Nintendo Wii U: Nintendo Doesn’t Want A Repeat Of The Nintendo 3DS Launch For Wii U

Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime has told Reuters that the company doesn’t want a repeat of the Nintendo 3DS launch fiasco when it launches the Wii U sometime after April 2012.

“The initial price on the 3DS was also too high, something that Nintendo will be careful about this time around.”

“We had to go back and reduce the price of 3DS and we certainly don’t want to go through that when we launch Wii U.”

    1. the price is around 300$. we can say the wiiu tech alone its like 250$ but there is no 250 GB hard drive like the 360 or the PS3, and no DVD player so that’s maybe around 80$-90$ less, but the controller am sure its expensive so make it 100$ per wiiu controller so we have a total of 260-270$ aprox. plus the earn margin that could be 50$ per console.
      total price: 300$-320$

      1. if its flash based memory that can cut the price significantly.. and also everything that they are putting into this thing can either be found for relatively cheap or they already know how to mass produce in a product. for example the circle pad the touch screen and the gyroscope have all been used in previous nintendo products. so im pretty sure they’ll be able to comfortably keep the price at around $300 without losing any money.

        1. They can make these things for dollars, then they sell them to retailers for less than what the retailers sell for so truly they make could make these 100$ without losing profit

    2. Im not allowed to buy the wii u if it costs too mutch.
Im allowed if it costs about 1000 kr thats about 200 dollars.

      1. Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.
My guess is that it’s gonna be around 2500-3000 kr (420-500 dollars)
It may seem like a lot for you US fags, but it’s like this because electronics are generally pretty expensive in the nordic countries. (The Wii cost a bit more than 2000 kr (340 USD) when it first launched here)
Be you sweede, dane or norwegian, this should be pretty close considering the value of nok, svk and dnk aren’t THAT different.

        1. Scandinavia’s electronics are so expensive compared to some other country’s. People in the US gets it much cheaper and still complains.

              1. because a lot of my fellow americans are douchebags, but not all, probably not even most. so everyone judges us for what the idiots say.

            1. Everyone automatically hates the superpower in the world. When the British were basically in control a couple hundred years ago, everyone hated them too…

              1. That’s because people in “superpower”- countries are arrogant and really think they’re best of all.

    1. I won’t, we have NTSC and PAL systems here, so you wouldn’t know which to buy,
PAL costs more money but is more “abundant”
NTSC costs less but games come out later and most people have NTSC

    1. nah it gonna be $250 Nintendo is gonna pull a Vita price surprise on us. If they put $250 it will sell more at launch.

    1. …………..wut

What similarities do you see…? The color? The name? Okay, but…
how about A tablet controller with a screen?
      Or HD graphics?
Or an online service thats actually………good?

  1. I can’t thank Nintendo enough for supporting us who bought the 3DS at launch, but I agree, they need to be more consumer friendly with the Wii U. I appreciate their innovation but the tablet controller seems awkward (I never had a chance to try it yet) and it’s going to take a nice price and a damn good game to get me to buy one. Here’s a tip, Nintendo, I have a very bad weakness for Mario Kart.

    1. I have a very bad weakness to anything Nintendo. :P I haven’t been disappointed yet. I love my 3DS, I love my Wii, and I’m sure I’ll love my Wii U.

      1. i completely agree, 360 may have a few great games, but it doesnt compare to nintendo systems in my opinion. i dont have the 3ds yet.and i cant wait for wii u, i love my wii, gamecube, ds, gameboys, etc etc.

  2. There are still some great games waiting me for the Wii and the 3ds is getting stronger by the day so I wont rush for the Wii u. I’m sure Nintendo learns from the mistakes and is brave and sincere enough to admit to them.

  3. I think nintendo should shoot for $250 for the lunch price with a tablet. I feel that would be a fair price. Although at $300 I might do well if the lunch games are there.

          1. I’m gonna wait to see the launch games. If they’re good then oh yeah! I’ll pay

    1. That’s quite illegal in most countries… And also, you should sell him instead of trade him, you’ll get more money therefore more games and therefore more fun! *just kidding selling your first born son (for selling any child at that matter) is a serious offense and should not be tried at home (heh heh heh)

    1. Its not launching in April. It’s launching AFTER April 1st 2011, which is the current information we have until further notice. They are supposed to have the final model at E3 next year.

      1. I never thought it would hit before E3, especially with the poor introduction of it last year, I also don’t think it will go as:

        At E3 2012: Here’s the final Wii U version
Next day: Wii U is now for sale!

