“Nintendo Is Gonna Be Here In 100 Years,” Says Lorne Lanning

Earlier this month, Nintendo’s president and CEO, Satoru Iwata, revealed he’s against laying off workers. Although reducing the number of employees in a company is better for the business in the short run, Iwata doesn’t want the morale of staff to decrease due to the fear that they may be laid off. Speaking with VentureBeat, the founder of Oddworld Inhabitants, Lorne Lanning, has praised Iwata’s stance on layoffs.

“When he said that, in my opinion, he was immortalized in the creative community? I would work with him in a second,” said Lanning. “When a man in that type of position, in a world where the golden rule is the rule and that’s what’s expected at public companies, he stood up and said, “That’s not what we’re about. We’re about building great stuff. We have great people to build great stuff. We’re gonna do that.”

Lanning has also praised Nintendo’s way of doing things. While he’s not entirely sure of whether Microsoft will subsist in 100 years, Lanning is confident Nintendo will be here after a century.

“When I look at the history of Nintendo, I say, “Nintendo is gonna be here in 100 years.” I have no doubt,” Lanning said.” I doubt Microsoft will be here in 100 years. I know Zynga won’t be here in 100 years. I’ve been here longer than Zynga. [Laughs] We’re not making headlines in the Wall Street Journal, but we’re still building what we set out to build. Now we have to be clever and smaller in how we think, but we’re more self-empowered than we’ve ever been.”

    1. It is always delightful to see those that might have been reading into entertainment media falsehoods get with the truth and give credit where it is rightfully due. Nintendo have been about gaming from their onset in 1889.

  1. I can see that. Nintendo is one of the most well known brands in the gaming industry, hell, in the WORLD.

  2. Obviously. Sony might last 75 years if they’re lucky. Microsoft (Xbox division) 30 years, and Nintendo, at least, 150 years.

        1. Source? Statistics?

Look at the PS4, it has huge momentum and looks like they will pull a Wii……but with actual games.

          1. Pull a Wii? No. No person over the age of 45 will ever play a Wii. Wii appeals to everyone, even people who can’t stand to play bowling with Wii Sports.

              1. I’m 49 and I pre-ordered my PS4 on the first day. I also have a WiiU and a 3DS, so I am not a Sony loyalist, but I am not getting an XBOX One.

                  1. Believe me. I have been playing since I got the original Pong console for my birthday when I was a kid. I am FAR from the end of my gaming days.

              1. Considering that not having to pay for internet on the PS3 was such an advantage over the Xbox 360; consider if that advantage was lost, to be replaced with a slight price advantage. That’s what the PS4 is with Xbox One.

  3. Nintendo has enough money left for at least 53 years. (as of March 2013). and that’s if they never turn profit again. Thanks to the stellar lineup shown at E3, it’s safe to assume they can last longer.

        1. I think that’s what they have been doing with all the great promotions. 30$ for buying shin megami 4 and fire emblem? I hate my guts for not having the money for the game :'(

    1. How in the ball fuck did you come up with that number? The fact that iwata had to comment on potentially laying off workers should be the first sign of trouble. Yes I know he said he’s against it but with all these horrible decisions Nintendo has made over the years, its safe to assume he’s also against turning a profit.

      1. “The fact that Iwata had to comment on potentially laying off workers” just means it was brought up at an investor’s meeting. Staff numbers is always brought up at investors meetings, whether it means potentially decreasing or potentially increasing or staying the same.

      2. is not sign of trouble, it just that, you can “make up” the numbers by lying off people, not because YOU NEED to lay off people, it’s just numbers

        1. Yea like the fake profit Sony did by selling there headquarters. Company’s like that don’t deserve investors.

  4. Probably, though i expect there will be a few company merges along the way.
Sony’s SCE will probably still be around, but i don’t know about their other branches.
MS could be, but honestly, all someone needs to do is make an OS that catches on and provides a better deal and service and they’re done, Apple could of, but they’re just as greedy.

    1. Sorry. We don’t have time to find replacements. Please understand and continue working on Smash Bros.

      1. Good morning fellow master of the universe Nintendo commander. Goodmorning fellow master of the universe he-man forever. Goodmorning everyone :).

  5. seeing that nintendo is one of the oldest companies in game industry i wouldn’t be surprised if they last for long time. They have legends and they have made made legends.

  6. Nintendo has proven that it can find ways to reinvent itself in order to stay with the times. If videogames ended tomorrow I have no doubt they’d do it again. Nintendo is here for a long time coming still…

  7. nintendo is a great company, my first vacuum cleaner was by them ” the kirby vacuum cleaner” and now they are a video game company that creates the finest vacuums, thanks wii u for a dust free and spotless house.

    1. just picture how good a vacuum cleaner would be by nintendo in 100 years. O_O

how can something collect more dust than the wii u…. i bet that my house wouldnt have dust at all. inwiiuwedust, bless you…..

  8. Iwata has always been one of the best things that happened to Nintendo imo. He isnt asshole to other devs like Yamauchi ( altough i think Yamauchi is cool too). He raised Nintendo from dust with doing things no one would have ever tried DS,WII,3DS and i have feeling that Wii U will be somekindof succes too. Now before anyone says anything about 3rd parties, Nintendo has 3rd party support its not in homeconsoles but its on their handhelds and handhelds have always been atleast in my opinion best thing about Nintendo, because you can take those awesome games with you anywhere. I cant say same about Sony handhelds they have no support from anybody, i have one and i never have taked it with me what a lame system Vita is. Anyway Iwata literally rules. Oh and the whole Nintendo Direct thing is very awesome delivering news directly to fans. Keep going Iwata you rule!

