Mario Maker Will Include More Art Styles Than Just Mario Games

US Gamer recently had the chance to speak to Mario Maker producer Takashi Tezuka about the new and creative title. Tezuka explained that the game will contain more art styles than Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros U and he’s even hoping to include other graphics that aren’t from the Mario series. Here’s what he had to say during this week’s E3 event in Los Angeles.

“Obviously, there will be other graphical styles included,” Tezuka said. “And nothing’s been decided yet, but I’d also like to include other graphics that aren’t Mario.” Would that mean that if Legend of Zelda graphics were included, the game would let you design top-down stages, I asked?

“No, it won’t be top-down,” he said. “It’s always going to be a 2D platformer.” However, players can expect more level design elements than those included on the show floor. Tezuka said he plans to integrate more enemy and object types than what appeared in the E3 demo, though he doesn’t want the palette of options to become overwhelming.

“Tezuka also emphasized the inspiration Mario Maker draws from Mario Paint and says that he hopes to include features similar to those of that Super NES classic, including a music composition feature. As for Internet sharing and Miiverse integration, Tezuka admits those details are still being worked out as well, but that he’s mindful of players’ desire to show off their level designs to friends.”

  1. Ah, so there are going to more than just the NES style? Now that sounds kind of interesting. I wasn’t interested before but now it’s got my attention.

this game should’ve been a part of mario bros u, and when i said that someone here was like “that’s a terrible idea” BUT NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, everybody’s like “best game ever, nintendo is so innovative”
      stupid motherfuckers

You always have something that is very little to complain about and you try to turn it into a big deal. What are you going to complain next about? That the ocean is getting saltier?
Just calm down and breath in, then breath out.
It helps, because constant anger is not good for your health.

That’s even worse, he needs to go to yoga class to further ensure a longer life of less anger.

    2. Right! Like the snes game, and Mario 2 & 3.
Metroid and ice climbers would also be nice additions.
Also in maybe game 2 they should do a trials version of Mario 64

What does this mean?! Zelda styles? Sonic styles? Metroid Styles?

I can see them doing all of that. Maybe even change it so you can be different characters aside from Mario?

    1. Nintendo is my Blood

I believe it’s more along the lines of Mario art styles
since they already have the 8-bit mario and 2.5D Mario, most likely they will have Paper Mario as well

      1. If Paper Mario is in this, I would buy this game day-one hour-one minute-one (or minute-two, depending on how long it takes the eShop to load).

But the article clearly states “MARIO MAKER WILL INCLUDE MORE ART STYLES THAN JUST ”’MARIO”’ GAMES.”

That sounds to me like they are branching out to games other than Mario.

    2. If Paper Mario is in this, I would buy this game day-one hour-one minute-one (or minute-two, depending on how long it takes the eShop to load).

  3. Internet sharing and Miiverse integration, Tezuka admits those details are still being worked out as well, but that he’s mindful of players’ desire to show off their level designs to friends –

He’s mindful?! This SHOULD BE the foundation of the game… wtf

Agreed. An upload of our level to Miiverse would also provide other Miiverse people with a direct link to our stage that they can click on which sends them from Miiverse & back to the game that downloads that person’s creation.

Super Mario World? Hell yeah! It’d be fun to put together some levels that put the Special stages like Tubular & Gnarly to shame!

  4. I like it!

I was a tad disappointed there were only two looks. I love the Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros styles, but I thought that – in order to give the game a more distinctive flavor – Nintendo should have created at least one art style that is exclusive to Mario Maker.

Maybe they will get to it eventually.

  6. If they include; Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario Land 1 & 2, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64 and maybe Galaxy, then I’m in. It would be epic to have all the bosses from all those games in one long epic marathon challenge mode. :D

  7. We’re all about to see how easy it was for Nintendo to soak us out of $$$ by making NSMB rehash, now we can make our own.

I said this on Miiverse. But this is the last 2D Mario Brothers I am ever going to buy. They will never again charge me retail for a slightly different version of the same damn game.

    1. pink0crystal0midbus

I’m thinking this is the last 2D Mario game we will ever get from Nintendo. At least, in this style of gameplay. They’ll still do Paper Marios I’m sure and 2D Mario games with different mechanics, but this is the absolute last NSMB inspired 2D Mario game that we will ever see from Nintendo…ever.

That’s pretty weird. I’m expecting Nintendo to really grasp onto 3D environment video games with Mario in particular.

Makes me wonder about the future of Donkey Kong. Perhaps we will see a new 3D Donkey Kong game akin to DK 64 make it’s way onto the Wii U before it’s life cycle ends?

      1. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

That would be… very bad. Super Mario & Donkey Kong Country tend to be great side scrolling platform games from Nintendo when they space them out over long periods of time. I’d really hate to see Nintendo stop making these altogether. Less of them would be nice, though, just not a complete abandonment of them.

        1. pink0crystal0midbus

With Mario Maker, there is no point in making anew Mario 2D side scroller. The same could happen with DKCR if they decide to do a similar thing or make a DKCR skin for the Mario Maker game.

      2. I think they were doing ok with the release of Mario games for a LONG time, but that cashgrab NSMB strategy has really placed a barrier between me and Mario.
Half my fault for buying them, Half Nintendo’s fault for wading tiny little changes to make me believe they may be unique enough to buy.
        DS
        3DS
        Wii
        WiiU
        Luigi version
over $200 and in hind-sight I feel financially violated by that sly plumber. I skipped the well received 3D World because of my grudge against that Money-grabbing Mario!!
OH, and when you get 1 million coins in the 3DS version? You don’t even get a phone call the next day. Just a “thanks for your money! See you soon!” slam bam thank you ma’am.

  8. This should be a really fun game, but ONLY if it has 4 player co-op like in NSMB. That way you can fight your friends on your custom levels. At least give us the option of posting the levels online to see how many people can complete it. This game has a lot of potential, but I feel like it’s going to backfire and underwhelm me

      1. I just think that the replay value wouldn’t last for long. Mega Man Powered Up had a similar mode, but it loses the enjoyment after a while because you’re basically just playing against your stage designing self. It would be much more fun if you could compete with a friend and try to make the toughest stage that is still beatable. For example; I would make the toughest stage possible that I am still able to complete and then I would post it online to see if anyone else could top it. I could also just upload one that I find really fun and then I would look for stages that others played. As a single player experience; I would likely get bored after the first few days

  9. Tallon Ridley XIII: Kalas

The biggest thing that keeps me from getting these type of video games is the fact they can get pretty overwhelming with a plethora of customizations. So I can see why he wants to keep from adding TOO much customization into the game.

  10. Online sharing of courses is an absolute must for it to be worthwhile. The ability to create an underwater, underground, and castle levels would be nice as well. If you could string your levels into a game and share that, then this could be simply phenomenal.

  12. All these comments… about “they need to include this and that”.
Why? If they would include a tile editor you could MAKE those graphics.
Or do none of you have any artistic talent?

Well, if they include the tools, i will make sure i provide what people want that might be lacking. But i just feel that, rather than include all these styles.. include the tools to make them. I mean this does seem to be shaping up to be a sequel to Mario Paint..

They can include that tile editing feature that MP had.. or a better one, that would help for sure.
I’m not so much interested in styles they could include, so much as tools to make my ideas hop out.
I hope that in a later Nintendo Direct that they talk about it more.

With the success of games like LBP, this is a great idea.. Nintendo needs it’s own game creation like tool.
