Wii U Will Only Allow Voice Chat For Select Games

A Nintendo representative has confirmed to Kotaku that you’ll only be able to voice chat with select games. Games that will be supported include Assassin’s Creed 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. The Wii U GamePad includes a mic but you won’t be able to use it with in-game voice chat. Instead, you will need to purchase a headset from Turtle Beach or Mad Catz which will plug into the headphone jack. As you may already know, the Wii U Pro Controller doesn’t include a headphone port. You will have to use the headset on the Wii U GamePad, even if you want to play Black Ops 2 online with the Wii U Pro Controller.

“Wii U will have in-game chat functionality for select games, including, but not limited to, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin’s Creed III and Mass Effect 3. This feature will be supported by licensed stereo headsets that plug directly into the headphone port of the Game Pad. Licensed headsets are available from Turtle Beach and TRITTON.”

    1. This is such a terrible move. What a design flaw! It’s almost as bad as the original Wii’s “Classic” controller needing to be plugged into the WiiMote to work: it totally defeated the benefits of having a WIRELESS controller! You had to have a wire going from one controller (the one you want to use) all the way to the one you DON’T want to use. It was TERRBLE. It was basically just a really cumbersome, dangling battery pack (the WiiMote, I mean).

Now think of how crap this particular setup is going to be: want to use the Pro controller to play a game, and still chat with your friends? Guess what? You have to plug the headset into the Wii U GamePad instead of the Pro controller! Because like the XBOX, the audio you are sending to the voicechat via your mic is tied to your controller. So that means only 1 headset per console, since the Wii U doesn’t come with more than 1 GamePad, and they’re not sold separately. Nor do any games currently support more than 1 GamePad.

What people who say “oh but the headsets use USB and there are 4 USB slots!” don’t realize is this: for most people, at least 1 of those USB slots will be used for an external hard drive. FLAW #1. Also, the USB port doesn’t trasmit audio, it just supplys POWER. The Triton Trigger headset I have for my XBOX gets POWER from the USB, but still needs to plug into the XBOX’s audio output port via coaxil (red and white plugs) to get audio from the game. Same will likely be true with Wii U. So again, 4 USB ports doesn’t mean 4 headsets can be used, necessarily.

Another issue: batter life. The Pro controller is wonderful, because it has up to 80 hours of batter life. You know what ISN’T wonderful? The GamePad, which you have to use to plug the headset into, doesn’t have NEARLY that long of a batter life. So what will end up happening? Either you will have only a few hours of headset usage time, because the GamePad battery will wear down before your Pro controller will, or… you will have to keep your GamePad plugged into a wire charger (likely to the console, or to a wall socket somewhere) in order to make sure you can play for longer than a few hours. That means if you want to use the Pro controller for a game, you will have to:

      1) Have the GamePad wired to a socked/the console

      2) Have the headset wired to the console AND/OR the GamePad

Really? Wires running from the gamepad to the console, plus more wires running from the GamePad to the headset? Or from the GamePad to the headset AND the console (depending on the headset’s setup)? Worse. Setup. Ever.

It’s 2012, Nintendo. Why on earth wouldn’t the Pro controller have a headset port on it? Cost? Are you kidding me? It would make the controller be less than $5 more expensive. That’s not a good enough reason.

Think of this: if the Pro controller had a headset port, AND a rudenmentary, generic microphone (nothing fancy, just a generic one that could decently pickup voice, like the GamePad’s), that would do 2 amazing things: A) the headset port would allow people to use a wireless controller that is very comfrotable and, to a lot of people, very familiar, and have the headset (generic, non stereo ones anyway, like the ones that come with XBOX’s by defaul) plugged right into the controller. XBOX 360 already does this, and it works BEAUTIFULLY. Or 2) if the controller also had a simple microphone in it, then users could just plug in a pair of regular headphones (which every gamer probably has; I mean, who doesn’t have at least a iPod set of headphones these days) and use the mic in the controller for voice chat/in-game chat. No silly little floating mic piece in the way of your mouth, and only ONE wire connecte to the controller. SIMPLE.

Now I realize a lot of high-dollar headsets need to plug into the console’s audio output source, like my Triton Trigger headset which has to plug into the back of the XBOX, as well as the constroller. It’s a slight pain, yes, but they’re really high quality and it controls both voice audio levels and in-game audio levels separately, and is full 5.1 dolby surround. They’re amazing. But for players who just want to chit-chat with friends casually while playing an online FPS or MMORPG or something like that, why make them have to have the GamePAd hanging around and plug their headset into THAT? Now you have a controller (the GamePad) just sitting there next to you doing nothing, except acting as a HUGE, bulky headphone jack port. STUPID.

