With Fire Emblem: Fates scheduled to be released tomorrow in the United States, USGamer has conducted an interview with the developers behind the game to find out a range of things including their future plans, writer influence and their favourite wifes in the highly anticipated game. You can read the extensive interview, right here.
- Intelligent Systems is approximately 150 people.
- Fire Emblem Fates took around the same number of staff as normal despite making multiple titles due to how they set up development. Unfortunately they don’t mention how many of their 150 staff were on the game.
- They really value broadening the audience for Fire Emblem games, and that ambition seems to go beyond the number of people Awakening reached.
- Toward this end, Shin Kibayashi – the manga writer they hired – suggested that they make the story “simple and easy to understand” so that it would be accessible to a large audience. He also helped influence a lot of how the four main characters in each of the two main games would be. They also did a lot of writing internally. Not mentioned here, but the DLC episode was written with help by the writer of Senran Kagura.
- When talking about broadening the audience, they say they want to hang on to the most popular features, but also make sure to keep adding in lots of new things to keep the series fresh. They also feel it’s important to keep exploring the diverging interests of their fanbase, so I get the sense they will keep making split releases going forward, especially given it took them a similar amount of staff to Awakening anyway.
- Producer Masahiro Higuchi’s favorite romance option was your maid, Felicia.
- Game Director Kouhei Maeda’s favorite romance option was your Nohrian adoptive older sister, Camilla.
“Well, there are quite a fair amount of characters that you can build your relationship with, and I do have many characters that I like,” Higuchi says, “but I feel like through my gameplay, I feel like Felicia was the one that I had the support conversation go up to max the most. Since Felicia is always around in the story, it sort of felt natural to build the relationship with her.”
Maeda, by contrast, prefers Nohr’s Camilla, who is a bit more of a vixen. “I just really wanted to be with a unique type of character, and that was sort of the natural choice that I had.”

Camilla for best wife 2016
Didn’t expect to find out that the writer for Senran kagura helped with the (probably Beach) DLC.
They need a date for the UK release 😭
May 2020 and you’ll be thankful Nintendo was that generous. Seriously though I git conquest a day early and it’s pretty darn good. But picking Nohr is a difficult route like literally the game is brutal and I’m on normal difficultly lol.
Well folks, Fire Emblem Amie is here to stay….
censored in the future Western versions of Fire Emblem.
~*Ugh… Why does NoA have to be ran by puritanical morons!?*~
I think you mean memers.
Why do we have to get romantic in video games? So stupid. I liked Fire Emblem until they started doing this.
They needed to add all the generic weeb trash in it so it would sell or it would have been canned. So it’s this or nothing.
Listen you two, one day you’ll be an adult and will understand the fun in the relationship thing. Sorry you’re being forced into it early.
Oh I understand pretending to be married to fictional anime characters.
Good. Because everyone should understand the long term, social value of being able to pretend to marry fictional, anime characters.
-||Understand that it’s nothing like in gaming||-
Yeah. Most times it’s more hell than fun. IRL
I’m just saying nobody’s going to get cooties and there are historical benefits to building relationships and genetics when it comes to life including warefare. Look at the Spartans. Half the reason they were unstoppable was because of their relationahips. I’m sure there are hetrosexual examples as well.
I mean, it doesn’t matter. But fire emblem is just as much about telling stories and building characters and relationships.
Xenoblade does something very similar, noone complained about that.
Well… Given some of the crazy people I’ve dated, I will say gaming is much more mild! Unless FE has close allies go bat-shit crazy, it really isn’t much like real life! XD
-||What did these crazy humans do?||-
Let’s just say I keep a low profile (for now) to help prevent stalkers. I plan on lifting my “off the grid” status when I launch my YouTube channel later this year. :]
-||What is your theme going to be about?||-
~It’s going to be about telling motherfuckers to go fuck themselves & their opinion if they don’t like my own opinion. Oh wait. You were talking to Jaded. My bad…*~
-||Maybe you should do a channel where you do just that, kind of similar to this human, just change the word gay to the thing you would want to “talk” about||-
https://youtu.be/jNjuB_lwgQE
-||Start at 0:46, stupid youtube||-
~*I want to say Youtube became shit after Google bought them, but they were going down that toilet drain long before Google. Oh & awesome video. That was funny as hell. In place of gay, it’ll be pissed. “Let them be pissed, motherfucker, let them be pissed.” The best part was when George Takei came along & threatened everyone. lol*~
-||Well I’ve never been involved with Youtube entirely so I don’t really understand what is wrong with youtube now compared to before||-
~*The only things different are there is more ads, both intrusive & non-intrusive, there are more videos getting removed for one reason or another, & fair use has taken a plummet. Other than that, nothing much else has changed. Youtube has just went from being about YOU to being about corporations & getting run over by the big guys.*~
-||I see, that is typical human and just another thing to ruin things for the more innocent ones||-
-||This is how water works by the way||-
-||Subject: The Nami thinks I’m a [Homophobe], what does it mean?||-
*wink*
~*I wanted to say that but I couldn’t think of a way to word it. So thanks for saying what I couldn’t.*~
Well, there always were some kind of semi-romantic stuff to the series, (For example the slightly changed character endings in the GBA games, or even love/children being in one of the first game of the series), it just got more present in the last few games.
