Nintendo Wii U: Miyamoto Stepped Back From Wii U To Let Younger Engineers Create Console

Legendary games developer Shigeru Miyamoto has told French newspaper Libération that he took the decision to take a step back from Wii U and let younger engineers at Nintendo take the reins and develop the Wii U hardware. This is a huge change for Miyamoto as he was deeply involved in the creation of both the Gamecube and the Wii.

“For the GameCube and Wii I was really deeply involved from the start and the design of the structure and development processes… for the Wii [U], I would say it represents the beginning of a transition with younger generations of Nintendo engineers who have been more involved in the development of the project. I am still very present and engaged myself, but less directly. It’s like I stepped aside: I followed step by step work and gave them advice.”

  1. Well, eventually Miyamoto’s either going to retire or die, so it’s good that people are getting things done without him as much.

      1. U SHUT UR WHORE MOUTH!

MIYAMOTO WILL NEVER DIE, I WILL ALWAYS HAVE HIM IN MY HEART. I LIGHT CANDLES NEXT TO HIS PICTURES & PRAY TO HIM EVERYDAY. I DREAM ABOUT HIM EVERYNIGHT. MIYAMOTO IS MY MESSIAH. I BUY ONLY GAMES MADE BY HIM. FUCK SSBB, KIRBY, METROID, PIKACHU, EARTHBOUND. MARIO, ZELDA, OLIMAR FTW. IF WII U ISN’T TOUCHED BY HIS GLORIOUS HANDS I WILL NOT BUY IT.

  2. Well, Miyamoto is going to die someday (and so will the “first gamers,” but that’s for another day) so someone has to take his stead (or multiple people) once he’s gone.

  3. Well, Miyamoto is 58, he should be leaving his knowledge and giving advice to the younger designers and engineers; this would be the best way to preserve his historic legacy of gaming excellence. Not to mention not having to dedicate all of his time to develop the new hardware leaves time for him to oversee new games. I’m sure it takes a lot of time to manage new console development (3DS, Wii U), alongside of Skyward Sword, and most of the first-party titles for all the systems. But as the creator of Mario and Zelda I don’t think he will ever completely leave Nintendo. Even if he retired I think he would stay on as a consultant for these franchises. Speaking of, If Miyamoto doesn’t have a $billion retirement package, then Nintendo is ripping him off because of all of the money he has made them.

  4. So is this why the Wii U looks so boring and clinical? A touch of color wouldnt go a miss. I know the world is a drab and depressing place but passing that feeling on to a gaming console is just plain sad. I’m gonna have to pull out the sharpie and throw down some hood-rat tags on that piece… naaaahhm sayin’…. eeeehh!

    1. I agree. White is so yesterday, it’s: plain vanilla, un-attractive, boring, bland, sensitive, stains/dirt are more visible, no style, etc.

I prefer black, it’s: so much more sophisticated, dirt/stains are less visible, athletic, the green/blue light looks better on black, sexier, superior in every aspect.

White is so wash-out and ugly to look at.

Please, Miyamoto, release a black Wii U for us fans who have a modern sophisticated taste.
      -Thank you. :(

      1. I agree with everything you said there. White is boring, unless it’s white women! Those are exciting.

But seriously, I had a black GameCube and it was awesome. The best of all the available colours, imo.

  5. This makes me sad. Most of the people on my Multimedia degree have no imagination or creativity. I despise my generation.

  6. I love Miyamoto, but he can’t be here forever. I was worried that Nintendo would diminish after Miyamoto left, but he seems to be making sure there are people to replace him. Thanks Miyamoto :)

  7. Meh. You can tell his creativity has been slowly diminishing. The Gamecube was crap and so was the Wii–I don’t care how much it sold, sales don’t equal good qualty.
(A good example is Shamwow: it sold a lot, but was crap.)

Most of the games have been copy-paste formula, rehash, re-ports or shovelware.

People also tend to think Miyamoto did everything: he did not create Pokemon, Metroid, SSB, Kirby, F-zero, etc. Nor Is he the one responsible for the music in any of the games. Gameboy design was conceived of Gunpie Yoko’s Game & Watch.

Rare did a better job at Donkey Kong than Miyamoto. And poor Miyamoto got jealous and expressed his disappointment of Americans being dumb graphic whores because they prefered the better version over the duller one. Aww, u mad, Miyamoto?

I say: move aside old man and let newer, fresher minds work on creations. They might just do a better job at it than you, like Rare did.

    1. you’re kidding, right?
Rare have only their graphics going for them now because nintendo have the good half of their franchise, rare on the xbox is utter shit

      1. Rare has always been an independent company outside of Nintendo. They decided to make games for them at the time, considering Nintendo was going to sue them for stealing Donkey Kong and Universal Studios was going to sue Nintendo for stealing King Kong concept.

It’s obvious that you’re a fanboy talking out of the ass to defend a childrens’ franchise.

Rare was known for making critically acclaimed games like >Donkey Kong Country (no where near what Miyamoto’s crappy version was)
        >Golden Eye 007
        >Banjo-Kazooie
        >Conkers
        >Diddy Kong Racing(which Nintendo copy-pasted from this to make MarioKart)
        >Killer Instinct
        >Battletoads etc.
Which gained them awards and an international reputation.

Either Rare sucks now because the original owners left or they suck because Nintendo fanboys are butthurt that Microsoft bought them out.

  8. Here’s to hoping he can raise a new generation as good or better than he was… I doubt it though. I think what made Miyamoto great was largely based on his own personality and life experiences. This ‘new generation of engineers’…. they better not make Nintendo just another game developer.

  9. Smart move by Miyamoto-san. He won’t be around forever and he knows it. He has to pass his knowledge onto the new generation and entrust the future to them.He needs to take an apprentice under his wing, teach him everything he knows and hand the reins over to him/her. Some body has to take over his franchises when he’s gone.