Also, only allowing voice chat for certain games? Are you fucking serious? This may not seem like a big deal to Nintendo fanboys, because they never had voice chat before. But to those of us with XBOX’s that have enjoyed it for almost 10 years now (because original XBOX with Halo 2 had voice chat), we see this as a HUGE problen.

The main problem? Only allowing voice chat for certain games means the voice chat itself does NOT operate within the Wii U’s main operating construct. In other words, you can’t sit at the Wii U dashboard and chat with a friend who’s playing a game, like you can with XBOX. You also can’t chat with a friend while you’re playing, say, Black Ops 2, while he/she is playing a different game. Because the voice chat operates WITHIN the game itself, not within the main Wii U operations. That is absolutely atrocious.

I don’t understand how Nintendo can fuck up so many simple concepts that have already been championed! Not saying they have to copy exactly what Microsoft has done (although, the Pro controller is EXACTLY like the XBOX 360 controller, just with the right control stick and face buttons swapped places, and it doesn’t have analogue trigger butters for varying degrees of pressure, which is a major, MAJOR fuck-up too… and it also doesn’t have a headset port, ANOTHER major fuck-up). But what they CAN do is do what Micorsoft is doing, but BETTER; IMPROVE on it. That’s NOT what Nintendo is doing. They’re taking good conepts that have proven effective and well-liked, and doing them HALF-ASSED!

And they’re sticking with bad choices that they made in the past: requireing you to use another controller for the headset while using a different one to play on (stupid multi-controller tethering bullshit, like the Wii’s Classic controller), not allowing free-range voice chat across all facets of the console and isntead doing game-specific voice chat & only for certain titles (even more stupid), keeping the TERRIBLE “Wii” name just because “oh, people already know it”, keeping the console design almost exactly the same (tons of people STILL don’t know it’s a separate console because of this fact, and also because of the terrible name they kept and just added a “U” onto it which just compounds the idiocy), kepping the low res, low-detail, overly simple, childish looking “Mii” design for their first “very powerful” HD console, when even the XBOX 360 (a 7 year old console mind you) has much cooler, much more charming, much more detailed and graphically impressive avatars that have just as much (actually, much more) flexibility and customization options, and even have different clothes, props, etc. The only time Mii’s ever change is in-game when the game puts them in terrible looking outfits; you can’t ever change the clothes of them just for fun in the dashboard or whatever; Just the colour of their “shirt” which looks like plastic. The whole Mii’s look like a plastic piece of crap; they’re plain, boring, and not charming or creative. Just… bland.

That seems to be Nintendo’s theory lately. They’re great at coming up with good IDEAS (the GamePad is an awesome idea in and of itself, there’s no denying that at all), but they absolutely SUCK at execution. They suck, and willingly ADMIT to not “paying attention to what other companies are doing”. Are you kidding me with this? IT IS VASTLY IMPORTANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THEY ARE DOING! That’s how you LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES! It’s also free market research! They do something, and if it succeeds, you take that into account and try to do it BETTER. Nintendo looked to be doing just that, for a very brief minute: they made the Pro controller. Cool, they got the idea: do what was super successful for the XBOX, just do it better and with your own “spin” on it. Well, they KIND of started to do that by almost trippling the battery life: AWESOME! Oh… but then they started to fuck it all up, as per usual: the triggers are NOT analoge, which means you can’t lightly press the trigger to go slowly in a driving game or push hard/all the way down to go faster, etc.; there’s no variable input for them, in other words. Then, to make matters worse, no headset jaclk. GREAT.

NIntendo will sell a lot of Wii U’s to Nintendo fanboys, I’m sure. Pre-orders have shown that. But I have a very strong feeling that unless they shape up and get their shit together in a big, bad way, it’ll end up being another Wii: a financial success for Nintendo, a colossal failure for real, non-fanboy gamers.

      1. Who cares about what all the darn twelve year olds have to scream about online? Um not me little man! Also why the hell do you act like you have to use the GD pro controller?! The Effin gamepad, which has the headphone jack on it, can be used to play the game!!! Get over this… I have had plenty of fun playing online games against whining little children such as this. Maybe some of us don’t care to hear about your latest teabag fest on someones CODs! VC is overrated and this rant is over!

