Whether or not Mario Kart was going to be released, our goal was to develop the best kind of Sonic racing title. That hasn’t changed – Mario Kart World won’t have any influence.”

  1. Interesting SonicTeam and Sega internally is making this not Sumo. Also Sega just go back to Sonic Riders or at least a collection/remaster.

  2. Sonic Team is only marketing the game to make it the best experience as possible unlike Team Sonic Racing. I think Mario Kart World might outshines this game and Kirby Air Riders in December in the Game Awards.

  3. The statement by the head of the Sonic team emphasizes confidence in the uniqueness of Sonic Racing CrossWorlds and its ability to compete with Mario Kart, despite the similarity of genres.

  4. The developers are confident that the games will attract different audiences and that healthy competition will only improve both games. This is also an attempt to reassure fans and focus on the long-term success of the project.
