NeoGaf user Aquamarine has complied a list showing the amount of Wii U games from August to December and has compared it to the GameCube during the same period in its lifetime. The Wii U has thirty-six games from August to December, whereas the Gamecube had one hundred and nine. The software shown is software released in the United States. The list clearly shows that the Gamecube had better third-party support despite the console failing to break any sales records.

Every PS2 had a DVD drive in it; which made it so – even at $100 more than the Gamecube – Sony lost money on each PS2, and only gained it back with games; meanwhile, Nintendo was sitting happily making money off each Gamecube AND their first-party games sold an absolute ton.
Not to mention, this was also when they had the latter Gameboys out and selling, which also made a ton of money.

You need to remember that the Wii U sold 3.06 million in one month and a half. Which is INSANELY good. The Wii sold 3.05 million in the same time frame. If you think about it, the fact that the advertising for the Wii U is awful, and you really don’t see people talking about it, the fact that it still sold 3.06 million without ads. That’s pretty dang impressive. Remember also that the big AAA first party titles hasn’t come out yet. Remember that the Wii U needs some software. Look at the 3DS. It’s become THE fastest selling system of all time. The Wii U doesn’t have a 3D Mario or Mario Kart yet. The 3DS does.
Wii only sold that little in that time-frame because there was a shortage of the systems. There’s no shortage of Wii U’s at all. ;/

The system will pick up sales as time goes on. It’s still in its first year. We need to look at year two to make a better evaluation of everything.

Don’t really agree there. I only ever spoke about graphics if people were putting them down compared to PS3 and Xbox 360, Even though i don’t really care about them, you still have to give credit where credit is due. But, i honestly do think gameplay is more important–because it is. There’s no argument there. Why would i want to play to a game that looks good, but plays like total crap? Go watch a movie if you’re all about graphics. But i do admit the PS4 and Xbox One look terrific–it’s just not what i care about. I just want to play some of nintendo’s amazing 1st party titles, and any third party titles that interest me. Nothing jumps out at me with the other consoles, but i will get one if they ever peak my interest.
PS4 launch games are Zzzzz. Truth be told the big PS4 games aren’t ready at launch. I want a PS4 and I’m disappointed in that launch. Hell, the Wii U had a better launch linenup, this is coming from an unbiased standpoint. The PS4 launch is being over-exagerrated. The only exclusive big game I see is Killzone Shadowfall. Infamous Second Son isn’t a launch game, and I want that game. Even the big 3rd party games you can’t already get on the Wii U or 360/PS3 isn’t ready at launch. The Division won’t release until the end of 2014, and The Crew is still a ways off also.
It’s to be expected though, if you really want a game to shine, you can’t rush it for launch or a Christmas release. It seems like every consoles launch has been a little rocky for a while. Gosh, The 3DS’s and Vita’s were horrendous. Games do eventually come..it’s just kinda annoying how long it took Nintendo to release some first parties. I’m aware that you were talking about the PS4, i just don’t really have anything with playstation to compare it to, as i haven’t really had too much of an interest in playstation since the 2.

Pretty much. The market has changed since the release of the Gamecube, Wii U is Nintendo’s first HD console, Wii U has almost the same amount of “quality” games, right now, vs the Gamecube who only had a handful it’s whole life. Wii U has a gimmeck while Gamecube didn’t, Wii U has online capabilities (Miiverse, Web browsing, online multiplayer, ect.) while GC didn’t, the best part about the Gamecube was Super Smash and Sunshine and Wii U is getting Super Smash and 3D World. The Wii U, believe it or not, is actually in a better position than the Gamecube.

I watch Reviewtechusa on youtube and he claims that console makers are hoping for a 10-year generation for at least the PS4/Xbox One. If the Wii U does this eventually it will gain enough sales to be a “successful” console because it will have so much time to gain sales compared to gens that were only 5 years. Or Nintendo could go the route of releasing an equal or better system to the PS4/Xbox One and take it’s chances on that. What do you think they will do?

Yeah, but the Wii U’s 36 games are better quality than the 109 games on the Gamecube. I remember only really owning like 20 “good” games on the Gamecube throughout it’s ENTIRE lifespan. I already own 12 games for my Wii U (not including indie games) and it’s only been out for a year. Quantity means nothing over quality.

