It seems Nintendo Wii pre-orders were in ridiculously high demand on Friday as reports surfacing from the net suggest that the console sold out in both GameStop and EB Games, two of the biggest games retailers in the United States.
It appears that even journalists of respected tech and gaming websites were caught off guard by the surge of demand for Wii pre-orders with a writer for Ars Technica unable to pre-order himself a system, anywhere.
To help put the situation in perspective the guy’s over at the infamous gaming blog Joystiq are reporting that many eager customers anxious to get their hands on a pre-order slip for the Wii lined up hours before stores even opened.
The actual amount of units available to consumers varies from an estimated thirty consoles to a dozen. Through out this ordeal one thing is apparent and that is the complete lack of pre-orders available for the machine, something many weren’t quite prepared for.
This is pretty dramatic, when Wii preorders came in in England, ther was no queue at all, I simply walked in and put down my £20. America on the other hand… wow.
I know it’s like the total opposite here. I was chatting with my manager earlier today about the current situation in the States and it appears that we’ve barely fulfilled our Wii pre-orders. We’ve been taking deposits for roughly around two weeks now and we’re one, if not the biggest gaming retailer in the UK. It’s crazy.
I’m one of the crazy fools that lined up here in America. Been waiting for news of pre-orders and finally got word about then. Stood in line for 1 1/2 hrs to get one of the 8 preorders availible at the GameStop I was at. They turned away at least 6 people before the store opened and another 10 once it finally did.
