DFC Intelligence has predicted that the Wii U will shift only 25 million units by the end of its lifetime – placing Nintendo’s latest console slightly above the Nintendo GameCube, which sold roughly 22 million units. On the other hand, the Wii – which was released in 2006 – has surpassed 100 million lifetime sales, making it Nintendo’s best-selling home console.
Wii U “is expected to be mainly a system for Nintendo first-party software,” DFC Intelligence wrote in a market research report provided to IGN.
“[Its] sales [are] anticipated to be only about a quarter of the Wii.”

They´re becoming again a niche market and any of the 8th gen consoles will match its predecessors sales. It´s a fact that people insist in deny. Yep, I see smart devices continue to errode the dedicated gaming consoles market share even further; especially when they allow those devices to connect to the TV for gaming. I see the big 3 all struggling to survive when more complex gaming genres start hitting these devices in full stride. The Wii U sales my very well turn around next year, but you don’t know that. There is no foundation to support that train of thought. You HOPE that sales will pick up. I’m old enough to remember Nintendo from it’s humble beginnings in the console market. Nintendo used to be the one company that covered all bases. Nobody got left out. Everybody got what they wanted. Platfomers, RPGs, action-adventure, racing, sports, fighting, FPS, TPS, RTS, survival-horror, I mean everything. And it wasn’t really that long ago that we had this. The GameCube covered all those categories.

I don’t think Sony can afford to do anything against Nintendo and it is not advantageous for them to do so because this is becoming East vs West and I think they understand that which is why they have been huggy-buggy towards Nintendo in the public eye as of late and vice-versa.
Even Yoshida came out to say that Sony needs to be strong for SONY’S survival. Well, the Gamecube sold about 21 million which isn’t much better, but even thought the PS2 sold 6X that amount people generally don’t look at the Gamecube as a failure because it had so many great games and covered ALL genres and not just 2 like the Wii and Wii U as of right now..

Microsoft and Sony don’t really think of how to innovate gaming that much, which is why Nintendo still has a place in this market. If they can make something in a future generation that can change gaming in a significant way, gamers will continue to make the same “mistake” and buy into Nintendo’s consoles. Even when Microsoft and Sony copy Nintendo’s ideas, they don’t really do much with them, so Nintendo’s games tend to make better use of new ideas.

I agree with these guys, I predict lifetime sales over 5 years to be roughly 28.75 – 32.08 million sales and 50 million IF Nintendo pull off a miracle somehow during Jan 2014 – Jan 2016 with actually not doing anything retarded like they did this year – and actually advertise the Wii U 24/7 365 days a year.
I’m a huge fan of Nintendo, and people shouldn’t judge 28 million sales bad I’m sure Nintendo will make huge profits even off small sales, and the huge profits from the Wii, DS and 3DS can keep them going for a VERY long time even if the Wii U by some odd reckoning didn’t make any. But in 5 years it will be the due date for 3DS to retire and Wii U happen obn the exact same year and Nintendo can do something smart like an all in one home and handheld console in one – that’d be the smartest thing IMO
All in one console would be a pretty smart move for Nintendo next gen. With consoles starting to wear out their welcome and mobile devices steadily increasing in popularity, Nintendo should start to transition in that direction so they can remain relevant. And they can do some pretty neat things with the differences between home and mobile environments (imagine a game that you can play like a console game at home, and then take with you on the road and play in a more handheld style). Not to mention that we’d finally get that 3D main series Pokemon game people have been asking for since the beginning of time. I could see that working in Nintendo’s favor if they pull it off correctly.
I doubt Nintendo will end the Wii U early. The Gamecube didn’t sell well either, and yet Nintendo stuck with it until the end.
The last company who ended a console’s run early to try and keep up with the competition was Sega. And we all know what happened there…
I think the Wii U will have a 5 year lifespan being replaced in 2018 during it’s “6th” year 2018 (although the successor will be announced during its 5th – E3 2017)

But they’re obviously not going to retire it too soon or else the new console may end up being rushed and buggy. Not to mention that consumers will be less trusting of Nintendo’s consoles if they discontinue it early.
though i like nintendo, i want nintendo to have low sales on wii u so that they will learn that power is important… i want them to make their next console more powerful and more easy to program with than the next ps and xbox… am i a bad person? :|

I really don’t care. I think low hardware sales may drive them to create more and more exclusives. As long as they make quality exclusives, I don’t care if the user base is low. I’m still going to buy this once Smash Bros comes out.
I have a question. We’ve seen several predictions like this already, so why do sites like this continue to post new articles about them. Are you trying to push the fan base from your site? Isn’t it enough already? I don’t care what company it is, there is always some negative news. Do we need to dwell on it here or can we maybe focus a bit more on the good? This keeps up and I wont be visiting here anymore.

I like the articles here. I even like that 2/3 of the commenters are total dicks. Come to think of it, I guess this site isn’t for everybody. Honestly though, I think there’s a good balance here in what’s reported, and I haven’t noticed any anti-Nintendo bias creep in so far. The Wii U is struggling and some of us want to keep up on how it’s doing.