      2. You put forth a posting effort that I have since gave up on months ago. The fanboys won’t bother actually reading it either, because the truth hurts.

Truth is, Nintendo fanboys are the only “gamers” really hyping up this console. Watch when the 720 is unveiled and the Wii U fades into irrelevance because Microsoft shows them how to actually make a console. Wii U is shaping up to be yet another “supplement” console, rather than a primary one. Good job.

        1. Eh, I won’t be interested in the 720, Microsoft need to learn how to make more than 3 decent IP’s. The PS4 is what I’m waiting for.

      3. All that effort just to end up saying it’s going to be a financial success for Nintendo but I won’t like it.

And? As someone who wishes to see Nintendo continue indefinitely, I’d much rather have that scenario than have you love it and them fail financially.

  1. i personally don’t use headsets but to be honest that’s just incredibly stupid… should allow headsets to directly link up with the wii-u via bluetooth

can’t understand this move by nintendo at all

                    1. I searched for anything I said with “destroy” in it. No such quote was found.

                      Get out of my sight.

          1. well you’re either a fanboy or the opposite of one
frankly i don’t care which and i don’t care what of but you clearly lack any impartiality concerning anything related to nintendo wich is a trademark of both

              1. i know that you’re a biased childish know-it-all and that’s plenty thank you

i wouldn’t want to know anything more about you even if someone paid me for hearing it

  2. so you need a headset to voice chat?

    that seems pretty random tbh
then again you’d be able to hear the other person’s game if it used the gamepad’s mic

    1. If it was like any other built in microphone then it should be able to be toggled on/off.

At this point you could just hope for future system updates.

    1. lol, was trying the reply to email to comment thingy…guess i did it wrong.

On topic. That sucks. I was really hoping for cross game and maybe even party chat. O well.

  3. That’s a really missed opportunity. They could’ve made online gaming an effortless, fast experience yet it turns out it’s nothing we haven’t seen before…

    1. You just havent played online gaming the way it was meant to be played.

Join a clan. Will make your online experience a lot better.

If you have a ps3 and starhawk, my clan runs officially sanctioned community events every week, and give out prizes. Things ranging from signed Posters from the development staff (which just too major cuts, we wish those that lost their jobs the best of luck landing on their feet) to 20$ Playstation network cards.

We are currently also organizing a clan tournament where the winning clan will be able to have their psn name a special color (your choice, any color but red(moderators) and blue(developers) can be picked) so that everyone can see that your clan is the true kings (and/or queens) of starhawk.

Note that is an event completely created by my clan and the community, and were generously given prizes from Sony to hand out. This is what a great community is. No 12 year old racists here.

      1. theres no such thing as SUPPOSEDE TO BE every single person on earth plays there way NOT ALL OF US ARE 11 YEARS OLD AND ADICTED TO SHIT60

AND SINSE DID EVERY SINGLE GAME HAVE MEANINGLESS CHAT A GAME IS FOR PLAYING

      2. That sounds pretty awssome, but some of us have very little time a week to join clans and play one game, i myself only have about 4 to 5 hours a week, and my library is too big to stick to one game.

I haven’t even finished Tales of the abyss and I got it on launch day.

    1. Nownow don’t shoot the messenger. I think it is good with some negative news sometimes as long as it is supported by facts :) Same goes for good ones aswell.

  4. Ok…that make zero sense…Why include a mic if you’re going to have to buy something else to use VC…? Am I missing something?

  5. That’s cool ! Although you should be able to plug normal headphones into the gamepad and use that as a headset substitute.

Wiiu has video chat anytime you want , so that’s awesome! We will just have to wait and see whart unfolds :)

    1. Nope. NopeNopeNope. There is no jack in the pro. This is an oversight, but hopefully Bluetooth headsets will work. I dont really want to chat any way, so meh.

      1. Nope what ? lol . You should be able to put the gamepad on its stand near by then plug your turtle beach into that and use a pro controller.

It’s no biggy anyway the gamepad is just as good as a pro controller it does everything it can and more . the pro controller is mainly to accomidate multiplay.

        1. it very clearly states in the article that the pro controller doesn’t have a headphone jack.. you’ll always need the pad nearby.. and if the cradle happens to sit next to the TV and you’re sitting 4 meters away from it.. well let’s say it’s not a smart move by nintendo.. headsets should be able to connect to the wii-u wireless but by the sound of that article they won’t be able to

    1. Hes mostly never wrong, hes just very negative about nintendo and blows shit out off proportion.

      His opinions are another story.