    1. Sony handhelds have no support?

      Sega
      Namco bandai
      Tecmo koei
      Gust
      Atlus
      Ubisoft
      Gungho online
Konami ( Kojima loves the vita)
      Telltale games
      Team 17
      Square enix
      Ripstone
      PQube
      Activision
      Playerthree
      NIS America
      EA
      NNOOO
      Code masters
      Drink box studios
      Neko entertainment
      Warner bros
      Playdead
      Milestone SRL
      Odd world inhabitants
      Rising star games
      Zen studios

And that is just some of the supporters. You fanboys need to fuck off.

      1. All that third party support and the Vita still sucks? I now blame Sony and their over pricing ways. Price cut of the vita is a must then.

        1. The Vita itself doesn’t suck. There are tons of great games on it too. The amount of systems sold sucks. The Sony marketing sucks. And yes, the storage/pricing sucks. But a price cut isn’t beneficial without a system seller, which I assume will come with Tearaway and Killzone Mercenary.

      2. But the Vita is so worthless next to my 3DS. I feel like all the money i used to Vita are wasted, it barely has any worthwhile games besides from old psp jrpgs and soul sacrifice. 3DS dominates it has all the awesome games comin this year BravelyDefault,SonicLostWorld,TlozAlbw etc. What is comin to Vita? thats right nothing it keeps collectin dust. 3DS goes with me everywhere because its so awesome, Vita just gathers dust. There is a reason why 3DS is the best system out there.

        1. gravity rush, god eaters 2 (if it gets released, and i realize its on the psp but i’ve personally played the vita version and its gorgeous and plays like a beauty), ragnarok odyssey, virtues last reward, tokiden. all these wonderful games say hi. i realize its opinion but to someone like me the vita has plenty of high quality masterpieces.

        2. I have both the 3DS and Vita and my Vita gets a lot more use than my 3DS – even with Animal Crossing on it. >.<

Tons of great games that keep me busy on my Vita.

      3. EA supports the vita? With what? Kojima can love anything but if he is not given permission to work on it is not goin to happen. The vita will sell but it will be during the transition pass betwin the 3ds and his successor.

    2. ” I cant say same about Sony handhelds they have no support from anybody, i have one and i never have taked it with me what a lame system Vita is.”

That statement alone proves you do not have one.

      1. I have its waiting Pso2 to be released here. Other than Soul Sacrifice no games on it interests me. 3DS FTW Baby!

        1. I know Japanese, so I’m playing all the greatness from the Vita ;) the amount of gems in Japan far outweigh the “gems” on the 3DS.

            1. The 3DS has been out longer than the Vita; of course it has more games. But they both have great games. In the year and few months that the Vita has been out, I have already played about 70 games on it. I have played a lot of games on my 3DS since it has come out, but probably not nearly as many as I have on the Vita. The 3DS has big name titles that are wonderful, but the Vita has a lot of sleeper hits.

Comparing both the 3DS and Vita’s metacritic scores, they both have comparable amounts of well reviewed games:

  9. The non believers have began to see the light as was stated :

“Humbleness cometh before exultation.” Iwata, Reggie, Miyamoto and others took 50% to 30% pay cuts to revitalize and instill confidence in their company and loyal consumers. Result of which the 3DS is the next generations greatest console. When you are good and humble others praise you are should always be. Nintendo gaming is true entertainment. Even when real television existed in the 1980s nintendo was there. Smile and realize a great loving ONE is smiling on nintendo and it’s gamers :).

    1. rofl @ you thinking paycuts have much influence over nintendo’s overall net profit whahaha..economics not even once..

  10. I like that aspect of how Nintendo runs its business too. Nintendo also gives more to its customer than Sony or Microsoft.

  11. But I do think for Nintendo to stay relevant they have to take some risk on the side of hardware. The Wii and the Wii U are not powerful as the competition and that has to change. The next portable handheld console must be competition with the likes of IPod and kindleHD fire and Tablets.

  12. I do feel as though Nintendo will last the longest out of all the three. Only they will march to the their own tempo and mostly worry about the quality of gameplay and content

  13. erm MS won’t be here in 100 years, i think they will & have a much better chance of this than Nintendo, MS may not be in the games industry though, well they could be, via owning Nintendo.

    1. I don’t get why people continue to hate and criticize companies and corporations, unless they were like Microsoft.

      1. I agree. Can you believe Don Mattrick literally left Microsoft for more money? I mean getting money is why these companies make video games and all but it still seems kind of money whore- ish.

      1. If you ask me, yeah, Nintendo is a full dedicated gaming company, Sony and Microsoft has to deal with other stuff as well. But I think Microsoft will be the first to leave, all their recent layoffs, and poor decision making is hurting their own image and definitely will hurt them in a long run, Microsoft (Xbox) is losing their own throne faster than I was expecting.

  14. I honestly think that any company can try to be there as long as they can, maybe forever if they try. Since I wonder what will happen when this hundred is over? :P

  15. Nintendo will outlast everyone in the entertainment industry. They have already been around for 124 years.

  16. As long as Nintendo is around during my entire lifetime, that’s all that matters to me. Though I hope they’re around forever. It would be a sad world if they ever disappeared, and all that was left is Sony and/or Microsoft. Disturbing. : S

  17. The may be here in 100 year but not as a video game company. Remember Nintendo started out as a playing card maker. In 100 years video game will be holograms you interact with. No one alive to fay will be her in 100 years so I could be wriong.
