Controversial Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has told a panel at this years Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas that Nintendo doesn’t even know that there’s an Internet yet, as he spoke about the inevitable transition to cloud based gaming.
“Sony is a content provider in film and music and games; I think they’re ahead of the curve. Microsoft… They’re right back on track. These guys want to be an entertainment hub. So you’re going to get a box out of Microsoft that’s going to turn your washer and dryer on, and they’re going to give you the multi-purpose console of all time.”
“Nintendo doesn’t even know there’s an Internet yet so trust me, they’re going to be making consoles until someone explains it to them.”

It wasn’t Nintendo’s fault that no developers took any risks with online multiplayer. Sadly, not many did. The Wii doesn’t have a terrible online service at all IMO, it was about the developers not doing enough with what they had.

As far as I know, Nintendo wanted Sony to work together with them on the SNES but they had disagreements on a few things (like, Sony wanted to use CDs instead of cartridges but Nintendo didn’t agree on that). So they decided not to work together and both went their own ways.
So actually, Nintendo created SNES thanks to Sony as well.

Nintendo and Sony made the original Playstation together. Nintendo wanted to make a follow up to there SNES, using CDs instead of cartridges and enlisted Sony’s help. When the project was almost completed, Nintendo backed out because they realised that Sony wanted access to their IPs: Mario, Zelda etc. Nintendo decided against it and went on to make the N64.
Sony decided to take the work they did with Nintendo and release on their own. It as originally called Play Station, So to avoid copyright issues, they changed the name to Playstation and the rest is history.
Btw, Microsoft tried to buy Nintendo when they decided to enter the console market. Goes to show you that both Sony and MS realise the power of Nintendo.
Oh, I didn’t know it was that way. But as we can see there are so many different versions of this mysterious tale of the cooperation between Nintendo and Sony, I don’t think we can 100% tell which one tells the truth… To me, both the version you just told about and the version I talked about before seem credible…

Pachter, we get what you’re trying to say, but that’s just offensive. Nintendo has had online support since the days early GC testing. Nintendo DS supported online gaming very actively. Wii introduced the first constantly-connected system by Nintendo with WiiConnect24, and the 3DS and Wii U are actively improving on these. You’re free to say that they’re behind, but saying they don’t know there’s an Internet is offensive and stupid to them. But I suppose none of this means anything when you realize that Michael Pachter is an insufferable troll and is only trying to invoke fanboy retaliation.

Despite the fact that several Nintendo games bear the “Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection” symbol on them–and both the Wii and 3DS have online features on them (3DS admittedly more robust), I guess Nintendo doesn’t know s*** about the Internet. I don’t agree with Patcher per se, but it is nice to see what someone in the industry thinks. I also think his Nintendo staments have become more erratic lately; you can’t produce statements like these without expecting these(see above) responses. Its like he takes stabs at nintendo just for the hell of it, embracing the “Nintendo doesn’t know how to/can’t do online” stigma, and in his position as an analist it makes him come of as an bias idiot who honestly has no idea of what he’s talking about.

I don’t know about you guys but there are times when my router has issues and it just happens to be at times when I’m gaming and I don’t want it to always affect me if I’m gonna be gaming from the cloud.

This is the honest truth. Microsoft and sony are ahead of the curve in certain area’s with online capabilites but what of the people who own xbox or ps that aren’t connected nor can they connect because they don’t have the money to do so. Look at all that lost money on advertising to people who ren’t able to do a thing with the net. Nintendo may have an ugly network set up but they definatly aren’t losing out on the money MS and Sony are in that area. Look at all the ind games those two companies must pay the developers to make and they barely break even. Nintendo actually probably has a better system in way of Downloadable games. Who cares if they have DLC for every title they bring out. DLC is a gimmick of all gimmicks and people eat it up like cotton candy. Im looking forward to Wii U but not their app store. It is unnecessary to me but since people are bandwagoners Nintendo would lose out if they don’t have one.

With that logic, just because an Xbox game says “Xbox Live compatible” or a PS3 game says “PSN” doesn’t mean anything either.
Well, the 3DS has a great online infrastructure. The only thing it’s really ”behind” on is Usernames vs. Friend Codes, and honestly, Friend Codes are like a phone number now. No one ever complained about phone numbers.
That would probably be the only thing I think I could complain about. Other than that, if it connects it works. I don’t know why so many people expect a VIDEO GAME console to be able to go online and suddenly do more things than a computer is already capable of.

Their online just blows (at least for Wii and DS, it does. 3DS isn’t bad, but still needs significant improvements).