    2. I trust some of the Aeoluses more than most of the people on this site kinda, just keep track on their gravatars and keep score on each individual Aeolus :)

  6. I think Aeolus thought this would piss us off… it was ineffective.

Lol, but still it is a bit of a bummer but hey, the only people I know that actually uses microphones are 12 year olds who like to yell at adults for being immature.

  7. Seems fair enough.
Voice chat cant be moderated, and seeing the WiiU will target all ages, those selected games only have it so no kids get verbal abuse online. If i was a parent, i’d be very happy about this.

I don’t use voice chat anyway, but i can see why it wouldnt use the build in mic for online, you’ve got action going on from the tv that’ll be picked up by the mic. Can you imagine a 10 person multiplayer with 10 in game noise playing over each other…not pretty, so headphone makes sense.

Im sure someone will come up with a wireless headset too, people are pretty creative like that, probably use the usb port as a dongle, or something, but the gamepad and the pro controller have the same buttons so, pro controller users loss i guess.

Also, nice try Aeolus, go back to bed.

    1. Uhm? It’s called a mute button and/or parental controls. The voice chat excuse is really stupid now; you have all sorts of options to disable what people are talking about and few games prevent otherwise *if any?*

      Try again.

      1. Mhm sure. Can i just point something out? How many games actually have online multiplayer?

Those 2, Ninja Gaiden and Mass Effect. No-one plays the NG one anymore, and no comment has been made on the Mass Effect one.
There isnt a restriction, its just no other games have online.

          1. Aaaand, this is about the WiiU, not other consoles. Its not like every multiplayer online made is being released on the WiiU, and only 3 games use chat. The relevance of bringing up other consoles is pointless, because so far, all the online games, or at least all the decent ones, use voice chat

        1. Actually Mass Effect was confirmed, in that article. Another note though, and a quote at that (seeing as you love those), “any game with significant multiplayer presence will have online voice chat”.

Wheres the problem? If Mass Effect is considered significant, then alot of multiplayer title will use voice chat, and the ones that dont, dont matter.

      2. And how many people or parents actually use those options?
Must not be a lot, considering all of the pre-teen retards we get in online scenes these days.

    2. about moderating voice interactions…there are ways around this that dont require nintendo to limit the use for the gamepad microphone….muting..party chat are ways of moderating the voice chat experience…im sure if nintendo wanted they could come up with something else on top of those.

as for your argument regarding the mic picking up noise from the tv. Would that not be the case with a headset too? its still a mic..i still hear whatever is happening on screen or sometimes the music my opponents are playing in the background when im playing online games, and im sure they have regular headsets too.

it will still pick up noise on top of your voice. Even so, if tv noise is an issue with that method, we could just plug in some headphones so the sound gets routed to there instead of over the tv.

Everybody has a pair of headphones around. Its a bit ridiculous to force people to buy some headset when most if not all the functionality is right there on the controller already.

also, didnt nintendo release the wiispeak 2 years ago?…clearly they dont have issue with a microphone that may pick up more than just voice considering that was meant to be used from an even further range than the controller pad would be from us

regardless of your arguments about what would or would not be a better experience. That should be up to us to decide. Not nintendo to force on us. We should have the option of using the gamepad mic if we wanted.

  8. If you read the latest Iwata asks, you should know that the wii u pad uses a very intense wireless signal, so it’s hard to use Bluetooth without messing with the wii u pad and wiimotes, however reading the whole kotaku article nintendo says that Bluetooth could work anyway…

  9. Seeing as there’s in-game voice chat on the 3DS, why wouldn’t there be in-game voice chat with the Wii-U GamePad? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Not to mention reps often tend to be wrong and/or misinformed.

      1. There has to be damage in the first place for damage control to take place.
The only one here who is blowing this up into a big game-ruining deal is you.

        1. It actually is for people who want out of the box functionality or those wanting to use the Pro Controller instead of the Gamepad. Since there are no (known) wireless solutions, those folks are up the creek.

I don’t see how people are defending this with a straight face. We’re in 2012.

            1. ok now….read what you just posted…lets be honest here….you, along with those defending nintendo’s decision here are making us look like fanboys….we are allowed to criticize nintendo when its justified

      2. If the 3DS can do it, so can the Wii-U. Not to mention, these are reps. You didn’t believe them when they said that the Wii-U is 19 times more powerful than the PS3 or that every 3rd party game is in 1080p yet you so easily believe this. It’s fairly obvious you’re biased. You can cry damage control all you want, you know you can’t counter my points.