I don’t really feel like it takes that much space in the game though (Unless there’s a mechanic I haven’t heard of, if so please don’t spoil), so you could still keep your supports to Rank A and not lose too much.
~*Because romance is a natural part of life & any story that doesn’t have it in some capacity is crap. Don’t worry. When you grow up & stop viewing romance as some kind of disease that you might catch, you’ll have more appreciation for it. Joking aside, as another said, romance was always a thing in Fire Emblem. It was only a matter of time before it became what it is today in Fire Emblem.*~
Sorry but clearly the way FE was before was doing it no good. It nearly killed the franchise. Personally I like it so go cry elsewhere.
“…They also feel it’s important to keep exploring the diverging interests of their fanbase, so I get the sense they will keep making split releases going forward, especially given it took them a similar amount of staff to Awakening anyway.”
This along with no Western version that includes the already released DLC, I can’t truly buy the full game in one transaction.
This will keep me away from the series.
It’s 3 separate games…..not 1 game cut up in 3 pieces.
I don’t see it that way as it’s just different story lines set in the same exact environments. Cut scenes don’t do it for me for classifying as different.
It does suck that you can’t get it all on one cart or one download.
I’m not intentionally playing devil’s advocate, but I do see both your points. Each story has it’s own plot, but they are intertwined, and I read somewhere to play Revelations last as it ties it all together and contains spoilers /insights you don’t get playing Conquest and Birthright individually. So… \(o.o)/
I just want advance wars.
A sequal would kick ass!! Days of Ruin was amazing.
Unfortunately, InteleSys would rather milk the shit out of Fire Emblem instead and leave the series in the bunker next to Paper Mario.
Hey! I still want some milk from the FE cow!! ;D
I wouldn’t mind if they took a break to evolve Advanced Wars now that FE.F. Has released.
Yokoi is twisting in his grave.
~*”I get the sense they will keep making split releases going forward” NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Yep. Fire Emblem should have died with Awakening as the last entry. :/ I pity anyone that thinks Fire Emblem should have ended before the romance stuff, though. The fact that bothers some people more about Fates than the split release is just… sad.*~
I have a problem. I’m addicted to Fire Emblem. I’ll take it however they give it to me. :)
So is Felicia like the Sumia of Amakening in which I mean that she is kind of forced to be your wife?
That’s more Azura’s role.
~*looks up pictures of Felicia after remembering that she’s a maid* I’m a sucker for the anime maid archetype. She might have actually been my first choice as wife if her voice & personality is as beautiful as her appearance.*~
So they had the same number of staff despite the multiple versions? Interesting.
It’ll be interesting if they really do keep the split versions then, though I hope they might execute it better in the future.
Guys and their waifus…….. What about the husbands!?!
Are you a woman? Not trying to pry, but by your comment, it just seemed like you are. Or am I mistaken? Not too many women on this site as far as I know. Namie, Michelle, a few others, and some of the writers. The more the merrier. Course if I am mistaken and you’re a guy, then this is even more awkward then it already is. Curiosity killed the cat as they say.
“I am a deity of the cosmos. I have no gender.”
… You’re starting to act like Commander now haha.
You get a a plus!! I was making a reference to a comment they made a long time ago!!
Yes! ODIN is my sexy piece of man meat! I can’t wait to marry him! I was first like Kaze or Silas and then when I saw Odin it was game over. I still don’t know their personalities though.
Ok; so Masahiro has a maid fetish (noice) and Kouhei loves big racks.
That’s what I gathered from this.

That headline instantly makes people think about how games blur the line between fantasy, attachment and real emotions, and on forums it often sparks funny debates about favourite characters, virtual romance and what players look for in relationships. These conversations usually drift toward love, dating and how storytelling influences our expectations of partners and chemistry.