I like ALL the platforms and I don’t think the Wii’s online service is THAT bad. I play more on my PS3 but that’s not the Wii’s online functionality’s fault. That’s a fault of a drought of good software. When I decide once in a while to pop on Mario Kart for a few rounds, or sometimes Smash Bros or something else I never have any problems with connections or anything.
And even if it does “suck,” who cares? I barely even use my PS3 to watch Netflix even, and when I do I either use the Roku player or my PC. I’ve always been the type to treat my video game consoles for what they are–video game consoles. The Wii is a video game console. Unfortunately, PS3 and 360 are molding more into general entertainment devices, and for those services they do great.
True, the Wii has modest online support but it DOES work. It’s coming to a slog right now because they’re prepping for the Wii U. To each his own though; I can understand why you believe the online sucks.
We know they lack in internet service, however, that doesn’t mean they do not know about it, they didn’t focus on it until now, yes, that can’t be denied, however, the Game Cube was capable of online support, but they didn’t use it. They already have begun with the 3DS online service, just wait until WiiU comes out.

And as many people realise, cloud gaming is in it’s infancy. And it will be years before it takes off because people want hardcopies of the games they own… It’s called investment. How can any reasonable person invest in something that they can never physically own or sell again. This is a way for gaming companies to get richer while we all get poorer.

I don’t even know how to use friends codes and I am still able to play against others or with others online. Dr. Mario and Monster Hunter are my only expereinces but No friend codes required for them. User names and passwords are a better system but not as safe as friend codes especially when it comes to children…

Whilst I agree that Nintendo need a better online service, and that the Xbox 360 has much better online infrastructure (besides having to pay for most of the features), what Pachter said was that Nintendo don’t know that the internet exists. The fact that the Wii and DS have online in the first place, crappy or otherwise, and the fact that Nintendo have regional websites, shows that Pachter had no idea what he was talking about and didn’t care how wrong his statement was as long as he was saying something bad about Nintendo.
Also, he was talking about cloud gaming, which is completely different to playing Call of Duty against random strangers on PSN and Xbox Live.

I’d much rather play a Wii game online than use Xbox Live Gold. Xbox Live is good but should be free, you have to pay for things you can already do for free and pay extra for things you’re already paying for. Plus the fact that you now have to have Xbox Live Gold to use an offline feature: voice commands.
If Xbox Live Gold was free, I’d like my Xbox significantly more.

The Wii did great for the first 2.5 years. Then sales plummeted once people relealized the game selection was lacking. Just look at the Top selling Games for the past three years. The Wii titles will be few and far inbetween. That must mean more people are buying more software on the other systems. Its a known fact that software wins in a “console war”, not hardware.
He’s comparing apples to oranges. MS and Sony want to make all-inclusive boxes. Nintendo wants to change the way people play video games. Nintendo is not a media company, they are a GAMING company. Sony and MS were both companies vested in other things before gaming, so they obviously have a different direction. Nintendo wants to push gaming itself forward, which is great, because neither Sony nor MS is interested in doing that.
And why should Nintendo do exactly what MS an Sony are doing? There are already 2 huge companies already saturating the market, and Nintendo did great by dropping their lure in less saturated seas. While Nintendo does need to bring a fresher take on an online network than they ever have before, that is mutually exclusive from producing what are primarily game machines. Making your game machine “The Central Device” of your living room requires a good online network, but having a good online network doesn’t require making your console that all-in-one entertainment device.

Cloud gaming becoming a standard? really? Im sorry whilst cloud is a good idea, its totally unreliable, yes i use icloud with my ipad but this is different. Not everyone has access to the net at home, even if they did for most families a fast and reliable connection can be pricey. Look at anno 2070 on PC, a stunning, beautiful single player strategy game but you need an internet connection just log on and play (what i read from reviews making my decision not buy it) and this is a single player game, when the servers are down or you are having a bad day with your connection I would still like to play a game that does not require me to log online just play something that I wont even utilise any online features within the game. Pachter cant you even see how bad ps3 was at launch? the tech was to ahead of its time, fullhd tvs were still to expensive, same with blu ray movies in which not all were compatible with the system and sony expected it to do well? same can go with cloud gaming.