        1. First off, this is a controller; not a 3DS.

Secondly, prove that the Wii U can do it then, and that these representatives doing their job to answer such questions are wrong. That last part was pretty stupid, by the way. Because both of those were ludicrous claims. This seems very well in line with something Nintendo would do.

          Go on, humor me.

          1. The Miiverse trailer showed in-game voice chat. Also, if their handheld can do an online feature, why wouldn’t their home console do the same?

Not to mention, no, they were not hired to say random things and only one was a ludicrous claim. Reps in general are unreliable, they’re not told to lie for good news and tell the truth for bad ones, that’s idiotic thinking I’d only expect from you. Also, Nintendo is generally far more honest about their tech than either Microsoft and Sony so your point?

            1. I had no idea a “microphone” is an “online feature”.

Both were ludicrous claims. 19x PS3 at a base price of $300 and being sold at a profit? Yeah, fat chance. 1080p on all 3rd part launch titles? Sure thing, I bet they’re all going to waste extra time in upressing ports into 1080p just for the Wii U. /s

Nintendo themselves have said that the built in microphone will not be working for voice chat. This is the case until proven otherwise. Alternatively, you can keep asking them questions about it and see if you get an answer.

                1. Representative: A person chosen or appointed to act or speak for another or others, in particular.

                  Reggie is a representative.
                  Even Miyamoto can be.
                  Iwata is too.

“Representatives” are more than just public relations, and there is no way for you to prove right now that this representative is incorrect. Just a bunch of assumptions based on the 3DS.

                    1. That’s something you should be asking Nintendo, it seems.

They have e-mail support, so go bug them enough and you’ll get an answer.

            2. No, the Miiverse trailer did not show in game voice chat. It showed that you can SUSPEND a game and then chat. Not in-game. This is ridiculous. Nintendo screwed up

  10. …Have people never heard of Team Speak? Or Skype? I usually play with my friends and talk to them via these programs.

  11. This has me worried.
I don’t really care about in game chat. But what abou talking to your friend WHILE playing a game? All my friends are in jersey while I reside in Florida.
:/ it kind of worries me to the point where I might get my 350$ plus Tax back.

    1. You’re pretty skittish if something like this has you doubting a console purchase… Remind me not to have you play the tank on an online RPG. #monsterhunter

      1. Like I said I don’t care about the in game chat.
But I want something more than suspending the game. Voice chatting, ending chat than going back to the game. Ontop of that you can’t suspend online play.
I hope Nintendo comments on this
Shed a lil more light on this situation.

And how is monster hunter? I’ve never played it before it looks very interesting

  12. Wait. Aelous actually did something useful? The Mayans may have been on to something.

On topic: Not an issue for me. I’ll wait until Nintendo confirms this, and even if it’s true I’m sure some third party will come up with a suitable workaround. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. well, a rep from nintendo said “wii u is x19 more powerfull than 360″, some just said “games at 1080″ so, I’ll wait for real confirmation.

  13. Bad news are bad. I will not have to much trouble with this but I know alot of people who will have problems with this and I think this might make them wait with buying the Wii U I’m afraid.

  14. This is just weird. I was under the impression you could just chat through the mic on the GamePad, but I guess Nintendo didn’t want it to be easy for kids to use it *sigh*.

    1. I think it was confirmed any, but a few have been recommended by Nintendo. Nintendo will probably release their own, but maybe they have a good business deal with outside companies

      1. Oh that’s good news- didn’t want to replace my already expensive earphones with one of those those tacky headsets! I just hope my earphones and mic are fully compatible with the U.
        Thanks for the info.

  15. Strange, but ultimately not a big deal to me. I pretty much never use voice chat unless playing with friends, and even then we usually just use skype or google+ so we can voice chat with friends outside the game as well. In game chat has been outclassed by other programs for a long time, so for me this isn’t a problem.

Also, I’m a little wary about what random, unnamed representatives say since they’ve been known to be wrong from time to time.

  16. Nintendo put me up and then make this stupid move and drive me crazy why iam going to pay 50 dollars for a pro conroler if i canr hook up my headset why dont put an headphone jack on it or let the headset be bluethoot…come on nintendo i love you but is true we are in 2013 and you steel doind thins like is freekibg 1990 and am not talking abiut graphics am talking abou little details like this…like dont support ddvd playback or blue ray…like dont make mario 1080p… like make sure third partiez make newwwwwwww games not pirt from a year ago….like dont put multi toch screen o. The gamepad…like dobt say what is under thehood so

    1. Like, don’t use correct grammar and spelling.

Seriously, you sound like a bitch. A dvd player? Really? Who the fuck doesn’t own a DVD player. They cost nothing these days. If it save Nintendo millions in production costs they’ll do it, and, in turn, YOU get a cheaper console, because they can afford it.