I’m guessing late Aug- mid-Nov launch frame. Specially thinking mid-October to be precise.

        1. Gamecube: November 18th, 2001
          Wii: November 19th, 2006
          Wii U: November 20th, 2012
I know this most likely isn’t true (as of now) but seeing that they are revealing the final build of the Wii U at E3 2012, I’m going to assume that it’s going to be out in fall of 2012.

          1. Doubt it, that’s a Tuesday… (yeah I had to look it up). Nintendo releases things on Sundays (at least for the USA).

  4. Wasn’t it the terrible launch games that caused the 3DS launch to be a failure? The system price wasn’t really a problem in my opinion…

    1. Totally agree. There was a hype with the 3DS that could justify the price. It’s just that there were no games to be played with….

        1. The price wasn’t a bad thing at all especially if you traded in your dsi or ds (got my 3ds on May). All I had to play was the built in software, (I loved the AR games… for 1 month) the 3ds camera, the eShop nor the browser was working, I got 3d excite bikes (not exciting at all, though the 3d was amazing), and freaking Nintendogs (30,000 trainer points just because of the lack of games!).

    2. More like lack of launch games. Even now, there aren’t many games worth playing outside of First party titles. Even most of the good games are still ports / remakes of games from other consoles. I am optimistic that it will be better by this time next year.

Also, a handheld with a short battery life and a firmware that was missing features promised at launch (some of which we still don’t have), didn’t help either. Not to mention the whole “3D is a crappy fad that I wish would die” crowd.

  5. Off topic but mario kart 7 starter kits $24.99 at toys r us check out my gravatar also until 3 if you buy super mario land you can get another 3ds game 50% off of equal or less value no skylanders.

  6. Nintendo needs some wiiu exclusives all the wiiu got is games thats coming out on the xbox 360 and ps3 and them games are going to be out for xbox 360 and ps3 before wiiu comes out like batman that game is out now and its coming to wiiu

        1. I actually agree with this here noname! All updates I’ve seen mentioning the WiiU’s games showed sequels to games that already have been in the PS3 and XBox! Nintendo needs to start mentioning some 1st party games for the WiiU. Oh yeah Peteriuss, noname is not being a troll this time; he’s mentioning a legitimate fact/opinion.

      1. Nope, I agree with noname. He’s right, if there’s anything the wii u needs, it’s exclusives. Peter, you’re the troll. You post every single time he does.

    1. Yeah, they need some exclusives. I don’t think we can hope for bigger Nintendo franchises at launch except for a Mario game, though.

  7. Price affects more than just initial sales. I would rather see a repeat of the 3DS’ performance, where it sold well, but people underestimated how much it was selling. The early adopters get perks that outweigh the initial cost of the system, while the late adopters get a discount, but no freebies. The savvy will be able to take advantage of the overlap (a.k.a. the people who early-adopted the price-lowered 3DS before the ambassador program closed).

Currently, the 3DS is outselling any other hardware.

The Wii U could do the exact same thing, and Nintendo wouldn’t even have to be apologetic about it. The hardcore gamers wouldn’t mind paying full price for a launch system even if it has its flaws (that’s what warranties are for, and Nintendo is exceptionally good at honouring them), while the more patient people (or those with backlogs) can wait for the price drop or freebies to be announced.

    1. But the object is to sell as many as possible as quickly as possible. You don’t create a new product and hope only some people buy it, and more will later. A smart business would try to sell as many as possible, including launch and post-launch.

Currently the 3DS is costing Nintendo per system sold, so they need people to buy software. The Wii made money on each system sold, and it was basically unavailable in stores for a full year or 2 after launch. Nintendo would rather have the latter and not the former.

      1. let me put it this way what do you prefer? 20 free games downloadable for your handheld for you to play whenever you want and wherever you are or just get them for the PC which you cant take anywhere

        1. you can get an r4 for your 3ds that plays the roms on it and get all of those games for free. not saying that i recommend it but it is simple

          1. I would bet anything the next update(which was supposed to be today) will zap r4 use on the 3ds. Nintendo ain’t fuckin around with piracy.

            1. I heard that they already are not supported (googled months prior). That was either fixed with the e-shop update, or it was there when the 3DS was released.