I am one of the few people here that speaks logic. Nintendo is a fine gaming company, but GUESS WHAT? So is Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo is not the be all end all of gaming. Not even close anymore. And to be honest, once cloud gaming becomes more viable, I think we can ALL agree Nintendo will be about 5 years behind the curve. Heck, it wasn’t until the damn Wii that they FINALLY accepted DVDs as a gaming format as opposed to mini-DVDs or cartridges. I am curious when
Sorry, Jake, we all can;t be blind fanboys. Some of us have actually taken economics classes and understands that Nintendo is not the top game maker anymore. Financially speaking, the WII U had better be stellar. Nintendo can’t take many more flops in their financial reports like in the last two years. If the Wii U does not shatter some records, Nintendo just might go the way of Sega and resort to only software with a side business in the handheld market, since that’s a market they have’t fu**ed up too badly.
And as per the handheld market, Nintendo better consider apps on smart phones here soon. The handheld market is dwindling thanks to smart phones. They can continue to, as Patcher says, stay behind the curve. But how long can they honestly continue to do it?
OH, and in case you still think I am a “sonyfagboy” (what are you, 12?) prove to me the Wii U is “more powerful than the PS3 or XBox 360. No one else finds it strange that Nintendo keeps making this claim but has yet to show a finished game running on it? If it’s to come out this year, a full tech demo game should be out by now. And don’t any of you DARE point to last year’s E3 videos, because those video were ripped from PS3 and XBox 360 game screens, which is just downright embarrassing. The same company that made the SNES showcasing games on other systems and saying “yeah, it’ll look this good if not better, we PROMISE!” How the mighty have fallen.
Here is the end point, I am no “sonyfagboy” (real mature, BTW, show some common decency next time), and Nintendo is playing CATCH UP with the Wii U. They didn’t adopt HD gaming, and now they are because everyone else has. They didn’t have heavy third party support before because of their motion control insistence and lacking hardware. Now they have atleast a controller with the correct amount of buttons. Finally, and this is possibly the most damning thing, Why has Nintendo not released their tech specs for their own system yet. What are they afraid the competition will steal their custom IBM core processor designs? Really? Is it because the final version isn’t done yet? Sounds likely. I bet the real reason is because they don’t have a stable master system to even release to developers. Hence the lack of third party game annoucements. Yes their are rumors and supposed “confirmations”, but no street dates.
Like I said, I love Nintendo. Lately though, they have done nothing to make them worth defending. Their online service is almost non-existent. The use of “friends codes” feels about as up-to-date as dial up internet. Their third party support has been just minimal since the days of the N64 and they haven’t improved yet ( some quality stuff, but not by quantity standards). Their 3DS system is almost a year old and the game selection could not be worse than it is right now (what, maybe 5 titles worth getting?). Even the last Zelda game was meh. And that’s Zelda! How do you screw that up??!!?
Sigh…now if you don’t mind, i think i’m going to go either play the GAME OF THE YEAR Skyrim, in full 1080p HD.Or heck, I could just plop down some Deus Ex: Human Revolution, in glorious 1080p HD. Or even better, i could play some Battlefield 3, while chatting with my friends on XBox Live, once again in full 1080p HD. Why? Because it works. It works well, they are awesome games the developers refused to release to a purposefully under-powered system, the online system works great, the friends system works better than Nintendo can ever hope to imagine (their best bet is to just copy Microsoft, to be honest), and they are all great games that came out in the span of three months of each other, not three years.

You have just named one game that works for Nintendo’s online system. The thing about Nintendo’s online system is, i bet you can’t name 10 games, that work well for their online system. If you can, great. I can name 40, right now, for either the 360 or PS3 that work really well for their online system. The point is, Nintendo is behind. One gem does not account or years of neglecting a very wanted feature.
And before you name any Nintendo game, just remember this: The PS3 has MAG, a 256 online multiplayer game in 1080p HD. I will just leave that thought with you before you name Nintendo online games.
I think you will find that Nintendo GAMEPLAY and now also 3D graphics are far supreme compared to other consoles. Mario Kart 7, Sonic Generations etc. May I also point out Streetpass, 3D pictures and Video, Swapnote, Netflix, Nintendo Video, AR Gaming (implemented in most games), Music, Faceraiders, Stop-Motion, Demos, Spotpass and much more.
Everything I hear from Pachter can be easily summarized to “Nintendo doesn’t have Internet.” That’s the only thing he hates about Nintendo and it’s the only thing he points about Nintendo… Nothing is really on his side either like the fact that Nintendo is doing very well with a very small amount of Wi-fi supported games. Cloud gaming is impractical at this point, unless you want to sell <30 million units worldwide. Something Pachter isn't realizing is that a large amount of ps3 and 360 owners aren't even connected to the Internet, due to their location. At the moment, cloud gaming would only work in some parts of the US as well as some other MEDC's. PS3/360 units sold greatly outnumber the amount of PSN/XBL accounts. And Pachter thinks cloud gaming is in the near future? No way.

Most average people don’t have access to the huge amounts of data needed I’ve tried Onlive myc connection simply can’t handle it and I’m sure a huge amount of people that aren’t in major cities simply don’t have access to the bandwith required for cloud gaming and likely ain’t for some time.

Patcher seems to not see that it’s everyone who follows Nintendo. proper 3d (mario 64) rumble packs, kart racing/party games, motion control, the female audience, the handheld market, touch screen etc etc etc. People care far more about new experiences than they do expanding others via online features. I’m sure once Nintendo get their teeth into ‘online’ they will once again show everyone how it’s done and the crowd will follow, I mean copy, again.