Who gives a SHIT about 1080p? Only idiots. It’s a fucking game. Who cares if the resolution is slightly better? Is the game going to be better because of it? No.

MOTHER FUCKING GAMEPLAY!! DO YOU FUCKERS KNOW IT?! Why do you think games like Ocarina of Time are so respected? The game looks like shit now, but its fucking works, and its a masterpiece.
Some sorry sack of shit developers cant even get games to work properly on systems, like Bethesda.

If the game works, and it’s fun, who give a fuck?

        1. No, it’s just common sense.

I’m sick of seeing idiots on here, go on and on and on about “ermergerd, 1080p”. Shut up the fuck, its still the same game. If its a good game, it stay good, if its a shit game, it stays shit. Where’s the big deal here? Where does 1080p actually help what so ever. I just want to put the game in a play it.

I’ll play on a piece of shit tv from the 80′s if i had too.

          1. Plenty of people out there care about 1080p, if it makes their games look better so why the fuck wouldn’t they want it?

So YOU need to shut the fuck up and stop trying to speak for them you insolent little shit.

            1. It really isn a big deal. To idiots like you it is, but the game is still the same.

Yeah, its a slight negative. Nothing worth going on a rant for though. “No 1080p? Cancel preorder”. Fuck off with this moronic logic that a game needs to be in 1080p. We’ve been playing games in upscaled 720p for the past 6 years, some of the Nintendo only fans in SD. Clearly, nobody cares.

360 games look like crap compared to a ps3, on Mass Effects theres square pixels. And i mean minecraft sizes pixels, like the ones on the blocks. Nobody cares though.
Why? Because the game works, you can play it. Thats all that matters. Go FUCK OFF, with you’re bullshit PC master race crap. People like you put me off getting a PC. Im abandonkng Sony for PC’s next gen. Why? Because its pointless. I can save money by going PC. I can use the same controller, same game, same tv, for a cheaper overall lifetime price, and its a PC.

But guess what, sticking with Nintendo. Why? Games. Not visuals, games, the gameplay, the thing that matters the most.

Fuck off, you incest bred cunt.

              1. What a stupid little bigot and Nintendo fanboy you are. Show me these “cancelling preorders” because a game isn’t in 1080p on it, oh and legitimate posts by the way. Not every game is “upscaled 720p either” so you’re still an IDIOT.

Until you show me these “nobody cares” examples (and nobody better care, by the way) you can inspire some sort of point here, for now. It’s a dimwitted Nintendo fanboy going on with completely blind defense and pretending to know what the gaming community cares about. That’s what you are. The world isn’t about Nintendo games, step out of your basement.

I’m so sick of this gameplay “matters most” fanboy garbage. You said that with the Wii and the WII SUCKED. End of the story.

                1. so gameplay doesnt matter most? Also…it doesnt make sense to use the wii as an example against that line of thinking because developers never really tried or made full use of the wii. The system was given D list development teams, thrown together controls, and low budgets.

But if you look at Nintendo’s first party games, many of those games provided gameplay that exceeds most Next gen games. Whether in these cases it was because or despite the controls, fact is, the wii has some gameplay experiences that either meet or exceed the next gen offerings…and the only reason more titles didnt is because wii game development was never taken seriously by most developers and publishers

                  1. Not really, it’s more so they always preach the junk when the signs are obvious that the system won’t be performing anything close to the competitor’s products.

Good graphics and good gameplay > bad graphics and good gameplay.

                    1. not really?

I dont deny hypocrites exist. but its not just a nintendo fan thing. “followers” of all platforms have individuals who do that sort of thing. Anytime any one company has something over another, the excuses come out to defend or downplay stuff.

Either way, regardless of your experiences with what “THEY” say. It doesnt make the statement any less true. Gameplay beats graphics. Always

And yeah. there are games that can do both. But there are also games that dont. Of all the games released on systems, there is probably a low percentage of games with good graphics and great gameplay.

thats not to say games with poor graphics are often good in gameplay; but at least we can attribute that most of the time to a poor development team.

therefore the game would have been crap regardless of graphics.

