Amazons Pre-Order Frenzy

Anticipation for the Wii in the wake of the Nintendo press conference has reached fever pitch, so much so that online retailer Amazon.com has had to stop taking pre-orders due to an overwhelming demand.

The Wii was made available for consumers to pre-order Friday September 15th and subsequently reached Amazons initial allocation limit within a couple of hours.

It’s currently unknown how many units were pre-ordered by consumers in total, but an online retailer the size of Amazon must have received an unprecedented amount of interest from customers to sell out of its initial batch of pre-orders.

  1. Its possible Amazon are erring on the side of caution and lowering their estimate for pre-orders.
They made an absolute shambles of the xbox 360 launch and over-egged their pre-orders to the amount of units they were getting. They got bad press for it and there is no way they would want that to happen again.

  2. Indeed it’s unlikely they have been given there final launch allocations so soon, so in all likely hood it’s currently a case of them being overly cautious.

  3. No sign of such frenzies here in the UK though. *sigh* Still, to be safe I’m off to my local GAME and putting my lengthy pre-order of the Wii and various games. And I’m hardly surprised, the launch line up is awesome and the Wii has had so much press recently, I guess that it was inevitable that such a run on pre-orders was to occur.

  4. At work today we had quite a few people inquire about pre-ordering the Wii.
We are technically taking pre-orders for the Wii console, but not deposits at this precise minute. Though I have to state that I’m unclear what the companys plans are for the pre-order scheme at this current moment in time.

  5. To be honest I couldn’t ask for a better part time job. It accomodates my university course just perfectly, and of course working in a video games environment is just great.