  8. It wasn’t just the price what held the 3DS back, they need a couple of strong exclusives for it to sell, I hope they realize that and deliver something amazing at launch

  9. Considering the price of the Wii, plus the new tech in the Wii U, plus inflation (which I haven’t actually calculated, I just am throwing out a number) I’d be willing to pay MAX $500 before taxes. Now, I will still most likely buy it even if it’s a bit more… but I have been a Nintendo fan since the beginning, and they are usually incredibly good with the prices (except for the main release of the 3DS), and if you remember, when the 3DS launch failed, the press released showed that the execs were taking a pay hit to cover the difference. I have a hell of a lot of respect for Nintendo, and how the company is run, that I think it will be reasonably priced, and will probably be getting this system as long as it’s not something like $1000 lol

  10. i’ll probably wait till they do price cuts like they did with the wii and the 3ds

either way, i’m getting that bad boy

  11. I am looking forward to the Wii U. I am glad Nintendo is going to take it seriously. I got my 3DS at launch. I did not regret it, but I do agree that it could have been better. Hope the Wii U goes well. :D

  12. Well looks like I got that news from ninendo I wanted. Well meh. Seriously though why is all Wii U “news” lately a repeat of things that have been said before? If Nintendo doesn’t want a repeat of 3DS they really need to start announcing things because right now there doesn’t seem to be much going on for its launch. Aw well I guess they’ve still got around a year left to start announcing things.

    1. E3 buddy, I think we will be getting a fair amount of games announced during E3 or the beginning of next year. Nintendo isn’t announcing anything til next year so we have no idea what it has to offer game wise except 3rd party titles and pikmin 3…can’t wait for Pikmin 3!!!

  13. Uh, duh. Who would want their next big project to flop face first in the dirt in the first week because they didn’t think far enough into the future (or at least beyond the first day of sales) to keep content coming?

  14. They should shut up already. This is basically the same thing they’ve been saying all this time. If they want to talk Wii U and convince us that they’re doing the right thing, then they should show us that with games. If they’re not ready to talk about the games, then they should just zip it since talking is easy.

    1. Exactly. Telling us and not showing us is just pointless. I think batman will be more than just a dry year old port of a game.

  15. Seeing now as Nintendo is willing to take a small lost just to move hardware, I’m thinking the Wii U’s price is going to be close to the actual cost. I’m hoping for a very competitive price. If they do price it at $250 that’s a direct slap in the face to Microsoft and Sony.

  16. i say $350-400 max. if the rumored hardware specs of the wiiu are true then i think that would be a good price. if you think this too high then we should remember that the xbox 360 originally cost $399.99 and the PS3 was infamously priced at $599.99.

  17. I’ll say this, if they don’t support adding music or videos on there it’s going to suck. People who are used to PS3 and Xbox 360 would be expecting that so if Nintendo takes away support for that it might turn a lot of the hard core gamers back to there old favorites. PS3 plays a lot of different kinds of videos so I’m thinking Wii U should too. Along with mp3 and music from itunes too. third party apps should be supported. Like being able to download Windows Live Messenger or yahoo Messenger or whatever.

Whatever the price is Nintendo has to show people they have options. Not just slim pickens like on the 3DS.

They need online stuff for sure. Nintendo eshop sucks. Too many dumb categories and not enough content on there. Lots of games on there are too old and outdated. Not enough new content.

    1. I agree, especially new 3DS content. I’m sick of seeing Nintendo DSiWare everywhere, MAKE MORE 3D GAMES FOR THE 3DS. Common sense.

  18. Although I am buying it whenever I can get the money, not a lot of people will. I love Nintendo, and if they want a better start than the 3DS, I think they need to rename the console. Too many people are going to mistake this for a Wii add-on sort of thing and it probably won’t sell as much as they expect. NINTENDO FTW!!!!! Lets go.

  19. They’ve said this a bilion times. Wii U launch better be good.

    * Don’t overprice it. $349.99 max.
    * Have a killer first party app. Third parties suck with launches (as proven with Nintendo 3DS)

  20. I’d actually wait for Wii U. I know it’s stupid, but a Wii is fine until it breaks again in 2013 (Long story, broke twice, in 2009 and 2011.). Hopefully it has good online, with something like Steam, because bad online = bad sales. The online sucked on Wii. Seriously, on SSBB, it took a long time to get a battle. As long as online is good and the price is low, then the Wii U will sell well. As long as they have a first-party game at start.

  21. I don’t think Nintendo would want to sell themselves short by coming out with a thrifty piece of hardware for $250.00. People might think its a cheap system might not buy it. If they are going to make it powerful they’d have to sell it as a high end system. Of course there would be people who would not buy it because its too much but then there would be others who would. Just look at PS3. In 2008 Christmas PS3 sold really well and they were still going for $699 a piece.