But a studio who can produce quality graphics have no excuse, because if the have staff who can pull off great visuals, one would assume they could allocate some of those resources to acquiring staff equally talented but in the game design department, or just spend less time on graphics and more time polishing the game mechanics.

            2. If 1080p really is that important, than why did Mario Galaxy 1&2 became the most high rated games in gaming history and they’re not even in 1080p?

              1. plus everybody’s been enjoying playing games in 720p, why does it matter now if WiiU games aren’t in 1080p? Is it because of the whole next gen mindset? I dont know, but for me I really wouldn’t care much..

            3. prettier graphics are nice…but the point here is that its not as important as solid gameplay. Anybody who argues otherwise is clearly fooling themselves.

i would take 720p over 1080p if it meant the difference between a game running at 60fps over 30fps

              1. In my opinion, I think they need a nice balance in all areas. Game play is definitely important. But graphics is too. But it isn’t always about the realistic graphics. There are many different art styles that are just simple stunning, Ni No Kuni as an example.

A good game, will have both of those features.

                1. i completely agree. i wish most companies would experiment a little more with art styles/ art design.

going the realistic route in most cases is foolish. Its just going to make the game look worse because they obviously wont reach realism. So no matter what, its going to look a bit off.

developers need to “stylize” their graphics.

  17. ???? Love nintendi but this is bad move also is time to say what is under the hood so we know if it good to soen the money is like go to the dealer to by a mustang but ford will not tell you how much hp is under the hood just the futures if you want to k.ow you need to buy the car to see…will you soen 45,000 withoit know first if is what you are looking for? Noooo…the same with the wii u i want one but untill nibtendo dont show the soec to see if it is a 349.00 value i will not get one loce you nintendo but i will not make the wii mistake again .. Untill then i will play with my 3ds

  18. i didn’t know the pro controller didn’t have a headset jack
i’m assuming no wireless usb headsets then or?
doesn’t really matter much to me as i talk with video game friends through skype anyway

still, using just headphones through the pro controller would have been nice just because of late night gaming and stuff
hopefully they’ll make a new version with a headphone jack or something in the future

        1. Nah, he’s okay with peripheral overload rather than built in features to keep that at a minimum.

          We’re in the 90s, don’t you know?

            1. I don’t think there will be any…most third party solutions for this gen’s consoles are wired too if I remember correctly.

        2. That wasnt the point i was making. I curious as to why this a big deal now, when the ps3 has been like it for years.

            1. I didnt know the exact date. But the point is people got over it, and its almost got the same amount of sales as a 360.

  19. voice chat not in every single game going is clearly the industry norm LOL AT LETS PRETEND NINTENDO IS DUMB NONSENSE

that applys to every game system on earth there isnt chat in every game made thats common sense

and the gamepad port jack issue is again a nill point clearly the wii head set was USB so the wiiu will support both gamepad jack and usb conections for mics head sets etc

got to love the lets pretend nintendo are shit vib going around with this news

gamepad jack and 4 usb ports = theres no issue

  20. this is stupid next gen console without party chat wow i like to sit in a party chat with mates and kill noobs and the wii u dont have that fucking stupid btw can you video chat and play at the same time?????

    1. PARTY CHAT OF CORSE THE CHAT IS THERE WHO SAID IT WASNT and theres lots of games that simply do not need this crap nintendo is clearly approtching this in a grown up and commonsense manner

NO ONE CARES WHAT HERP DERP X360 FAN THINKS

MINDLESS XBOX LIVE WITH KITS 11 YEAR OLD TWATS

      1. mate im 21 but i like to have a cold beer with my mates and have a laugh and play games together lol im not xbox fan i play anything i just brought a vita today i just wanted to know if i could party chat thats all

  21. yeah, it’s not a big deal, WiiU already do a lot of things: HD, playing with a touchable screen in your controller, 60 fps, no delay between tv and pad, etc… you just can plug a damn thing into the pad and that’s it
Anyway we don’t need to talk to a stranger while playing mario, rayman or those kind of games right?

    1. Lol, you say “60 fps” as if it’s a feature…

Also, who is this “we”? I think you’re just trying to ask yourself that.

