Square Enix Says It Has No Plans To Abandon Core Gamers, Despite Mobile Shift

Square Enix’s America and Europe CEO Phil Rogers has explained to MCV that the company has no plans to abandon core gamers, despite the company’s recent shift to mobile platforms. Rogers told the publication that they are aware of gamers suspicions regarding free-to-play titles, but claims it’s only one of their business models.

“Today people might be suspicious of free-to-play – some people fear this is a tag for low quality although many see free to play games pushing boundaries in terms of quality and fun. We understand that generally a lot of core gamers don’t like the idea of free-to-play if it’s really seen as a way to charge them more than they want for something. That’s not the intention nor is it a strategy that will last and take any business forward.

“But free-to-play is one business model, not the only business model. And while we’re making games for a variety of audiences, we still have a lot of focus for those day one gamers that have such amazing passion, and which – frankly – this business has been built on. We have no plans to abandon them, and we value their responses – even if sometimes that can be emotion and hard to read.”

  1. Good for them for actually doing what is right.

But lets all be honest, mobile gaming isn’t really gaming. If you want to play a proper game, then you would either game a games console or a PC wouldn’t you.

Yes there are games on mobile devices, but they’re more pick up and play titles with no story line. I play mobile games, but i prefer proper gaming overall. I think I speak for most gamers.

    1. not really, most consoles games look a lot less like games with all the cutscenes, handholding and linearity than mobile games

Angry Birds, Cut the Rope or Ridiculous Fishing have more in common with Space Invaders, Asteroids and Pac-Man than Call of Duty or Battlefield

    1. FF13, FF13-2, FF13-3, Hitman, Tomb Raider…and whatever crap time forgot on consoles and mobile, yes, there are very good reason to doubt Square Enix.

FF15 and KH3 could turn out to be shit, or just “SQUARE, SQUARE, SQUARE, SQUARE, SQUARE” like all KH games have played like, nobody really likes FFX, let alone FFX-2, it’s just a decent JRPG in a sea of shit, and Bravely Default is about the only good game SE have released in 2 years, not to mention highest rated they’ve released in a LONG time, and genuinely highly rated, not Tomb Raider people will buy it so give it high score high rating, but knowing Square Enix, Bravely Second will probably never get released out of Japan, unless Nintendo step in AGAIN.

      1. Lol! Shut up, homo. Bravely Default is pretty great. But Square Enix has released several other great games in the last two years, Sleeping Dogs, Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution. If you disagree with me, you;re a moron. You’re the clown who likes Griller Instinct and Gimpza 5.

        1. Okay, i forgot about Sleeping Dogs which was great, but Tomb Raider was only decent, but it was pretty boring, and as soon as you beat it, that was it, there was no replay value and it’s only 8 hours long.
And Hitman Absolution was fucking terrible, the games attempt at “stealth” and “options” were embarressing, and riddled with problem along with the most flawed disguise system ever.

        2. I’m playing the new Tomb Raider and I’m absolutely loving it.
Though I’d say opinion would be a lot on whether the games are “great” or not. After all, I played Half Life (widely praised) and I didn’t like it.

      2. Thief, Drakengard 3, TheathRhythm 2 (the Handheld version,) KH HD remix 2.5, Heroes and Generals, and Dragon Quest X. Again, SE isnt forgetting the hardcore gamer. Yes the FFX3 games werent that good, but Tomb Raider and Hitman were great games.

KH3 and FF15 could turn to shit, but thats just it, we havent seen enough to say with confidence that the games will be shit, its ok if you dont like the Games coming from SE but to say that we should be worry about them abandoning the Core gamers is a bit silly. Dont be so cynical, some of us still like their games.

And yes theatrhythm is actually fun.

          1. Nah, TheDragon24 right. Sleeping Dogs was a good game. TR was not all it was cracked up to be. Hitman also was a let down as well. They were good games, but not on par for what SE is known for. I’ll be honest. I liked it better when Square and Enix were not one huge company. They did better as competitors. *runs for cover*

        1. Those first 3 haven’t been released yet, so how do you know?

Square Enix are terrible, they’re not the worse, but they still suck.

And sure, “being cynical”, some people like their stuff, but dome people though Aliens Colonial Marines was a good game, good enough to keep it in top 10 best selling lists for a while, so frankly, your opinion doesn’t mean much.

          1. I never said they were out, the post is about SE reassuring core gamers that they havent been forgotten or will be. All I did was mention games that arecurrently out or being developed/published by SE. Its blatantly obvious that they are still catering to the core gamer.

Of course my opinion is only a personal preference, but you keep typing as everything you say is solid facts, you dont like Hitman? Great, but its only your opinion because like I said, some of us actually liked it. Hell Tomb Raider has been nominated for GOTY so im not alone when I say that the game is actually pretty good or even great. Different strokes for different folks I guess, but at the end of the day opinions still arent facts.

  2. Now lets just hope that they don’t say that they won’t support Wii U because I quite like Square – pretty good game studio.

    1. Square Enix is all about profit, just as EA. Care about gamers? – YEAH RIGHT!!! As long as they fill their pockets that is, and what else would you expect anyway so don’t come here with that bullshit.

They treat gamers as fools because they are…

      1. …until that other thing which they F.E.A.R!!!

Greedy studios are like a ship with a hole in the bottom, and the gamers role is to point the ship in the right direction ;) “kinda quote”

  3. its sounds more like he is addressing free to play games not just mobile games in general as not all mobile games are free to play i could care less because i dont play mobile touch screen games anyways because i like to have a d-pad and buttons

  4. Bravely Default and Deus Ex HM

The issue isn’t that we’re worried that you’re “abandoning” core games…it’s that you haven’t fucking make any good ones, besides those 2, for the past however many years it’s been!

      1. Why?
It’s only merit is that it showed how massively overrated Uncharted is, because at least Tomb Raider had some variety in it’s gameplay, and actual level design but it’s nothing special, all the puzzles are easy as shit or gone, so it’s just a decent shooter with some stuff ripped from the Batman Arkham games to throw in variety, most of which isn’t interesting.

      1. Why? Because i actually play enough games do know when one is ACTUALLY good and isn’t just “man, this game is great compared to the other shit i was buying”?

And im soooo sorry i haven’t gotten a gravatar, when i don’t even care enough to even bother getting one

  5. S-E is slowly being overshadowed by other up & coming RPG makers, like monolith soft.
It’d take a seriously surprising and high quality title to get them back on track.
Maybe they should talk with nintendo regarding a sequel to Super Mario RPG.
That or properly revive the Mana series.

    1. “Maybe they should talk with nintendo regarding a sequel to Super Mario RPG.”

Because two Mario RPG franchises isn’t enough.

    2. You do realize Monolith Soft has been around for close to 15 years right, they arent exactly “up and comers” and they are indeed structured by some of the guys that left Square back in 1999.

  6. With Bravely Default, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy X / X-2 HD Remaster, Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III and the recent release of Tomb Raider last year with the next-gen version coming out soon I can see they are telling the truth the majority of them are Final Fantasy games though I like Final Fantasy games so I don’t mind at all.
All the games I listed (apart from Tomb Raider ’cause I already own it) I am planning to get as well.