Dave Mirra 2, time spliters, Tony hawk 3 and 4 , burnout, star wars almost anything, wwe games that looked better than the ones now, smuglers run, viewtyful Joe, resident evil, NBA street, tales of symphonia, battalion wars, gauntlet dark legacy, and many that no remember the name but the developers like namco, capcom and konami. Goblin commander was also a most own.

Now all they do is baby games, so the only ones happy are the babies. Nintendo made the decision years ago to go the baby way, that is when they sold Rare(Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Conker, Jet Force Gemini), Silicon Knights(Eternal Darkness), Left Field(Excitebike64, NBA Courtside games), broke the relationship they had with Factor 5(all the Star Wars games). They had games like Wave Race and 1080° . Back in those days Nintendo had a variety of games for different types of gamers. Now all they do is baby games for the baby gamer.
Why is any 3rd party developer going to support this underpowered system, they would have to go back in time and develop on this outdated underpowered excuse of a baby toy console. 3rd party support on the Wii U is great, right babies? But don’t worry, when you tell them that ,the babies say “nobody buys a Nintendo console for third parties”. With a mentality like that what 3rd party developer is going to bother making games for it.

Let’s look a Nintendo’s home Japan. Before Pikmin 3, sales were like how its now in Japan. But at release and during a few weeks after, sales of Wii U never dipped below 8-9 thousand. Let’s head to…..No let’s wait till we get the numbers for September and Q2 this month. The system probably sold 100,000 units in September. July for Japan and Europe and August for America should bring that number up significantly.

Sort of apples and oranges. This list doesn’t include Wii U downloadable software, which is equal to at least some of what hit the GCN in that time. The industry also had a lot more shovelware back then. The Wii U might not have a lot of third-party software but is there really a lot of stuff its missing this holiday season?
Besides which, while the Wii U has very little third-party support, I wouldn’t want someone to come away either pining for the good ol’ GameCube days or saying, “Wow, it’s even worse now than it is then.” Third-party support on Nintendo systems has been brutal since the SNES days. At this point I don’t even care to guess why, it really defies logic.

It’s a different time and the wii u faces different challenges. Pretty much every game company is having lower sales look at all the game companies merging or close to collapsing. The GameCubes lineup for this time period is already 1,000,000 times better than the Wii U’s solely due to the fact that it got Metroid Prime. Wii U simply doesn’t have a game of that calibur yet.

Yeah I know Wii U sales are terrible right now. Honestly though, I can justify my purchase of one if I get Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8, Yoshi’s Yarn, Zelda Wii U, and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem (Super Smash Bros. just isn’t doing it for me right now). If I can get those games I will be one happy gamer and I will have over thirty games on my Wii U (including indie titles). Thirty games is a pretty decent library.

Well, the Gamecube was a totally AWESOME console. It’s one of my favorites. But man……the more negative news stories I hear about the Wii U, the more I feel like maybe I should hold out on buying one until I see if it starts selling better. If you ask me, Nintendo doesn’t even act like they care if the Wii U sells good or not. I’ve never seen such poor advertising for one of their consoles before. It’s like they have no enthusiasm. Did Nintendo think that Reggie appearing on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” was enough advertising? Heck, most people probably never even seen any of his appearances on there.
I love Nintendo as much as a person possibly could, but I really can’t understand their marketing strategy with the Wii U. With the holiday season coming up, you’d think they would start ADVERTISING! Also, put some freakin’ Wii U kiosks in all Wal-Mart (and maybe Target and Best Buy) stores. NONE of these stores has a Wii U kiosk where I live.
I have never seen the Wii U in person (on a kiosk). And if I haven’t, then I KNOW that a lot of others haven’t either. I still have never seen what the HD graphics looks like. Shame.

Nintendo is more worried for 3DS than Wii U.
Why would Nintendo be worried about the 3DS? It’s the # 1 selling game system of all-time.

Main reason why is because the game cube had similarities to the N64 which everyone already loved. The graphics were improved and it had great games. Sure you had games from series everyone already knew like Zelda or Metroid, but you also had great indie games such as viewtiful joe.
The Wii had no appeal from the start. It’s more of a gimmick than a game console. Motion gaming should be nothing more than an add on to a console, but it shouldn’t make up the whole system. I feel all modern games and systems are focused on making money and don’t take as many chances to make something unique and fun. If you want things to be how they used to be STOP PLAYING IT SAFE!