        1. It’s ok dude this is the very first time I post a comment, it was just a bait, you know we have the power to answer him or not.
On the other hand he makes me laugh a couple times each day :)

  22. THIOS IS GOIN TO TURN INTO A INTERNET ONLY ANTI NINTENDO MYTHOLOGY JUST LIKE Wii

THE WII IS SHIT THE REMOTE LAGS AND ISNT FOR FPS YES OK HERP DERPS THE FACT IS WII REMOTE RAPED AT FPS AND DOESNT LAG AT ALL

THE WII IS SHIT “”"”"YOU “”Have”" to use friends codes”"”"”"”"

been playing cod for years on wii talk to people all over the world guess what IV NEVER EVER HAD TO USE A FREINDS CODE >>>>EVER<<<

  23. So is the issue here that you can’t voice chat with friends in your roster like via a voice-chat app? Because that’s not too much of a problem when you consider the fact that Wii U will still feature real-time video chat, which will allow you to hear your friends as well as see them. I dont mind PM a friend (If Wii U has that hopefully – and more robust than the Wii PM ) on my roster to talk to them or chat on a forum or whatever, but a voice chat app on the system would have been nice, but it’s not too important

  24. Whoops, didn’t read the comments.
But yes usb to headphone jack shouldn’t be an issue, all we need to know now is
if Nintendo will allow it, and will it work. Oh well, we have 1 month left (:

  25. Seems stupid by Nintendo, not sure why they can’t at least support wireless headsets.

Hopefully the fan out cry will make them realize their mistake and work for solutions, if they are not already doing so and this is just how it will be at the beginning of the life cycle.

  26. it should have voice chat for all games…. it’s fun to join parties. Come on Nintendo!

ps: Thanks to Aeolus, seriously? why does he even bother to keep visiting this site?

  27. Do I find the decision to make voice chat an optional feature rather than in-system a mistake? Sure. I feel the game-by-game basis works fine for achievements given the separate game profiles, but it’s completely unnecessary here. Do I consider not allowing headsets to work w/ the Wii U Pro a problem? No.

From all that we’ve been told, it’s become entirely clear to me that the Gamepad has been designed as single-player/online controller and the WUP is, for their purposes, a local-multiplayer solution. Sure some games could allow primary use of the WUP while the Gamepad is the means of interacting w/ the console, but that clearly isn’t its primary purpose. With this in mind, it makes sense to restrict headset use to the Gamepad if Nintendo wants to make it the primary online controller. Too, from the impressions I’ve read so far, it’s light and ergonomically pleasing enough to use as a primary controller, so it’s not the equivalent of playing on the original Steel Battalion’s panel instead of the Xbox controller-S (like some folks seem to be intent on proving). I’ll find out how it feels myself as soon as the Wii U demo station comes to my Best Buy, but that’s my view for the moment.

  28. why are people complaining about this? it’s the exact same way with the xbox and ps3. well the ps3 can use bluetooth headsets, but still. and seriously, what’s the point of having the mic on the controller if you cant use it for voice chat?

  29. Are you fucking kiddin me? Only select games?

And Pro controller doesn’t have a headset port?!

Great. Now I have to plug a headset into ANOTHER controller. This is worse than having to plug the Classic controller into the WiiMote and completely defeat the purpose of having a wireless WiiMote.

Fucking disgraceful. But of course, Nintendo fanboys will make excuses for this absolutely TERRIBLE design choice. Like they always do, which just encourages further horrible design choices from Nintendo.

    1. I nearly cried when I saw this news. If I’m playing games with mates, I want to chat with them without any hassles! You’ve let me down Nintendo </3

  30. Kinda sucks, maybe they’ll make something for the Pro controller, like plug something were you charge it from. Still, there’s always Skype.

  31. hahahahahaha do you know what is funny about this, this come from a nintendo representative person.but one week ago also a nintendo rep says that the wii u is 19 times more powerfull then the ps3 and xbox, and that nobody believe, but this everybody believe how stupid is this!!!!!!

  32. I do not use voice chat that much. Just playing on my Xbox 360, hardly anyone voice chats during team games, there are too many people that swear, and I do not have much to say, anyways. So I usually play online games in text chat form or I do not talk at all. So I am fine with this.

  33. UM IT SAYS THOSE GAMES SUPPORT IT! It’s not saying it doesn’t support it! it’s saying it’s only those games that support it right now. Trolls go back to grade 1.

  34. Well this makes sense to me. I think that most third party games will allow voice chat. Obviously games such as call of duty will support it as mentioned above. But I do not think that many first party games will support it. This is because I think Mario and voice chat doesn’t seem right and it wouldn’t feel right at all. I wouldn’t mind having voice chat in Mario, or Zelda but I don’t think that is going to happen. I hope it does though. It would be a cool experience.
