Nintendo has announced that the Wii was the best-selling video games console in Europe during December, beating off fierce competition from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In the United States the Xbox 360 was the best-selling console throughout the year, and Sony’s PlayStation 3 remained the best-selling console in Japan.

*sarcastic gasp*
What? It’s pretty surprising given the Wii’s staleness as of late.
Exactly what I thought.
i dont think its that surprising as i live in the uk and we are in a financial recession in the moment so people were looking for cheaper gifts and the wii was made available in some of our stores for £80 which is roughly $125 with mario kart wii, a wii steering wheel, wii remote, nunchuk, wii sports and wii sports resort. whilst the xbox and ps3 stayed at least £40 ($62) more expensive. plus xenoblade and skyward sword have been very popular here
(It is/was a global recession not just the UK) anyway, it kinda is surprising considering most people should have got a Wii by now, it’s a shame for the non hardcore gamers because they’ll not even know about the Wii U then when it’s released they’ll complain how they only just got a Wii etc, so what I’m saying is, people should have waited till next year and not get the Wii, especially since it’s not GC compatible anymore, I don’t see why they’ve done that.
yes but you have to consider that the actual gamers will already have the consoles and will be waiting for the next ones the large numbers of consoles brought were purchased by parents for their children, neither of which are very game orientated in this country so they wont even know about wii u yet. even if they have brought a wii for christmas or early this year the wii u will still sell very well as parents will buy the new console for their kids, gamers will buy it for obvious reasons. remember these figures do not speak for gamers they speak for parents purchasing for children who have recently grown old enough for a games console
Kinect is becoming popular with the casual market here in the states, it’s not very surprisingthe Wii was only popular in Europe. The sooner the Wii U comes to replace the Wii, the better.
*surprising the
New Wii’s don’t have a GC support anymore … ;__;
If you notice what Sage posted above, it proves that it doesn’t have to in order to make sales.
Just sayin. But, I’m also disappointed about that.
unfortunately in the uk its all about price at the moment. nintendo doesnt really have a perfect rep over here as the games are considered “childish” or as xbox fans like to describe them as “gay”. i love playing metroid prime and wind waker on my wii which i had recently repaired rather than buy the new console. its the value for money of the bundle packs that get people buying them rather than the actual console or the games themselves. sure there are a lot of crappy games on the wii, more than there are good games but there are also some real gaming gems, skyward sword for example or metroid prime 3 corruption.
Nintendo should take note of a trend that seems to continue with EU Wii sales…Mario Kart sells consoles. I’d break with tradition and release 2 MKs for WiiU. If they half a brain the WiiU will have a 2D mario game at launch as well.
Well I guess I contributed in a way to making the xbox360 the best seller at christmas if Canada is included in the American sales. And you know what they were selling the Xbox’s really cheap on boxingday including many new release games. The PS3 was really cheap too (I saw a person buy both consoles, he knows what true gamers are like). But Nintendo had absolutley no sales going on except for $10 off a 3DS which it was for the whole month. So I am not surprised if Playstation/Xbox360 stuff were selling a lot more then Nintendo stuff.
the wii was marked down here in the states in all wallmarts to $99, and a few other places (the xbox aswell but i only saw the core console) whos going to chose that over an elite?
Yeah the Wii was marked down to $119 in Canada before christmas but not after. I dont know why it would be $119 in Walmart Canada if its $99 at Walmart America. Our dollar is either beating the american dollar or at par… And they wonder why Canadians love shopping in america…
why are other websites claiming the Ps3 to be the best selling console in europe and Wii in the states??
Notice they posted a picture of the Wii with a Wii disc and a Gamecube disc……too bad Wii doesn’t play Gamecube anymore…as much as someone can say “oh give it up, it’s a 10 year old system”….it was a nice addition and I’m sure it couldn’t have costed them “that much”…granted they got nothing out of including it into the system’s functionality…I can imagine a lot of people pissed about not being able to use GC controllers with Brawl though.
It just keeps kicking ass. There’s still some life left in the old girl, after all.
very good.i think they should more attention in their product