You cannot really say that as the software wasn’t up to scratch. You’re purely basing that on the sales as of now.
If it doesn’t work out all that well they’ll just start working on a new console. It doesn’t mean they’re done and out There’s a lot they could’ve improved on with this console to make it on par with the PS4 and XBOX One. Like not locking the purchased downloadable content to a single Wii U, adding an achievement/trophy type system, making the friends/message system a bit more integrated. These can all be done through patches though and I wish they would do some of those things. But they desperately need to get third party support with some good games that don’t get awful reviews compared to the other two. Framerate issues seems to be the most common problem on WIi U versions of games.
No one needs to fret over whether the WIi U will do well or not. Just enjoy the games. I have a feeling the Wii U will have games that top the Gamecube in terms of legendary masterpieces like Sunshine, Melee and Luigi’s Mansion.
At least for Nintendo fans, the Wii U is the best console that Nintendo’s ever released!!! It’s too bad no one else can see it like we do.

Completely disagreed that the Wii U’s games are enjoyable, or that the console is the best one so far. The console fails to truly innovate with the gameplay, most of the consoles features (gyroscope controls, dual screens, touch screen) have been done with previous consoles and handhelds. And many of the games reflect this, especially games from Nintendo’s most iconic franchises. Look at games like NSMBU, 3D World, Tropical Freeze, and Mario Kart 8. What do these games do differently that couldn’t be done on a previous console? Not much. Now compare that to some of the titles from past generations like the N64, DS, and Wii. Do any of these games come close to what these consoles did for gaming? Not at all. I’m waiting for more games that have that “Wow” factor, to feel like they’re using the Gamepad in meaningful ways that enhances the gameplay. Or if they can’t do that, at least a game that has a new concept/setting/gameplay element that could’ve been done on a previous console, but wasn’t. But the games so far have been pretty rehashtastic, and that’s probably the major reason why there isn’t much excitement for the Wii U.
It’s almost like some of you have not realised that the AAA titles are out yet until next year (other than SM3DW) and you’re acting as if it’s all over.
Lemme tell ya it’s far from over. Nintendo don’t compete because they don’t need to and they range their products for everyone.
They’ve not had any problems with their hardware (which is pretty damn good) and their software is pretty much unparalleled.
Just wait until games like TF are out and then Wii U will be coming up and up. Power in a console means nothing. Wii wasn’t quite powerful for the console it was, but the power wasn’t exactly close to PS3 or Xbox 360, but did that stop it from selling? Nope. It’s all about giving experiences that haven’t been possible before. That is why ladies and gents Wii U is different, but it will certainly make a huge dent into the 8th gen, whether you like it or not.

Its going to fail because the Wii U is going to sell so bad by its end of lifetime (assuming its not this month) but they failed to grab the hardcore, the casuals that bought a Wii didn’t by a Wii U, ps4/bone are already catching up to its LIFETIME sales and they have only been out for a few weeks, they lack must have software EVEN THO ITS BEEN OUT FOR OVER A YEAR, they fail to innovate with there ips but instead use the same rehash formula. They DONT bother reviving old ips like star fox, f zero, earthbound (stuff that would bring in the hardcore) AND they only cater to the kiddies so how are you suppose to bring up sales with all the stupidity ??? Not listening to fans etc. Majority of gamers DONT want or care for a Wii U and many find it a baby console so with all that an MUCH MORE the Wii U is destined to fail and like I said the same DK, Mario, Zelda crap just isn’t going to save them this time around. There are none and that’s why there was NO innovation at all with any of the Wii U games. All the games it has are either 3rd parties that the other consoles do better or rehash 1st parties that could have easily been on the original “Wii” the Wii U is basically Wii just with HD graphics that’s it. Mario kart will be the same, donkey kong will be the same and smash will be the same just In HD all those are the last Gen Wii games in HD lol

The main innovation is the gamepad as it allows things that couldn’t be done before. You are making it sound like PS4 and X1 have more innovation yet, they are using the same standard controller….WOW!
What quality ?? They always use low budget for they’re games. So far on Wii U there’s been no innovation with there big franchisees. They always reuse the same formula. For Mario its jump through levels beat bowser the end. Zelda its Zelda gets kidnapped, go through dungeons beat ganondorf the end (even albtw failed to drastically change the formula, it was a slight change and still felt linear but it was still a great game) they need to add some intense dialogue, real detailed storylines, character growth, voices etc and stop banking on the same 1990s nostalgia formula to save them, THEN maybe people will go back to Nintendo and take them serious again. We need the gamcube era Nintendo back or else its over for Wii U. And lastly the gamepad has yet to be used in a way that screams OMG I NEED THIS TO PLAY THE GAME so innovation my ass I’d rather use the pro controller over the gamepad any day simply because it’s unnecessary in all the Wii games and not needed

That doesn’t really answer my question, “allowing things that couldn’t be done before” isn’t an example of innovation, it’s the definition of innovation. You haven’t actually explained HOW the Gamepad innovates, nor demonstrated any games that take advantage of it.
Most of the games we’ve been getting for the last 3 years or so have been fairly rehashy, recycling the gameplay, the setting, level gimmicks, and things like that. You’d be hard pressed to find a game that actually brings something new to the table. The lack of interesting usage for the Gamepad reinforces this notion, they’re not using it to create new experiences, they’re just recycling old ones and trying to pass them off as new. you thought is right, there’s no game for Wii U that really sticks out and says “This is a really neat idea that you couldn’t have done before, buy a Wii U so you can play it”. Those are the kind of games that will save the Wii U, but instead Nintendo seems unwilling to step outside their comfort zone to make them, which is sad. And that’s why the Wii U is failing.
They always choke when you ask them questions like that. I dont think they can even comprehend and when they give an answer its irrelevant crap that doesn’t even portray to the question you asked. But yea exactly what im saying, Nintendo just banks on rehash nostalgia to sell there games and they dont actually try new things and change up the formula.
